When she was yung, Sylvia Clt-Lacay nticed she was particularly fascinated with n-
screen stries. Media ffered an escape when life was hard.
Watching Glee, she was thrilled t see a character wh used a wheelchair like her — until she
learned the rle was played by an actr wh was nt disabled. “I remember feeling s heartbrken and
betrayed (背叛), fr n reasn ther than the fact that I felt seen fr nce as a 10-year-ld watching
Glee, and the pwer f that,” says Clt-Lacay.
Nw, Clt-Lacay is graduating frm Stanfrd with a degree in film and media studies and is
heading t Hllywd with a passin fr increasing disability representatin and diversity in general.
“Representatin matters, and I als think that diverse strytelling is what is mst cmpelling (令人信
    服的),” she said.
Representatin shaped Clt-Lacay’s path t Stanfrd. As a disabled Latina girl, she struggled t
imagine ging t cllege, in part because she never saw adult wheelchair users in the media. In high
schl, she met anther Stanfrd student wh was als a wheelchair user at a cnference. Suddenly, a
    new stry felt pssible.
When she arrived at Stanfrd, Clt-Lacay knew she was ften the first visibly disabled student
her prfessrs and peers had interacted with. Her parents had taught her t advcate fr herself, and
while she desn’t claim the label “activist”, she asks fr what she needs.
“Yes, there’s smething that is in my DNA that makes my bdy different frm ther peple’s.
But really, what makes me disabled is that peple treat me differently, and I d nt have equal access
    t resurces,” she said.
She brught this perspective t her Stanfrd experience. Fr her senir thesis (论文), she wrte a
screenplay examining hw grwing up with a disability impacts ne’s relatinship with neself and
    ne’s understanding f the wrld.
Clt-Lacay aims t becme an agent fr screenwriters and film directrs. She hpes that
sharing her stry gives thers the example she wished fr when she was yung,
    24. Hw did Clt-Lacay initially feel while watching Glee?
    A. Hnred and cnfident. B. Overjyed and inspired.
    C. Heartbrken and betrayed. D. Srrwful and sympathetic.

    A. Her keen interest in films and media.
    B. Diverse stries she heard abut disability.
    C. An example f a disabled Stanfrd student.
    D. A passin fr increasing disability representatin.
    26. What insight did Clt-Lacay gain abut living with a disability?

D yu have a brain fr math? New research indicates that levels f tw key neurtransmitters
    ( 脑 神 经 传 递 素 ) —— glutamate ( 谷 氨 酸 ) and gamma-aminbutyric acid (GABA)can predict
mathematical abilities, suggesting brain chemistry may be playing a rle in thse wh find math easy.
The new study, published in the jurnal PLOS Bilgy, recruited 255 subjects extending a range
f six-year lds in primary schl t university students. The research fcused n glutamate and
GABA, knwn t play a rle in brain plasticity (可塑性) and learning. Based n prir research, the
fcus was n tw brain regins linked with mathematical abilities —— the left intraparietal sulcus
(IPS 顶叶内沟) and the left middle frntal gyrus (MFG 脑额中回).
The results were interestingly different. In the yungest subjects high GABA levels and lw
glutamate levels in the left IPS were cnsistently assciated with high math skills. But in the lder
university grup the exact ppsite was seen: lw GABA and high glutamate were linked with strng
mathematical abilities. Levels f bth neurtransmitters in the MFG did nt assciate with math skills.
The grup was tested twice ver 18 mnths, allwing the researchers t see if these
neurtransmitter levels culd predict mathematical ability int the future. And it wrked, with
neurtransmitter levels effectively predicting ne’s success n math tests cmpleted a year and a half
    later.
Anther recent study frm the same research team lked specifically at GABA levels in MFG f
14 t 18 year lds. That research indicated MFG GABA levels culd effectively predict whether a
student was still studying math r had ceased that subject years prir.

Chen Kadsh, ne f the researchers wrking n the study, says this may indicate math
educatin can help stimulate the develpment f key brain regins. Further research will wrk n
whether certain learning interventins can help thse children less interested in math s these brain
regins still get the develpmental wrkut they need.
“Nt every adlescent enjys math s we need t investigate pssible alternatives, such as
training in lgic and reasning that engage the same brain area as math.” says Chen Kadsh.
    28. What is the new study aimed at?
    A. Finding the tie between brain chemistry and math.
    B. Explring mental develpment f the subjects.
    C. Testing the link between brain regins.

    B. Lw MFG glutamate means pr math ability.
    C. Neurtransmitters in the MFG affect math skills.
    D. Math educatin may help with brain develpment.
    30. Why des Chen Kadsh prpse investigating alternatives t math educatin?
    A. T make math easier and mre apprachable.
    B. T increase students’ engagement with math cncepts.
    C. T reduce stress and anxiety assciated with math.
    D. T stimulate the same brain regins thrugh different activities.

Acrss the flat plateau f AlUla in Saudi Arabia, shades f gray-brwn sil are dtted with areas
f dark rck — and a clearly defined circle f stnes. Unmistakably cnstructed by humans, this
structure, called “standing stne circles” by archaelgists, was built arund 7,500 years ag by a
peple we barely knw fr a purpse we have lng misunderstd.
In 2019, archaelgists frm the University f Western Australia began excavating these
standing stne circles. Their initial idea was that these were structures built by Nelithic nmads (新石
器时代的游牧民) fr sme lng-frgtten religius practices. Hwever, excavating at multiple sites,
they fund what turned ut t be archaelgical pay dirt—dmestic rubbish. The remains f discarded
    高三 12 月考英语试卷 6
animal bnes, husehld tls, and even jewelry, have reclassified the standing stne circles as
    Nelithic hmes.
Standing stne circles seem t have sprung up arund 5,800 t 5,500 B. C. This cincided with a
warmer climate in the regin that brught mre regular rainfall and a landscape f rich grasses and trees,
gd cnditins fr raising cattle and gats. But these were als gd cnditins fr building permanent
structures. Mre abundant vegetatin meant less pressure t keep mving the animals t fresh
grasslands, which made building hmes mre wrthwhile. This, and the plateau’s abundance f stnes,
may have encuraged the nmads t stay a while and build.
Excavatins f these settlements are revealing smething f this peple’s way f life. They kept
cattle and gats fr meat but cntinued t hunt and gather t expand their diet with hare, fruits and nuts.
The many grinding(磨碎) stnes fund n the sites suggest inhabitants were regularly grinding grains,
but these were likely t be gathered rather than farmed. The plateau sites have als revealed tls made
with materials frm the sandstne valleys and jewelry shaped frm shells frm the Red Sea—these
Nelithic peple had a cmplex culture invlving travel and prbably exchange.
The revelatin verturns many f ur assumptins abut Nelithic AlUla. Here were a peple
mre settled and mre civilized than histry has given them credit fr. Their stry is just beginning t
be revealed, but already a very different picture f early AlUla is emerging.
    32. What did the 2019 excavatin finally identify the “standing stne circles” as?
    A. Religius sites. B. Dmestic buildings.
    C. Rubbish statins. D. Natural wnders.
    33. What was a cntributing factr in the building f the standing stne circles?
    A. The need t stre gds. B. The wrsening climate.
    C. The richness f plants. D. The desire t raise mre animals.
    34. What is mst likely true abut Nelithic peple’s way f life in AlUla?
    A. They made tls and jewelry purely frm lcal materials.
    B. They planted crps and kept cattle and gats.
    C. They had interactins with ther grups.
    D. They relied entirely n hunting and gathering fr fd.
    35. What is the purpse f the text?
    A. T prmte a histrical site. B. T intrduce an ancient ppulatin.
    C. T prvide sme new insights. D. T argue fr sme lng- held beliefs.

Everyne knws that it takes 21 days t develp a new habit. We prbably we this particular
example f pp-psychlgy wisdm t Maxwell Maltz, the plastic surgen wh claimed t have
bserved that individuals wh had had an arm r leg cut ff tk an average f nly 21 days t adjust t
the lss f a limb (肢体). 36 And therefre it must take 21 days t change a habit, maybe,
    perhaps!
37 , as a new study by psychlgist Phillippa Lally and her clleagues helps cnfirm. On
average, her subjects, wh were trying t learn new habits such as eating fruit daily r ging jgging,
tk a depressing 66 days befre reprting that the behavir had becme unchangingly autmatic.
38 . It culdn’t be just as easy t start eating a few mre apples as t start finding five hurs a week
    t study Chinese.
Self-help culture sticks t the fictin f the 21-day rule, prbably because it makes habit change
sund basically easy. 39 . Our brains are designed t take shrt cuts, making as many behavirs
as pssible autmatic. “Really,” asks the psychlgist Ian Newby-Clark, “what wuld be the pint f
having a habit that didn’t free up yur mind t fcus n mre pressing matters?” Habits are meant t
    be difficult t change.
Anther prblem is that we tend t think abut habit change wrngly. We want t, say, stp
watching s much T V, but n the ther hand, demnstrably, we als want t watch lts f TV—after all,
we keep ding it. We’re stuck deep in what the Greeks called “akrasia”: deciding n the best curse f
actin, then ding smething else. 40 Simply stp watching TV is like dealing with a leaky
bathrm tap by repainting the kitchen. What’s required is an alternative way t feel relaxed and happy.
Maybe by lking at the prblem differently we can slip ut f them.
    A. One prblem with this is discuragingly simple: changing habits is hard
    B. And sme habits, unsurprisingly, were harder than thers t make stick
    C. Therefre, he reasned the same must be true f all big changes
    D. The way rund this is t see that habits are respnses t needs
    E. We believe that habits are purely a matter f willpwer
    F. The 21-day rule des have sme scientific basis
    G. This is, f curse, nnsense

Little free libraries have been dtting cmmunities arund the glbe since the first ne was set up
in Hudsn, Wiscnsin in 2009. During the pandemic (疫情), many peple turned these libraries int
little free stres t help neighbrs in need. The stres were filled with canned fd, peanut butter, and
tilet paper. In Australia, a mther and her daughter decided t pen a free plant stand t share flwers
    and jy with her cmmunity.
Because f the pandemic, peple were enclsed and lnely. This was certainly true f Vicky
Rbinsn and her daughter Rachel, wh live in Redan, a suburb f Ballarat in Victria.
The pair watched peple walking by wh lked sad and decided t cme up with a way t cheer
them up. “S we thught, ‘what can we create thrugh ur hme educatin that can put a smile n
peple’s faces?’” the mther and daughter said.
Vicky lked at her frnt grassland and flwering rse bushes and suddenly had a bright idea.
Understanding that gardening was a natural treatment that helped her relax, she came up with the idea
fr a plant exhibitin stand that was like a little free plant library.
Her husband is a cupbard maker s he built a tw-stried stand n their prperty line and filled
it with yung plants and succulents (多肉植物) reprduced frm their wn plants. In bld letters, there
is a sign that reads, “Need a plant? Take a plant. Have a plant? Leave a plant.”
Despite having lived in Redan fr 30 years, Vicky said that she never felt cnnected with her
cmmunity befre. There is little cst invlved in setting up the little free plant library. “It’s all wrth it
just t see their smiles. We have develped trust with the cmmunity,” she said. “It leaves a legacy. It
creates a bnd in a circle, frm generatin t generatin.”

They had set ut t brighten their neighbrs’ lives with greenery, and the swift disappearance f the
plants frm the stand was a clear sign that their idea was being embraced. As the sun set, they reflected

befre. Little did they knw that their stand was abut t becme a symbl f giving and grwth.
The next day a wnder happened. As Vicky and Rachel walked t their plant stand, they were

lush green plants greeted them, and a small nte hung frm the sign. “Thank yu fr yur kindness.
