I sld ne f my cars and switched t an e-bike ne year ag. I knew that I was ding smething gd fr the planet. But I still viewed giving up my car as smething reserved fr the deeply cmmitted and adventurus, smething that Greenpeace vlunteers did t make the wrld better. Hwever, I live in Clrad; e-bike wuld mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer. It was the right thing t d, I thught, but it was nt ging t be fun.
I was very wrng. Befre selling my car, I wrried mst abut riding in the cld winter mnths. But I quickly learned that, as the saying ges, there is n bad weather, nly bad clthes. I wear glves, warm scks and a ski jacket when I ride, and I am almst never t cld.
Thugh I, like many wuld-be cyclists, was wrried abut arriving at the ffice sweaty in htter mnths, the e-bike slved my prblem. Even when there was 35 degrees Celsius utside, I didn’t sweat, thanks t my bike’s pedal-assist mde (脚踏辅助模式). If I am hnest, smetimes I didn’t even pedal; I just switched t pedal-assist mde, sat back and enjyed my ride.
But biking t wrk wasn’t just nt unpleasant — it was entirely enjyable. One day, shrtly after selling ur car, I hpped n (跳上) my bike after a stressful day at wrk and rde hme dwn a street edged with changing fall leaves. I felt mre cnnected t the physical envirnment arund me than I had when I’d traveled the same rute surrunded by metal and glass. I have t say, this sensatin made me happier and healthier.
Of curse, e-bikes aren’t ging t replace every car n every trip. In a cuntry where uncntrlled stretching f suburbs and malls and unprtected bike paths are the nrm, it’s unrealistic t expect e-bikes t replace cars in the way that the Mdel T (福特公司第一款大规模生产的汽车) replaced hrses. But as an individual, making shrt trips n an e-bike wuld save mney, cut carbn ftprints, and imprve health and well-being.

Slar stills (蒸馏器) prvide a clever and simple means f cleaning dirty r salty water, but they wrk at a rather slw rate. A new material has been shwn t bst their perfrmance, and it's made frm fruit waste which wuld therwise be thrwn away.
In its mst basic frm, a cnventinal slar still cntains undrinkable water that is set beneath a cver. The water evaprates (蒸发) as it’s heated by the sun, cndensing (凝结) n the inside surface f the cver. That cndensatin — which is pure, clean water — drps dwn the cver and is cllected in a separate cntainer fr drinking.
In rder t warm the dirty salty water at a faster rate, scientists have develped materials that flat n its surface, turning sunlight int heat. And while thse materials have been made frm a number f different substances, they cmmnly use carbn btained frm cal. Seeking a less cstly and mre ec-friendly alternative, Prf. Edisn and clleagues at Singapre’s Nanyang Technlgical University lked t smething that des’t have t be mined and is free fr the taking — fruit waste. Mre specifically, the scientists tried ut ccnut peels, range peels and banana peels.
In the prcess, the fruit waste was heated at 850℃ fr a few hurs, and mixed with a kind f chemical substance. Ding s transfrmed the fruit waste int a new material which has a very high light-t-heat transfrming efficiency.
When tested, this new material prved t be very ptent at transfrming sunlight int heat then. And because the material is full f hles, the water steam is able t rise right thrugh it, then cndensing n the inside f the still's cver.
Prf. Edisn and his team fund material btained frm the ccnut peels wrked best, as it transfrmed sunlight t heat with an efficiency rate f 94%. They are nw develping the technlgy further, and are seeking industry partners t help with its cmmercializatin.
    28. What is the paragraph 2 mainly abut?
    A. The basic wrking principle f slar stills.

    B. T find ut mre ec-friendly materials.
    C. T expand the applied range f the slar still.
    D. T make slar stills much easier and less cstly.
    30. What des the underlined wrd “ptent” mean in paragraph 5?
    A. Cnvincing. B. Representative. C. Effective. D. Durable.
    31. What is the best title f the text?
    A. Transfrming sunlight int heat thrugh high-tech
    B. Turning fruit waste int water-cleaning material
    C. Slar stills are the best way t get drinking water
    D. New technlgy helps slar stills reach the custmers
    D
In a glbal reprt f lake clr, researchers estimate that rughly ne-third f Earth’s lakes are blue. But, shuld average summer air temperatures rise by a few degrees, sme f thse clear waters culd turn a cludy green r brwn, the Learn reprts in the Sept. 28 Gephysical Research Letters.
The changing clrs culd change hw peple use thse waters and ffer clues abut the stability f lake ecsystems. Cmpared with blue lakes, green r brwn lakes have mre algae (藻类) and rganic matter, says Xia Yang, a hydrlgist (水文专家) at Suthern Methdist University.
Lakes in places with average summer air temperatures that were belw 19° Celsius were mre likely t be blue than lakes with warmer summers. That’s because warmer water helps algae blm mre, which changes the prperties f the water.
Yang and clleagues used satellite phts frm 2013 t 2020 t analyze the clr f mre than 85,000 lakes arund the wrld. Because strms and seasns can temprarily affect a lake’s clr, the researchers fcused n the mst frequent clr bserved fr each lake ver the seven-year perid. The researchers als created an interactive nline map that can be used t explre the clrs f these lakes. The apprach is “super cl,” the researchers say. These satellite data are “just s pwerful.”
If sme lakes d becme less blue, peple will prbably lse sme f the resurces they have cme t value, O’Reilly says, wh is an eclgist at Illinis State University. Lakes are ften used fr drinking water, fd r recreatin. If the water has mre algae, it culd be unappealing fr play r mre cstly t clean fr drinking. But the clr changes wuldn’t necessarily mean that the lakes are any less healthy. “Humans dn’t value lts f algae in a lake, but if yu’re a certain type f fish species, yu might be like ‘this is great’ O’Reilly says.
    32. What can we learn abut the lakes’ clr change accrding t the text?
    A. It is caused by water pllutin.
    B. It des harm t the grwth f algae.
    C. It results frm the temperature increase.
    D. It can disturb the stability f lake ecsystems.
    33. Hw was the research cnducted?
    A. By ding field investigatin.
    B. By researching previus studies.
    C. By analyzing lng-term satellite data.
    D. By bserving the daily clr f the lakes.
    34. Which wrd best describes O’Reilly’s attitude t the clr change?
    A. Objective. B. Dubtful. C. Uncncerned.D. Favurable.
    35. What’s the authrs purpse in writing the text?
    A. T call n peple t prtect lakes.
    B. T intrduce a new research methd.
    C. T present the utcme f a research.
    D. T prvide slutins t lakes’ clr change.
