Grwing up n the Guanzhng Plain, He Jing didn’t start muntaineering until 18. Her first climb, in 2006, was in the Qinling Muntains, and it sparked a passin fr the sprt.
In 2012, feeling sad fr the lss f her grandmther, He attempted her first muntain ver 5,000 meters—Munt Siguniang in Sichuan prvince. The experience prvided her with a sense f peace and relief. “As I apprached the summit (顶峰) and saw the rsy light n the snw, I fund peace and a release frm my inner cnfusin,” she recalled.
Since then, He has been devted t climbing high-altitude peaks. She summited her first 8,000-meter peak, Munt Ch Oyu, in 2016, using just ne bttle f xygen. Realizing she culd handle the extreme altitude (海拔), she decided t attempt future climbs withut xygen, a mve partly mtivated by cst savings. Climbing withut xygen carries significant risks due t the thin atmsphere at high altitudes. T prepare, He trained strictly, running at least five times a week, climbing 200 flights f stairs with a 20-kilgram lad twice weekly, and using an xygen-restricting mask t simulate high-altitude cnditins.
“At altitudes abve 8,000 meters, the human brain experiences extreme lack f xygen, and the bdy becmes sleepy. I kept telling myself nt t fall asleep, as I might never wake up again,” she said. Her first successful summit withut bttled xygen came n Sept. 25, 2017, when she reached the tp f Munt Manaslu in Nepal.
On Oct. 9 this year, she reached the summit f the 8,027-meter Munt Shishapangma in China’s Xizang autnmus regin, becming the first persn frm China and the third wman in the wrld t scale all 14 f the wrld’s peaks ver 8,000 meters withut the use f additinal xygen.

25.Hw did He prepare herself fr climbing withut additinal xygen?
A.By running fur r five times a week.
    B.By training in high-altitude cnditins.
C.By climbing stairs with lads regularly.

We all knw that being verweight is nt great fr yur health—it’s linked t metablic (新陈代谢的) diseases like diabetes and cardivascular (心血管的) prblems. But weighing yurself wn’t tell yu all yu need t knw abut yur disease risk. A friend f mine is a super-fit marathn runner. She’s all lean muscle. And yet accrding t her bdy mass index (BMI), which is a measure f weight relative t height, she’s verweight. Which is frankly ridiculus. The BMI is deficient. S what shuld we be using instead?
First, let’s talk abut fat—the mst demnized f all bdy cmpnents. Fat is stred in adipse tissue (脂肪组织), which has sme really imprtant rles. It cnserves energy, maintains ur bdy temperature, and serves as a prtective layer fr ur rgans. It als prduces a whle hst f imprtant substances, frm hrmnes that cntrl ur appetite t chemicals that influence the way ur immune systems wrk.
Hwever, nt all fat is equal. It’s the visceral fat—the type surrunding yur rgans—that is thught t be mre harmful t yur health, if there’s t much f it. Having mre visceral fat has been linked t an increased risk f diabetes and cardivascular disease. (That relatinship isn’t straightfrward either, thugh; studies have shwn that remving this “excess” fat desn’t imprve metablic health.) Either way, having a gd idea f hw much fat is in yur bdy, and where it is, wuld be valuable. It might at least give us sme idea f ur risk f metablic disrders. There are quite a few different ways f measuring this.
BMI is the mst widely adpted. It’s the fficial measure the Wrld Health Organizatin uses t define verweight and besity. Unfrtunately, it desn’t tell yu very much abut the fat in yur bdy r hw it crrespnds t yur health. After all, yur bdy weight includes yur bnes, muscles, bld, and everything else, nt just yur fat. Instead, Emma Börgesn, wh studies cardimetablic disease at Aarhus University in Denmark, and her clleagues recmmend the SAD measure, a measure f the size f a persn’s belly frm back t frnt.
28.What des the underlined wrd “deficient” in paragraph 1 mean?
    A.Faulty.B.Accurate.C.Essential.D.Wrthless.

    A.The types f fat.B.The impact f fat.
    C.The functins f fat.D.The cmpsitin f fat.
30.What can be inferred abut the visceral fat?
A.It is the mst harmful fat in the bdy.
B.T much f it may lead t health issues.
C.It is clsely related t metablic disrders.
D.Remving it can lwer the risk f diseases.
31.What might be discussed in the fllwing paragraphs?
A.The cmparisn between the SAD and ther measures.
B.The advantages f using the BMI ver ther measures.
C.Persnal experiences abut the weight lss jurneys.
D.Detailed explanatins f the alternative methd SAD.
A cyclist pedals dwn the street. The cyclist’s brain takes in infrmatin frm what he has perceived but can n lnger see. The brain srts thrugh that infrmatin—the clr, shape and text n signs, fr example—and selects what is mst imprtant. Based n that, he takes the crrect turn and cntinues n.
Freek Van Ede, cgnitive neurscientist (神经学家) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, studies attentin. He uses a lt f bicycling metaphrs. His fcus is nt n external attentin—what smene is lking at r attending t in the mment. Instead, Van Ede is trying t understand what happens inside-hw the brain fcuses n and grabs exactly what it needs frm incming infrmatin t guide future behavir.
Getting a mre real-wrld picture means measuring brain activity in real time, which is why Van Ede uses electr-encephalgraphy (脑电图), paired with eye tracking. In ne experiment, participants watched bjects briefly appear n a screen. Van Ede fund that when a participant was asked t recall smething abut an bject that had been nscreen, their gaze mved quickly tward where the bject had been, even thugh it was n lnger there.
That mvement was detectable as micrsaccades (微跳视)—tiny uncnscius mvements that yur eyes make. When participants shifted their attentin t fcus n where an bject had been, the micrsaccades were systematically pulled in the directin f that attentin shift. This discvery pened new pprtunities fr tracking “the mind’s eye,” Van Ede says, and s decding what infrmatin the brain is using t plan future actin.
Van Ede’s lab has used the technique t shw that when preparing fr the future, the brain desn’t wait until all the infrmatin is in t make a plan. Instead, the brain plans pssible actins as each piece f infrmatin cmes in—even thugh the brain can select nly ne plan in the end. Knwing hw the brain plans actins culd smeday help scientists gain an insight int memry disrders r attentin prblems.
32.Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic?
A.By making an assumptin.B.By giving a relevant example.
C.By making sme cntrasts.D.By listing research data.

    A.Cgnitive neurscience.B.External envirnment.
    C.Internal attentin.D.Uncnscius mvements.
34.What can we learn abut Van Ede’s experiment?
A.Electr-encephalgraphy is the nly methd t use.
B.The brain desn’t plan future actin until all infrmatin has cme in.
C.Participants fail t recall what they perceived previusly.
D.Participants’ micrsaccades crrespnd t their attentin shifts.
35.What aspect may the discvery be applied in?
A.Decding all messages in the brain.B.Imprving cgnitive cmpetence.
C.Knwing sme memry prblems.D.Helping cure certain brain illnesses.
British libraries are in crisis—again. The UK has lst ne in 20 since 2016, with 180 clsed in that time, a BBC investigatin has revealed. The mst disadvantaged areas are arund fur times mre likely t lse a library than the richest. 36
As the educatinal achievement gap between children frm the richest and prest backgrunds has grwn pst-COVID, the rle that libraries can play in imprving the ability t read and stimulating a lve f reading culdn’t be mre vital. 37 The Children’s Laureate (荣誉获得者), Frank Cttrell Byce, stressed their imprtance fr “human cntact”. His mther used the library as an escape frm their limited Liverpl hme. Fr thers, it is a shelter frm bullying, as ne reader tld the Guardian.
38 The activities ffer desperately needed cmpany t islated parents, as well as inspiratins fr children. What’s mre, if yu dn’t have access t the Internet r a printer, if yu struggle with English r can’t keep warm in winter, libraries are nt simply smewhere t brrw bks. 39 Abve all, hmelessness, lneliness, mental health, childcare csts, illiteracy and health educatin are als sme f the challenges that libraries help t deal with as ther basic public services have disappeared.
Despite all these benefits, funding fr libraries is never a pririty, defeated by the mre urgent demands f healthcare and schls. 40 Campaigners are trying t put emphasis n that message befre it is t late. One thing libraries dn’t need is mre wrds. They need n-ging and cnsiderable funding.
A.What can yu d t help t repen the libraries?
B.But cncerns abut their lng-term future remain.
C.But it is nt just bks that make them magical places.
D.Meanwhile, funding fr libraries has halved since 2010.
E.Yu can even spend a whle day there withut buying a cup f tea.
F.Hwever, prperly resurced, they can help relieve the pressures n bth.
G.Where else can yu find craft wrkshps, Leg, and authr events, all fr free?
