A heart attack ccurs when a bld vessel (血管) distributing xygenated bld t the heart gets blcked and a piece f heart tissue dies frm the deprivatin f xygen, accrding t Flavi Fentn, a prfessr f physics wh studies bth human and ther animal species’ hearts. “Since animals’ hearts are very similar,” Fentn said, “mst animals hearts, in principle, culd have heart attacks.”
But that’s nt what happened. Fr instance, heart attacks ccur very rarely in dgs. Even the chimps, which are nt nly clsely related t humans but als share similar risk factrs fr heart disease, d nt have heart attacks. Even in mice and rabbits that are genetically mdified t have high chlesterl (胆固醇) and bld fats fr the purpse f inducing athersclersis and ther human diseases, actual heart attacks rarely ccur, accrding t a 2009 paper.
Despite previus reprts that ther animals mstly dn’t have heart attacks, the truth is that there haven’t been a lt f experiments investigating this questin. "Yu can bserve that an animal has suddenly died, but very rarely wuld yu actually lk fr the cause f it. We just dn’t knw whether they suffer heart attacks," said Tmasz Owerkwicz, a physilgist at Califrnia State University.
But based n heart structures, researchers can make predictins abut which creatures are mst likely t have heart attacks. Owerkwicz and Fentn are ding such experiments n alligatrs (短吻鳄). "In their heart, yu find the vessels; and they have spngy (海绵状的) tissues, arund which there’s a lt f bld, nt necessarily cming frm the vessels," Fentn said.
Accrding t the researchers’ experiments s far, alligatrs dn’t have heart attacks. The alligatr’s heart tissue had n signs f cell death, Fentn added.

In the U. S., peple eat mre prtein than they need t, which might nt be bad fr human health, but des pse a prblem fr the cuntry’s waterways. The natin’s wastewater is laded with the leftvers frm prtein digestin: nitrgen cmpunds(氯化合物) that can feed harmful algal blms(藻华) and pllute the air and drinking water.
Maya Almaraz, a bigechemist at the University f Califrnia, Davis, and her team wanted t see hw much f this nitrgen entered int the U. S. wastewater system because f a prtein-heavy diet. The researchers fund that the majrity f nitrgen pllutin present in wastewater—sme 67 t 100 precent—is a by-prduct f water peple cnsume.
Once it enters the envirnment, the nitrgen can have a series f eclgical impacts. It helps algae grw much faster than they wuld nrmally, which is harmful t humans, ther animals and plants. And when the algae eventually die, the prblem is nt ver. Micrrganisms(微生物) that feed n dead algae use up the xygen in the water, leading t "dead znes," where many species simply cannt survive, in rivers, lakes and ceans.
Althugh it is pssible t treat algal blms, many f the current methds are nt always effective at getting rid f all f the harmful grwth. Sme f these methds can even lead t additinal pllutin. S the best strategy fr dealing with the effects f nitrgen pllutin is preventin, says Patricia Glibert, an cean scientist at the University f Maryland. Almaraz and her team suggest that cntrlling nitrgen pllutin culd be apprached mre quickly with a change in eating habits that culd save billins f dllars in the lng term.
