The student arrived early, sat frnt and center, and std ut in my classrm in mre ways than ne. I’d say that he was abut 40 years lder than his classmates in my undergraduate cmmunicatins class. He eagerly jumped int class discussins, with his humr and wisdm f experience. And he was always respectful f the ther students’ perspectives, as if each f them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile—and he left with ne t.
“These students gave me the cnfidence that I didn’t need t feel bad abut my age,” Valencia says.
One day, I sptted Valencia n campus. He said he wuld have t stp taking classes that semester and reapply fr next year. By then, he hped t have earned enugh mney and have his student-lan papers in rder. He asked seriusly whether he culd still sit in n my cmmunicatins class.
Sure, I said. But he wuldn’t get any credit.
    N prblem, he said.
Sn there he was again, back at his ld desk, jumping int ur discussins n hw t find and tell stries in Ls Angeles—a 63-year-ld man with as much energy and curisity as any f the yungsters in class.
A lt f Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he culdn’t affrd that semester’s tuitin but was still ding the hmewrk. “Here he is, willingly taking a class fr the delight f it and benefit f learning,”says Jessica Espinsa, a 25-year-ld junir. Afterward, I verheard Valencia wanted t stay in schl until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years t finish cmmunity cllege, s he had a lng way t g.
There is smething splendidly unreasnable abut Valencia’s determinatin t get a fur-year degree and then a master’s. At his current pace, he’ll be 90 when he finally hangs all that paper n the wall. But that desn’t seem especially relevant. He’s fund all the yuthful energy and academic pprtunity stimulating. Valencia’s grade in my class this semester will nt shw up n his transcripts(成绩单). But I’m giving him an A—and in the mst imprtant ways, it cunts.

A vide circulated n scial media earlier this year shwing a turist pening the dr f a vehicle, reaching ut an arm and attempting t strke a passing liness. The liness shrugged him ff, but it culd have easily gne hrribly wrng.
Reckless behaviur arund wildlife risks the safety f bth peple and animals. Peple risk being attacked, mauled (撕咬) and pssibly killed, while animals can be harmed, remved r put dwn, irrespective f whether they were nly defending themselves. Animal attacks can als cast a destinatin in a negative light, causing temprary clsures r scaring ff visitrs. All just s smene culd bast that they had strked a lin r captured a mment n a camera phne.
“Turists are getting mre and mre reckless arund wildlife and the surce f the prblem is scial media.” says wildlife phtgrapher Anette Msshachers. “Peple risking their lives r ding stupid things with wildlife are after ‘likes’ and fllwers, smething t shw ff n scial media,” says Mssbacher. “The greater the risk, the mre ‘likes’ they get. With sme clients, it seems like a sickness r addictin.”
Yet scial media is nt entirely t blame. Peple have always taken risks fr an experience. Flish behavir and a tendency t get ccky arund dangerus animals must have been arund since the dawn f humanity. A hunger fr attentin nline might drive sme f the current madness, but sme individuals might be trying t recreate a piece f the actin they have seen n televisin. Perhaps the adrenaline (肾上腺激素) rush when clse t wild animals causes an evapratin f cmmn sense.
“There’s a wrrying lack f awareness that animals several times ur size, weight, speed and strength can easily hurt us,”says wildlife phtgrapher David Llyd. “I dn’t think parks are ding enugh t raise awareness. Turists need t knw hw their presence can affect wildlife. A gd example is cheetahs (猎豹) n vehicle rftps. It may be a thrill fr the bystanders, but the cnsequences if a mther cheetah falls ff wuld be severe. She wuld n lnger be able t hunt, s her cubs culd easily starve.”
“Peple aren’t getting the educatin abut why they need t stay away frm wildlife, including aviding diseases, keeping peple secure and letting wildlife be wild,” says Philip Muruthi, vice president f species cnservatin and science fr the African Wildlife Fundatin. “We need t educate turists thrugh signs, pamphlets and frntline drivers. We shuld stick t guidelines, and there needs t be enfrcement thrugh the law.”
    8. What can we learn abut reckless behaviur arund wildlife?
    A. It harms turists mre than animals.
    B. It enables turists t get intimate with animals.
C It may bring mre prfits t a turist destinatin.
    D. It may get animals killed fr defending themselves.
    9. As fr Mssbacher’s pinin n what drives peple’s reckless behavir, the authr is______.
    A. sympatheticB. disapprving
    C. dubtfulD. indifferent
    10. What des the underlined wrd “ccky” in Paragraph 4 prbably mean?
    A. Selfish.B. Frightened.
    C. Arrgant.D. Shcked.
    11. What can we cnclude frm the passage?
    A. Parks are expected t take mre respnsibilities fr educating turists.
    B. Raising turists’ awareness means stressing the danger f animals t them.
    C. Mre regulatin f the turist industry is the key t raising turists’ awareness.
    D. Penalties rather than educatin can stp peple taking silly risks arund wildlife.
    D
A new study has fund human feelings can accurately be expressed numerically and have mre predictive pwer fr hw we behave than frmal studies f sciecnmic factrs like husehld incme and emplyment status.
The study c-authr Andrew Oswald, a prfessr f ecnmics and behaviral science gathered infrmatin frm nearly 700,000 peple, wh were asked annually ver a three-decade perid hw they felt n a numerical scale abut their jb, spuse, health and hme. Using the data cllected, researchers cnstructed statistical mdels t shw hw peple felt and the actins they tk as a result f their reprted feelings. The study fund that ratings f life satisfactin had a direct linear (线性的) relatinship t actins peple subsequently take. Participants wh rated their jb satisfactin as a 2 ut f 7 had a 25% prbability f quitting their jb. Thse wh rated a 6 ut f 7 had nly a 10 percent prbability f quitting. The same was true acrss ther measures like marriage, health and husing.
Previus research has als shwn data abut feelings predict human utcmes, but nt in such a linear fashin; the degree f satisfactin served as a gd predictr f future actins. Additinally, ecnmists have previusly been critical f feelings data because they cnsidered them unscientific and unreliable. But this study shws sciecnmic factrs have a lesser prbability f predicting human behavir than data n feelings.
Thugh the study shws numbers can quantify feelings, researchers are still a bit cnfused as t why estimates f seemingly subjective feelings can be such gd predictrs f future actins. Accrding t Oswald, a number f factrs culd be at play. Humans are very experienced in cmparative thinking and are able t scale their wn life satisfactin against that f their neighbrs. We’re als accustmed t using measuring devices fr ther aspects f life like temperature, distance and weight, s it shuldn’t be t surprising that we’re able t measure ur feelings in a similarly accurate way. Anther study c-authr Caspar Kaiser says that it may als be because we cmmunicate ur feelings and d it in a scaled fashin every day. This culd be why it cmes ut in the data mre accurately than in bjective markers.
Ori Heffetz, an ecnmics prfessr wh was nt invlved in the study, says that this research shws feelings data shuldn’t be underestimated even if they’re mre difficult t study. “Scientists wh ignre this d s at their wn risk,” he says.
Lking ahead, Kaiser hpes this same data can be studied in lwer-incme cuntries s that it can be applied universally t places with varied levels f ecnmic develpment. But mre than anything else he’s interested in studying why feelings wrk s well.
    12. Paragraph 2 is mainly abut .
    A. research prcess and findings
    B. research tpic and significance
    C. research subjects and purpse
    D. research data cllectin and analysis
    13. What can we knw abut the study?
    A. It als applies t peple frm lwer-incme cuntries.
    B. It challenges the pinin that feelings data are unreliable.
    C. It explains why ratings f feelings can fresee future actins.
    D. It first shws data abut feelings can predict human behavir
    14. What is Ori’s attitude twards the study?
    A. Neutral.B. Skeptical.C. Supprtive.D. Cautius.
    15. Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
    A. Hw Yu Rate Yur Life Predicts Yur Future Behavir
    B. Feelings Frecast Actins Better than Ecnmic Factrs
    C. Why Yur Feelings Affect Yur Future Actins
    D. Ranking Every Aspect f Yur Life Cunts
