I used t tell my children that they were smart, because I was impressed by their rapid grwth. I remember clearly watching my daughter figure ut hw t build a Leg huse that wuld stand up n its wn, and thinking: Lk at this tiny architectural genius.
But decades f research nw suggest that we shuld nt tell ur children they’re "smart" when they d impressive things. When I first heard it, I felt instinctively annyed. But after I dug int the research, I was persuaded. It all ges back t smething called "grwth" mindset(心态), a term develped and ppularized by Carl Dweck, a prfessr f psychlgy at Stanfrd. Prfessr Dweck believes that we can change ur abilities thrugh effrt and strategy. The alternative t a grwth mindset is a "fixed" mindset—the idea that ur abilities are inbrn and can’t be changed. When we praise ur children fr being "smart," based n victries like ding well n a test, we’re uncnsciusly encuraging them t believe that if they d prly r make mistakes, they’re nt smart.
It’s nt just what we say that matters, but hw we tlerate ur children’s failures. A 2016 study by Dweck shwed that parents’ "failure mind-sets" affect their children mre than their views n intelligence. In ther wrds, if parents think that failure is shameful, their children are mre likely t be afraid f making mistakes. The study cncludes that everyne is actually a mixture f fixed and grwth mindsets, cntinually evlving with experience. Whatever we say r dn’t say t ur kids, the key is t get them mre cmfrtable with failures big r small.
It’s helpful fr kids t understand that yu make mistakes and learn hw they happen. When yu chat with them, yu can describe what yu learned, r hw yu strategized a slutin. "Yu dn’t have t deny yu have negative emtinal reactins," Dweck said. "We, as a sciety, dn’t d that enugh because we feel embarrassed when we make mistakes." But if we discuss ur missteps mre and explain hw we vercame them, ur children can learn t d the same.
8.What did the authr initially think f the research’s advice?
    A.Cnvincing.
    B.Advanced.
    C.Inaccessible.
    D.Unacceptable.

D.they are impressive due t their gd grades n tests

We usually hear the term addictin used when talking abut drugs r alchl. But researchers are finding that certain fds can trigger the same feelings as drugs. It all cmes dwn t what’s happening in the brain. When we feel a happy rush, it’s due t a fld f the feel-gd chemical dpamine in the striatum (终脑的皮层). The striatum gets a dpamine rush when smething gd happens. Drugs and alchl can cause a similar high. S, it turns ut, can sme ppular snack fds with a high level f carbhydrates and fats.
The prblem isn’t with all fds cntaining carbhydrates and fats. Fruit is full f sugar. Oats and ther whle grains have lts f carbs. Nuts and meat have fat. But such unprcessed fds eaten in a frm that’s similar t hw they grew — als cntain ther nutrients, such as fiber, that slw digestin. That limits hw quickly ur bdies can absrb the nutrients.
Ckies, candy, sda, fries and ther highly prcessed fds, hwever, lack thse additinal nutrients. Such fds cntain ingredients that have been highly changed frm their natural state. They’re full f easy-t-absrb carbhydrates (such as simple sugars) and added fats. What’s mre, they ften cntain ingredients that dn’t naturally ccur tgether. "Sugar and fat dn’t cme tgether in nature," says Gearhardt, a psychlgist at the University f Michigan in Ann Arbr. But highly prcessed fds ften "have unnaturally high levels f bth carbhydrates and fat." When we eat these fds, we get a quick "hit" f carbs and fats that give the brain a bst. That makes us want t eat them again and again. Thus we becme addicted.
"Pay attentin t what yu eat", Gearhardt says. That desn’t mean yu can’t have a dnut r pizza nw and then. But just be sure yu’re aware f what yu’re eating. When yu have a chice, fight back and take cntrl f yur health by including fds that nurish yur bdy and brain.
12.Why are peple addicted t drugs?
A.Because they cntain a lt f the chemical dpamine.
B.Because they cause a high level f carbhydrates and fats.
C.Because they help smething gd happen t the striatum.
D.Because they prduce strng feel-gd chemical in the brain.
13.Which fd can limit the speed f the absrptin f its nutrients?
    A.Dnuts.
    B.Meat.
    C.Candy.
    D.Fries.
14.Which statement is true accrding t Gearhardt in paragraph 3?
A.Ckies are full f easy-t-absrb carbhydrates and fibers.
B.Carbhydrates and fats are mixed tgether in their natural state.
C.The unprcessed fd rich in sugar usually d nt cntain fat.
D.Highly prcessed fds lack additinal nutrients t stp digestin.
15.What is the purpse f the authr in writing this passage?
A.T advise peple t avid addictive snack fds.
B.T warn peple f the side effect f snack fds.
C.T infrm readers f the findings f a latest research.
D.T analyse negative pinins twards nutrients in fds.

As the hliday seasn appraches, many parents find themselves facing a tricky prblem: Hw t talk abut Santa Claus with their yung children, especially as thse children begin t develp dubts abut Santa’s existence. ① _ Here we feel cmfrtable making three recmmendatins.
First, respect yur child’s grwing independence f mind. ② Children tend t discver the truth abut Santa when they are arund 7 r 8, althugh the age varies cnsiderably. In ur research, we fund that children clser t 11 r 12 when they discvered the truth were mre likely t feel nly negative emtins arund it.
Secnd, listen t yur child’s questins and make sure yu knw what he r she is actually asking. Fr example, if yur child asks yu hw Santa fits dwn narrw chimneys, dn’t assume that yur chice is either t lie r t give up the game. Cnsider answering by asking yur child what she thinks r talking abut what “sme peple” believe. ③
Third, even if yur child has a negative experience learning the truth abut Santa, all is nt lst. ④ A small percentage f kids reprted negative emtins that lasted mre than a year after learning the truth. In such cases, parents can sften the blw by acknwledging their child’s feelings. And it helps t talk abut why they have included Santa in their hliday traditins.
⑤ These same principles apply when parents are trying t figure them ut. Fllwing yur children’s lead, using their questins as the starting pint fr discussin and being aware f their sensitivities can all help t push frward a creative and jyful explratin f the wrld.
    A. Many peple find it hard t accept the truth.
    B. There are prblems here beynd Santa Claus.
    C. Sme children may be mre sensitive than thers t being lied t.
    D. Each family has decided t include Santa in their hliday traditins.
