Landscape paintings f the 19th century displayed in Lndn’s Tate Britain museum lked rather familiar t Anna Lea Albright, a climate researcher. Artist William Turner’s unique way f painting bjects in fggy weather let Albright recall her early research n air pllutin.
“I started wndering if there was a cnnectin,” says Albright, wh visited the museum n a day ff frm wrk. Turner — an English Rmantic painter — was painting as increasing industrial plants earned Lndn the name “The Big Smke”. Turner’s early wrks were dne with sharp details while later wrks had a dreamier aesthetic (美感).
T figure ut t what extent Impressinists were reflecting the envirnmental cnditins f that time, Albright partnered with climatlgist Peter Huybers. They analyzed the cntrast f 60 wrks created by Turner frm 1796 t 1850 and 38 paintings by Mnet between 1864 and 1901. It turned ut that as the release f sulfur dixide (二氧化硫) increased ver time, the amunt f cntrast in bth Turner’s and Mnet’s paintings decreased. Hwever, wrks set in Paris by Mnet between 1864 and 1872 shwed relatively higher cntrast cmpared with Turner’s Lndn-based wrks created 20 years earlier. This, Albright and Huybers say, can be due t the much slwer start f the Industrial Revlutin in France.
The researchers als analyzed the paintings’ visibility, r the distance at which an bject can be clearly seen. Befre 1830, the visibility in Turner’s paintings averaged abut 25 kilmeters while paintings after 1830 had the average visibility f abut 10 kilmeters. T strengthen their argument, the researchers als analyzed 18 paintings frm fur ther Lndn-and Paris-based Impressinists. Again, as utdr air pllutin increased, the cntrast and visibility in the paintings decreased.
The researchers calculate that air pllutin can explain abut 61 percent f cntrast differences between the paintings. In that respect, “different painters will paint in a similar way when the envirnment is similar,” Albright says. “But I dn’t want t verstep the line and say: Oh, we can explain all f Impressinism.”
    8. Why is Albright’s visit t a museum mentined?
    A. T cnnect art with research.B. T intrduce previus fggy weather.
    C. T shw impacts f Turner’s painting.D. T explain inspiratin fr her new study.
    9. What might lead t lwer cntrast in Turner’s paintings accrding t the research?
    A. His persnal habits.B. His drawing techniques.
    C. The higher level f industrializatin.D. The influence f Impressinists.
    10. What des the paintings’ visibility mainly indicate?
    A. Painting styles vary with time and regins.B. Air pllutin needs t be cntrlled.
    C. Lwer visibility is mre ppular in wrks.D. Changes in it may relate t air quality.
    11. Which wrd can best describe Albright’s attitude twards the findings?
    A. Objective.B. Optimistic.C. Enthusiastic.D. Dubtful.
D 9. C 10. D 11. A
根据第一段最后一句“Artist William Turner’s unique way f painting bjects in fggy weather let Albright recall her early research n air pllutin.(艺术家William Turner在雾天里作画的独特方式让Albright回忆起她早期对空气污染的研究)”和第二段中的““I started wndering if there was a cnnectin,” says Albright, wh visited the museum n a day ff frm wrk.(‘我开始怀疑这两者之间是否有联系,’Albright说,她在休假的一天参观了博物馆)”可知,Albright在参观博物馆时,William Turner对雾中的事物的表现方式使她受到启发,因此她打算研究绘画风格的变化是否与空气污染有关。
根据第三段中的“They analyzed the cntrast f 60 wrks created by Turner frm 1796 t 1850 and 38 paintings by Mnet between 1864 and 1901. This, Albright and Huybers say, can be due t the much slwer start f the Industrial Revlutin in France.(他们分析了Turner在1796年至1850年间创作的60幅作品和Mnet在1864年至1901年间创作的38幅作品的对比。
根据第四段“The researchers als analyzed the paintings’ visibility, r the distance at which an bject can be clearly seen. Again, as utdr air pllutin increased, the cntrast and visibility in the paintings decreased.(研究人员还分析了画作的可见性,即物体清晰可见的距离。
根据最后一段的“The researchers calculate that air pllutin can explain abut 61 percent f cntrast differences between the paintings.(研究人员计算出,空气污染可以解释大约61%的画作之间的对比差异)”及“But I dn’t want t verstep the line and say: Oh, we can explain all f Impressinism.(但我不想越界说:哦,我们可以解释所有印象派)”可知,研究人员推测,空气污染可以解释大约61%的画作之间的对比度差异。 故选A。
    D
Hw has artificial intelligence (AI) changed and shaped ur wrld ver the last five years? Hw will AI cntinue t impact ur lives in the cming years? Thse are the questins addressed in my reprt.
When it cmes t the current state f AI, I must say sme f the biggest changes in the last five years have been hw well AI perfrms in large data systems n specific types f tasks. We’ve seen Alpha Zer becme the best G player entirely thrugh self-play, and everyday use f AI such as grammar checks and aut cmplete, autmatic persnal pht rganizatin, and speech recgnitin becme cmmnplace fr large numbers f peple.

It can help with decisin-making such as identifying the likely treatment ptins fr patients and prvide basic assistance such as text-t-speech transfrmatin fr the visually damaged. In many situatins, peple and AI are cmplementary; that’s why I assume there is a pssibility f teaming peple with AI.
In the past, peple had a fairly rsy utlk n AI, but nw the public have a much mre mixed view. This cmes frm the fact we are much less willing t tlerate faults, especially discriminatry nes. There have als been questins f infrmatin and disinfrmatin cntrl as peple get their news and entertainment by searches and rankings persnalized t their needs. S, there’s a much greater recgnitin that we shuld nt be waiting fr AI tls t becme mainstream befre making sure they are mrally crrect.
The need t understand the basics f AI and data science starts much earlier than cllege educatin, as children are being expsed t AI as sn as they click n nline vides. But fr cmputer science students in cllege, I think a key thing that future engineers need t realize is when t demand input and hw t talk acrss subject bundaries t get at ften difficult-t-quantify ideas f safety, equity, and s frth.
    12. Why des the authr talk abut AI’s perfrmance n sme tasks in paragraph 2?

    C. The high expectatins.D. The persnalized news.
    15. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Strengths and Faults f AIB. The Present and Future f AI
    C. AI: Hw t Further Develp?D. Humans vs AI: Wh’s Better?
B 13. C 14. A 15. B
