Thugh flying cars aren’t flying acrss ur skies, the technlgy t make them is present, says Xiasng Du, an engineer at Missuri University f Science and Technlgy in Rlla. Many cmpanies, such as Terrafugia, are wrking t make flying cars a reality.
It wuldn’t be practical fr flying cars t take ff like airplanes, Du says. Fr that, they’d need runways, which wuld take up lts f space. Instead, a flying car wuld take ff like a helicpter. Rtating blades (叶片) wuld cut thrugh the air, prducing a frce knwn as lift t bring the flying cars ff the grund.
Anther chice is t add prpellers (螺旋桨) t a flying car’s wings. The wings wuld be tilted (倾斜) upwards, s that the prpellers culd lift the flying car. Once the car takes ff, the wings wuld tilt t lay flat, like thse n a nrmal airplane, says Pat Andersn, the frmer directr f the Eagle Flight Research Center at Embry-Riddle Aernautical University in Daytn a Beach, Flrida.
Imagine a wrld where yu culd beat rush-hur traffic by simply lifting ff the grund and flying ver the ther drivers. This culd be especially useful as the wrld’s ppulatin cntinues t grw. “I think that, finally, we’ll see a day when we use flying cars t help us get arund,” Andersn says. “Or else, Earth will be a pretty cngested place fr traffic.”
“Flying takes much pwer, especially during takeff. Present batteries (电池) can nly supprt flying cars fr 20-30 minutes,” Du says. “And while a car that runs ut f charge can simply pull ver, a flying car wuld fall ut f the sky.” Therefre, it’s imprtant that these batteries last.
After the engineers make sure flying cars are safe and energy-saving, a big step wuld be t make flying cars self-driving. Self-driving cars n the grund are still uncmmn. If self-driving cars ever gt ff the grund, kids f the future might be able t head straight t the skies.
8. Why des the authr mentin helicpters and airplanes?

“The grup f patients wh were using hearing aids regularly had a 24% lwer risk f death than the grup wh never use hearing aids,” Chi says. It means the adults wh were in the habit f wearing hearing aids were less likely t die early.
But this new study can’t prve that it’s the hearing aids that lead t lnger life. It culd be that peple wh regularly use hearing aids are als mre likely t avid being lnely, remain mre active r have reduced risk f falls, which culd explain the increased lngevity (寿命).
Given the benefits, Chi says it’s shcking hw few peple with hearing lss wear hearing aids regularly - just 12%, accrding t her study. And she says anther striking finding is that the peple in the study wh had hearing aids but didn’t use them regularly were as likely t die early as thse wh never used them.
Chi was brn with hearing lss in ne ear. Fr years she says she refused the idea f wearing hearing aids, given that her hearing was gd in the ther ear. But when she became a dctr, she realized she was missing ut. Nw she uses hearing aids regularly. “There were many sunds I was missing,” she says. Nw, her hearing has greatly imprved. “I’m happy I gt hearing aids,” she says.
S, if yu have hearing aids sitting in the back f a drawer, nt being used, Chi says, try them again.
12. Hw did the researchers get the results?

14. What shcks Dr. Janet Chi?
A. Few patients restre hearing.
B. Sme patients fail t get hearing aids.
C. Mst patients ften misuse hearing aids.
D. Many patients refuse t use hearing aids ften.
15. What des the authr aim t d by sharing Dr. Janet Chi’s persnal experience?
