I knew that Eurpean cuntries did nt generally participate in tipping culture, but I didn’t understand hw that fundamentally altered the entire business interactin.
Whenever we finished eating, we wuld relax with the dishes that we were very bviusly dne with, chat fr a bit, and wait fr the bill. Wait, wait, and wait!
This happened at every restaurant we went t: After we were dne and ready t pay and leave, we wuld end up waiting twenty r thirty minutes t actually get the bill and pay. We abslutely culd nt figure it ut! The servers seemed t be s attentive t everyne else in the restaurants, the lcals, but fr the bvius grup f turists, we were just left t wait, wait, and wait! It was actually getting frustrating!
I finally figured it ut n the last day f ur trip, watching the lcals. When the lcals finished their meals, they wuld nt pay immediately. Instead, they wuld sit and chat, and just srt f… hang ut. They wuld pay when they were ready t leave, and n ne wuld hustle (催促) them ut f there. Because the servers weren’t wrking fr pennies and dependent n tips, they had n reasn t mve peple alng. Everyne was allwed t mve at their wn pace, pay when they were ready t pay, and leave when they were ready t leave. The servers wuld expect the custmers t apprach r signal them that they were dne, rather than checking every few minutes t get things mving. What a nvel experience! I wish we had figured it ut sner.

Brazil’s Burn Supprt Institute and the Federal University f Ceará, which started the Tilapia Skin Prject t treat burns, supprted her wrk. With their help, Mel develped a special membrane (膜) called the acellular dermal matrix (ADM), made frm pure cllagen taken frm tilapia skin.
Cllagen is knwn t help cells grw and repair tissues. Tilapia skin has a high and cnsistent quality f cllagen thrughut the fish’s life, while the quality f hrse placental cllagen can vary depending n the hrse’s age and weight.
S far, Mel has treated ver 400 dgs using tilapia skin. The dgs shwed n pain r infectin after surgery and healed quickly with minimal scarring.
