Harvard’s Berkman Center fr Internet and Sciety researcher, Dansh Byd, has a message fr parents: almst everything we think we knw abut the way ur kids are using the Internet is wrng. Byd’s new bk, It’s Cmplicated: The Scial Lives f Netwrked Teens, makes the case that the Internet isn’t nearly as scary r damaging t yung peple as many mms and dads believe. As the mther f a 16-year-ld, I fund mst f it fascinating. Here are tw f my biggest takeaways:
Technlgy is nt turning ur teens int scial misfits.
Althugh the image persists that yung peple wuld rather text than talk, and prefer cnnecting n Facebk than hanging ut in persn, Byd says this isn’t true. “Mst f the teens that I met were desperate fr the pprtunity t leave their hmes t gather with friends,” she writes. The truble is that in many cmmunities, yung peple have less freedm than they nce did because they are s ver scheduled and because parents are wrried abut their safety. “The era f being able t run arund after schl as lng as yu are hme befre dark is lng ver.” Byd ntes.
T make up fr this lst freedm, teens have turned t their cmputers. “The success f scial media must be understd partly in relatin t this shrinking scial landscape.” Byd explains. “Facebk, Twitter and ther sites are nt nly new public spaces; they are in many cases the nly ‘public’ spaces where teens can easily cmmunicate with large grups f their peers.”
Adlescents aren’t as Internet savvy as we like t think.
Althugh teens have been called “digital natives” fr having grwn up practically glued t their cmputers and smart-phnes, they still remain simple in many ways abut what they find nline. After all, they’re just kids. “Their engagement with scial media des nt mean that they have the knwledge r skills t make the mst f their nline experiences,” Byd writes. “The s-called ‘digital natives’ are far frm understanding the challenges that they face in the netwrked wrld.”
One area in which yung peple need help is in learning t distinguish between valid and misleading surces f infrmatin. “Making their wn media des nt mean that they naturally have the knwledge r perspective t critically examine what they cnsume.”
Yet many teachers, librarians, and, yes, parents d. “Even thse wh are afraid f technlgy,” Byd says, “can ffer valuable critical perspective.” As a mm r dad, the mst imprtant thing fr yur kid t plug int is yur hard-earned wisdm.
    8. Accrding t Byd, what makes the teens nwadays easily cnsidered scial misfits?
    A. Their ver-packed scheduled.
    B. Parents’ cncerns fr their safety.
C Their preference t cmmunicating thrugh scial netwrks.
    D. The cnvenience f cmmunicatin scial netwrk ffers.
    9. Accrding t the passage, which ne culd be a gd example f an “Internet savvy” persn?
    A. One wh tends t be cheated ver the Internet.
    B. One with the ability t distinguish right frm wrng.
    C. One cmpletely absrbed in scial netwrks all the time.
    D. One wh knws hw t fully and wisely use the Internet.
    10. What suggestin did Byd give parents in the bk?.
    A. Giving kids mre chances t scialize in real wrld.
    B. Building mre public places fr kids’ cmmunicatin.
    C. Equipping kids with their cmmn sense and insight.
D Blcking ut misleading nline surces f infrmatin.
    11. What is the fcus f Danah Byd’s new bk?
    A. The crrect and wise use f the Internet.
    B. Fascinating takeaways fr a mther f a 16-year-ld.
    C. Teens’ real scial lives nline and advice fr parents.
    D. Measures helpful fr parents t tackle the damaging Internet.

Every week at the Maui airprt, a small plane gets laded with 250, 000 passengers. They’re male msquites, key players in a strategy that culd be the last, best hpe fr Hawaii’s endangered birds. There were nce mre than 50 species f Hawaiian hneycreepers, a kind f small bird. Nw, nly 17 species are left, with sme expected t g extinct in the wild as sn as this year. But as temperatures rise with climate change, the msquites are advancing int the birds’ last remaining shelter.
As a last effrt t save the birds, researchers are brrwing a strategy frm public health departments. Where msquites spread human diseases, imprved msquites that are unable t reprduce successfully are ften released, helping t limit the verall msquit ppulatin. Nw, this strategy is being used fr wildlife prtectin. S far, millins f male msquites have been delivered by the small plane in high-elevatin frests n Maui.
Hawaiian hneycreepers are fund nwhere else n Earth and make up an imprtant part f the ecsystem. Experts say it’s difficult t fully understand hw bidiversity lss will affect an entire ecsystem. The disappearance f hneycreepers wuld als mean the lss f species fund nwhere else. Our wrld wuld just becme less clrful, less diverse as we cntinue t let species g extinct.
Finally, the hpe is that Hawaiian hneycreepers will develp immunity t avian malaria, as birds in ther places have dne. And there’s already been a sign it culd be pssible. Recently, ne bird that was thught t be dead reappeared, far frm where it was released, having survived malaria.
    12. What is the primary threat t Hawaiian hneycreepers mentined in paragraph 1?
    A. Intrductin f freign bird species.
    B. A disease spread thrugh msquit bites.
    C. Lss f habitat due t human activities.
    D. Natural disasters affecting the bird ppulatin.
    13. Why were male msquites released in high- elevatin frests n Maui?
    A. T study their ability t survive.B. T test new methds f msquit delivery.
    C. T cntrl the msquit ppulatin.D. T bserve their impact n the ecsystem.
    14. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
    A. The imprtance f bidiversity.
    B. The strategies f prtecting bidiversity.
    C. The ptential results f lsing Hawaiian hneycreepers.
    D. The impact f Hawaiian hneycreepers n the ecsystem.
    15. What is the authr’s attitude t the future f Hawaiian hneycreepers?
    A. Psitive.B. Objective.C. Dubtful.D. Wrried.
