The Children f Vilence series by Dris Lessing
This series f bks rcked my wrld. They are nvels cnnected by a main character, Martha Quest, and set in what was then called Rhdesia, where Lessing grew up. She was writing abut sexism and racism in a time when thse wrds weren’t really used yet. They had what was called the clr bar back then, and as far as sexism, it was just called life. Nbdy was remarking n it. But these bks were abut these big, universal themes that I was feeling s pwerfully in my wn life. It was what I saw in my little twn. It was a revelatin t me that fictin culd be abut these things that everyne in the wrld shuld be thinking abut. That larger purpse f fictin was revealed t me thrugh these bks.
    Cannery Rw, Jhn Steinbeck
I always lved t read, and I kept a jurnal since I was eight. As a yung adult I wrte petry and stries which l did nt shw t anybdy. But I did nt think I culd be a writer. In my small twn, my small wrld, it just didn’t seem pssible. I thught, I dn’t knw anyne imprtant. I just knw regular, rdinary peple. Yu can’t write abut that. And then a bk fell int my hands that was this exquisite nvel abut this funny grup f rdinary peple living in an rdinary place. It was like the scales fell frm my eyes. It shwed me fictin desn’t have t be abut famus peple r heric lives.

When yu g n a hliday, is yur jurney just an annying incnvenience t get yu there? Have yu ever been t busy thinking abut the next place yu’re ging t visit t enjy where yu are? Or d yu ever return frm a hliday exhausted frm t much sightseeing? If s, yu might want t cnsider slw travel.
What exactly is slw travel? It’s certainly nt abut ding everything at a snail’s pace r using the slwest frm f transprt. Instead, it’s abut cnnecting t the lcal culture and the peple wh live there. The idea is that yu experience life in any place yu visit as if yu were frm there—if yu were slw traveling, yu might rent a place t stay, explre n ft r by lcal transprt, shp in neighbrhd markets and eat typical fd frm the area. In ther wrds, yu really get t knw ne r a few places rather than seeing nly a little f many different places. Slw travel is a mindset —a way f thinking —it is abut appreciating and making the mst f every mment f yur stay.
The benefits f slw travel are multiple. Fr a start, an imprtant psitive factr is that yu’ll save mney. Why? Transprt, especially flights and renting a car, is ne f the biggest expenses n a hliday and using alternatives brings the csts dwn. Als, staying in an apartment r huse means yu can eat in and enjy the pleasure f lcal shpping. Anther advantage is that yu’ll meet mre lcal peple wh can tell yu interesting places t g and give great advice. In additin, since yu wn’t be sticking t a tight schedule, yu’ll have time t explre in depth and make plans as yu g alng.
The benefits dn’t end there. Slw travel is less stressful t and yu get t see places that yu wuld never have seen therwise. Getting ff the beaten track and finding unexpected treasures, such as a beautiful square r a wnderful little restaurant that aren’t in any guidebks, are half the fun f ging t new places. Yu’re far mre likely t remember these enriching experiences fr years t cme than visiting yet anther museum, cafe packed with turists r city filled with sightseers, just because all the travel bks say they are the best places t g. Finally, slw travel is mre envirnmentally friendly. As a result, nt nly will yu reduce yur carbn ftprint, but yu’ll als prmte sustainable travel.
