    When Mehmet Öztan mved t America in 2006, he never imagined he'd ne day becme a seed (种子)farmer in West Virginia.He riginally came t America t btain a PhD in civil engineering at Michigan State University. “I didn't have a garden and certainly didn't d much cking in thse first few years,"says Öztan.
    Grwing up in Turkey, Öztan's mther had always prepared traditinal meals using fresh lcal ingredients (食材).It didn't take lng befre he started t miss the flavrs f hme. Öztan phned hme ften and n thse calls, his mther shared her recipes with him.
    Even s, Öztan had difficulty reprducing the fd f his yuth. The greatest challenge, he says, was finding the prper ingredients at lcal grcery stres. The prduce selectin at American grcery stres didn't have the same varieties f prduce that Öztan was used t at hme. Fr example,stres in Turkey tend t ffer a wide selectin f different eggplants, each suited t its wn particular preparatin. But in America, shppers wuld typically nly find ne variety f eggplant available.Meanwhile, Turkey passed a law in 2006 that frbade (禁止) the sale f “unregulated seeds",which was already impacting the diversity f seeds available thrughut the cuntry. Grwing and saving these traditinal varieties, Öztan realized,

    In 2010, Öztan and his wife mved t Flrida, and his search fr the traditinal seeds f Turkey began. A few years later, in 2013, the cuple started Tw Seeds in a Pd. Since its funding, Tw Seeds in a Pd has intrduced mre than100 Turkish varieties f vegetables t the American market. The cmpany's website serves as a database fr hundreds f crp varieties frm Turkey.
