耶稣的出生是有一段故事的，耶稣是因着圣灵成孕，由童女马利亚所生的。神更派遣使者加伯列在梦中晓谕约瑟，叫他不要因为马利亚未婚怀孕而不要她，反而要与她成亲，把那孩子起名为“耶稣”，意思是要他把百姓从罪恶中救出来。

“Happy Christmas”也是正确的表达，不过只有伊丽莎白二世才这么说。因为英国王室向来讲究传统，而Merry有“微醉的”的意思，说Merry Christmas会有失女王的身份，所以每次都会说“Happy Christmas”，久而久之，在英国就有许多人和女王一样不再用merry这个词了。
有关“Merry Christmas”起源的问题，其实现在还是比较模糊的。最早用“Merry Christmas”可以追溯至1534年，英国的罗马天主教主教约翰·费舍尔写给英国政治家托马斯·克伦威尔的圣诞祝贺信中。到了1843年，英国的伟大作家，《双城记》作者查尔斯·狄更斯在他的作品多次使用Merry Christmas，从此便流行起来。

“Happy Christmas”是不是错的？
其实，在古代，Christmas并非一个单词，而是词组Christ's mass。Christ来自于希腊语Christs，是“基督、救世主”的意思。而mass则来自于拉丁语missa，是“弥撒”的意思。经过演变，人们才逐渐把Christ和mass写成一个Christmas。
Xmas的由来：在古希腊语中，“Christ 基督”这个称号被写成 Χριστός，后来转写为拉丁语的 Christus，英文含义就是“The Aninted”，指曾经受到神圣膏油涂抹的人，即“救世主”。
Χριστός 这个单词开头的字母，是希腊字母表中的第22个字母，在英语中称为 Chi，读音是 / kaɪ /。而Chi 的写法和英语字母表中的第 24 个字母 X 非常相似。于是，当年能够阅读希腊语原文的僧侣学者们，就用 Xmas 来作为 Christmas 的简写形式。
圣诞节为什么拼写为“Xmas”？
那Xmas到底怎么读？其实，一般都是读作“Christmas”的，但是也有人按字面上的“X”发音，但是这样略显“非主流”。

圣诞老人为奥丁神后裔，也传说称圣诞老人由圣·尼古拉而来，所以圣诞老人也称St.Nichlas。据说他原是小亚细亚每拉城的主教，名叫圣尼古拉，死后被尊为圣徒，是一位身穿红袍、头戴红帽的白胡子老头。每年圣诞节他驾着鹿拉的雪橇从北方而来，由烟囱进入各家，把圣诞礼物装在袜子里挂在孩子们的床头上或火炉前。所以，西方人过圣诞节时，父母把给孩子的圣诞礼物装在袜子里，圣诞夜时挂在孩子们的床头上。第二天，孩子们醒来后的第一件事就是在床头上寻找圣诞老人送来的礼物。
