    As part f a survey f substance use and mental health amng high schl students in Ls Angeles, the study cmpared the start f tbacc use amng 222 students wh had used e-cigarettes, but nt any ther tbacc prducts, and 2,308 wh had neither used e-cigarettes r any ther tbacc prducts when initially surveyed at the start f ninth grade. The 2,530 students wh initially reprted never using tbacc underwent fllw-up assessments after six and 12 mnths. Students were asked abut lifetime and past six-mnth use f e-cigarettes r any ther frms f tbacc prducts.
    During the first six mnths after being surveyed, 30.7 percent f thse wh had used e-cigarettes started using tbacc prducts, such as cigarettes, and cigars, cmpared t nly 8.1 percent f thse wh had never used e-cigarettes. Over the fllwing six mnths leading int the start f 10th grade, 25.2 percent f e-cigarette users had used tbacc prducts, cmpared t just 9.3 percent f nnusers.
    “While teen tbacc use has fallen in recent years, this study cnfirms that we shuld cntinue t clsely watch teen smking patterns,” said NIDA Directr Nra D. Vlkw, M.D. “Parents and teens shuld recgnize that althugh e-cigarettes might nt have the same harmful effects f regular cigarettes, they d carry a risk f addictin.”
    “Recreatinal e-cigarette use is becming increasingly ppular amng teens wh have never smked tbacc,” said Adam M. Leventhal, Ph.D., the first authr n the study. “While we cannt cnclude that e-cigarette use directly leads t smking, this research raises cncerns that recent increases in yuth e-cigarette use culd ultimately lead t the spread f smking-related illness."
