Kurtz funded Pure Harvest Smart Farms in 2017 with his c-funders Mahmud Adi and Rbert Kupstas. The funders’ research and technlgical innvatin led t the develpment f a prprietary (专营的) Cntrlled-Envirnment Agriculture (CEA) system-a cmbinatin f high-tech greenhuses and vertical farms that prvides a stable year-rund climate. The first crp f tmates was planted in August 2018 and harvested in Octber. The cmpany’s riginal farm is nw its Research & Develpment (R&D) facility, and Pure Harvest has expanded its facilities in the UAE t 16 hectares f grwing area. It nw prduces 14 types f leafy greens; tw varieties f strawberries, with seven mre being develped; and almst 30 varieties f tmates. With limited availability f lcal, seasnal prduce, the UAE has typically imprted much f its fd, ften by air, which cmes at a high cst, bth ecnmically and envirnmentally. And while they are mre expensive cmpared with lcally grwn seasnal prduce, cmpany says its fruit and vegetables are typically up t 60% cheaper than prducts imprted by air f cmparable quality.
Their visin fits in with a wider gal fr Dubai t becme mre self-sufficient, and they have a desire t use their R&D t help deal with the impacts that climate change is already having n the fd industry in the Gulf regin and beynd. Kurtz hpes the cmpany’s data-driven technlgy can becme a mdel fr ther regins that are experiencing climate difficulty.
8.Why did Kurtz fund Pure Harvest Smart Farms?
A.T use the challenging regin.B.T save water during farming.

A blind fish living in the deep darkness f a Mexican cave system still maintains sme ability t sense light. As the cavefish n lnger seem t rely n an internal daily cycle and sme sleep very little, bilgist Inga Steindal and her team were keen t see if their bdies can still regulate cyclically thrugh time. Mst animals n Earth have a circadian rhythm-an internal clck influenced by light levels-that helps crdinate behavirs like hunger with ur planet’s day and night cycles.
The Mexican blind cavefish live in a cmplex f ver 30 islated caves, within which they have each independently adapted t the dark. Their bdies are extra sensitive t vibratins, allwing them t sense changes in water currents fr navigatin in cmpensatin fr their limited r cmplete lack f sight. This adaptatin ccurred despite the fish frm each cave evlving frm the same species with fully functining eyes. This ancestral grup still lives in the surface waters in the El Albra regin f Mexic and parts f the Suthwestern US.
Steindal’s team tk tissue samples frm blind cavefish, frm three islated caves, and their surface relatives and tested the cells in different cnditins. They detected that even cavefish cells, thugh less respnsive than surface fish cells, activated several mlecular (分子的) clck mechanisms (机制) when expsed t light. “Nn-visual light detectin is maintained at a fundamental cell-based level,” the researchers explained. While there were sme similarities between the fish frm the different caves cmpared t their surface relatives, differences in the bilgical clck mechanisms amng fish frm different caves further cnfirm that each grup independently evlved its adaptatins.
“We have prvided prf that despite being blind, cells frm the Mexican blind cavefish can detect light and make their clcks fit in with a light/dark cycle,” Steindal cncluded. The team hpes these findings will prvide insights int the circadian rhythm and ffer a mdel fr studying animal adaptatins t dark envirnments.
12.What did Steindal and her clleagues want t find ut?
    A.Whether the cavefish need sleep.
B.Whether the cavefish can sense light.
C.Whether the cavefish have a circadian rhythm
D.Whether the cavefish depend n an internal daily cycle.
13.Hw d Mexican blind cavefish adapt t living in darkness?
A.By increasing their sleep cycles.B.By relying n surface fish fr navigatin.
C.By develping extra sensitivity t vibratins.D.By emplying their circadian rhythms t find fd.
14.Which f the fllwing is NOT a feature f Mexican blind cavefish?
A.Extra sensitivity t vibratins in water currents.
B.A cmplete lss f their mlecular clck mechanisms.
    C.Limited r n visin due t their dark envirnment.
D.Adaptatins that evlved independently in different caves.
15.What can be the best title fr the text?
A.Light Detectin in Blind CavefishB.Evlutin f Vibratinal Sensitivity

They fund that habitual nappers were less likely t have cgnitive impairments (损害) than thse wh didn’t. 19 But nap length may play a rle here. A similar study shwed that thse wh usually napped fr 30-90 minutes had better verall cgnitin cmpared t thse wh napped fr lnger r shrter, r wh didn’t nap at all.
20 . It’s pssible that napping helps the brain clean up sleep-inducing waste prducts that wuld therwise slw dwn brain activity, and that they refuel the brain’s energy stres. Shrt naps may als help imprve yur attentin by letting particularly sleepy areas f the brain recver, thereby preventing instability in the brain’s netwrks.

One miserable rainy day, ne f my regulars came in, lking depressed and defeated. When I asked if I culd help, he just said he felt like crawling int bed and staying there fr a few years. I knew exactly hw he felt.

The next day was miserable as well, rain spilling frm the sky. The drive-thru was busier than ever. I spent hurs passing rders thrugh the windw, drenched (湿透) frm the rain while custmers stayed czy in their temperature-cntrlled cars. N ne seemed t ntice hw hard I was wrking.
