I participated in the UK SpGmi cmpetitin held in Lndn this August. My teammates were my husband Alex and his brther Jnny. We wn by 33 pints.
We were then heading fr the Wrld Cup in Tky. The night we arrived, we walked arund the cmpetitin area, which was in the busy cmmercial Shibuya district. We thught abut the prfile f peple wh drp litter: prbably typically yunger peple r peple wh were drinking. That helped us narrw dwn where t g. S we made nte f areas with lts f bars.
With 21 natins participating, the cmpetitin f the Wrld Cup was intense. At ne pint, the members f anther team, came ver t us and tried t pick rubbish ut f ur bag. After the first half, Japan came tp, we were secnd and the Brazilian team was third. My muscles were aching and I felt cmpletely wiped ut frm the heat f Tky n a sunny day. I didn’t have much mre energy, and I remember Alex and Jnny saying the same, but we had this feeling f being n the edge f smething amazing. We had t just keep pushing. We pulled ahead in the secnd half and ended up cming first, with 57 kg f rubbish cllected.
Befre SpGmi, I wuldn’t have imagined myself as smene wh picked litter up ff the street. At the early stage f ur training, we were s bad at finding litter. Then, just after the Lndn cmpetitin, n the way hme, we saw s much. We were just much aware f it. Once yu’re drawn int SpGmi, yur attitude twards litter and hw yu cntribute cmpletely changes.

Imagine yu are n the lkut in a clthing stre fr a shirt t wear t a dinner party next week. Yu find the perfect black shirt and lk at the price tag (价签) —$29. 99. Research has fund that anchring is regulated by ne’s knwledge abut the particular target. The mre an individual knws, the mre certain he r she is, and therefre the narrwer the range f prbable values. In cntrast, the less smene knws abut the target, the wider the range f likely values as ne might nly be aware f the general categry that the target belngs t rather than the exact value itself.
Elements such as time pressure and cgnitive lad (认知负荷) can greatly influence hw well ne is able t thrughly access relevant infrmatin frm their knwledge base. C. Their knwledge base.D. Their shpping frequency.
    31. Under which circumstance is the anchring bias mst prblematic?
    A. One has a higher cgnitive lad.
    B. There is t much time t make a decisin.
    C. The anchr infrmatin is presented visually.
    D. One is highly mtivated t make the right chice.

When I began t learn Chinese, I pursued what many arund me saw as an uncnventinal strategy. Instead f painstakingly writing ut characters and practising sentence rder, I set ut t make as much f a fl f myself as pssible. I spke my mistake-ridden Chinese with friends, annyed teachers with bad jkes and punished my ears with native music and pdcasts. It wasn’t perfect, but it was enugh t interview peple and read shrt news articles in just a year.
Organizatinal psychlgist Adam Grant neatly sums up this methd alngside ther systems and qualities in his new bk. “Being a creature f discmfrt,” Grant writes, can unlck hidden ptential t d greater things than their backgrund r experience might suggest. This is essential fr mre than learning a skill r a language; this is what he says takes individuals t the pinnacle f their industry.
Grant writes that universities and cmpanies shuld take mre steps t recgnize ptential, and where an individual has vercme difficulties like grwing up in pverty. This quantifying the unquantifiable culd be dne, he suggests, by lking at the rate f change f a student’s grades as well as the final scre.
The example f Mexican-American Jse Hernandez cmes t mind. The astrnaut attained his dream f jining NASA after being rejected cuntless times by a system that did nt take int accunt his different experiences wrking as a farm laburer when he was yung and vercming struggles.
Systems, therefre, need t change t find the best peple. This is als a key message in the bk: Imprve the pipelines s that better peple cme up in the future.
