The whistling-thrn tree is a cmmn sight n the plains f the east African grassland. Each tree is hme t native acacia ants, which shelter inside the spines and drink juice frm the tree. In return, when an elephant tries t eat the tree, ants climb up inside its nse and bite frm the inside ut. This has allwed the trees and the ants t grw well.
The big-headed ants arrived in this area between 2002 and 2005. They kill lcal acacia ants wherever they find them, rbbing lcal whistling-thrn trees f their brave defenders against hungry elephants. Withut ants t bite them, the elephants tear up the thrn trees, pening up the grassland, which makes it harder fr lins t catch their preferred zebra meals.
In the new study, wildlife eclgist Jake Gheen and his clleagues culd have used drnes r satellite images t study tree cver, but “we dn’t have that kind f mney,” Gheen says. Instead, the researchers tracked their cllared lins, and then gt dwn n hands and knees near the lins’ recent kills, using a range finder t measure the penness f the area. Areas with big-headed ants, the team shwed, had 2.67 times higher visibility than areas withut - meaning that lins culd see farther, but s culd their prey.
Over the three years f the study, zebra dinners decreased frm 67 percent t 42 percent f lin kills. But the lins didn’t g hungry. Instead, they went fr beef. Between the early fifteenth century and the early twentieth century, when the Nrthwest Passage was finally traversed entirely by sea, there were many theries regarding where such a rute might be. Sme believed there might be a cntinuus waterway acrss the American cntinent, between what is nw Califrnia in the west and the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway in the east. Others believed it wuld be far nrth, abve Alaska and the nrmally frzen Nrthern Canada. T lcate this fabled rute, expeditins set ut frm the eastern Atlantic and the western Pacific casts.
The earliest jurneys frm the eastern cast int the wilderness f Nrtheast Canada were undertaken by Greenland Vikings befre the thirteenth century. Further Jurneys f discvery were nt made in earnest until the fifteenth century, the first f which was led by Englishman Jhn Cabt in 1497, fllwed by three vyages starting frm 1576 led by Cabt’s fellw cuntryman, Martin Frbisher, after whm Frbisher Bay is named. In 1539, 60 years befre Frbisher’s epic jurneys, a Spaniard, Francisc de Ulla, explred Califrnia and his explits created the myth f a passage acrss the cntinent frm Califrnia. Further explratin frm Spain cntinued fr the next tw centuries. During this time, Russia became invlved in explratin further nrth, with Vitus Bering, a Dane wrking fr Russia, lcating and naming the Bering Strait, the waterway between Russia and Alaska.
The mst famus f the Western navigatrs was Englishman Captain James Ck, wh, in 1778, attempted t find the passage fr a prize f £20,000 ffered by the British Admiralty. Neither he nr ther navigatrs wh fllwed him, including cmpatrit Gerge Vancuver, discvered any sign f a river that wuld lead eastwards, rather, they were blcked by glaciers clse t the cast. Perhaps the mst impressive jurney was the ne that finally achieved success. In the search fr Franklin, Cmmander Rbert McClure’s expeditin engaged in a remarkable jurney between 1850 and 1854. His ship HMS Investigatr sailed first arund Cape Hrn and then, after heading nrth, fund a rute frm west t east thrugh the Bering Strait and acrss Nrthern Canada. During this time his ship was trapped in ice fr three winters and his crew, despite nearly dying f starvatin, cmpleted the jurney acrss the ice in sleds, befre being picked up by anther ship. Hwever, the Nrthwest Passage was nt traversed entirely by sea until 1906 when Rald Amundsen, the great plar explrer (wh was als the first t reach the Suth Ple), finally achieved this feat by taking the east-west rute. The first successful fully marine west-east crssing was cmpleted in 1942 by a Ryal Canadian Munted Plice crew in their plucky Arctic wrkhrse, the cnverted schner St Rch, which later made the return trip.
