In 2011, Amy Chua put out the book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, which is her memoir(回忆录)about the challenges of being a parent and trying to keep to the strict upbringing(养)she knew as a child. Controversy over the book arose because many readers did not get the impression that Chua was trying to be humorous about her parenting methods. There was also miscommunication about the purpose of the book. Many received it as a guide for other parents on how to use strict methods to punish and motivate their children. However, Chua has always claimed the aim of her book was only to share her successes and failures as a parent in a culturally diverse world.

In the book, Chua compares Western and Chinese beliefs and methods of parenting. In general, Chinese parents believe a child's academic success is directly linked to parenting skills. It is common for such parents to take severe measures to make their children do exactly what they say. In contrast, Western parents worry more about their children's self-esteem(自尊),which drives their parenting methods. As a result, parenting methods have become less strict and children are not held to the high standards they were in the past.

Interestingly, in the West, many people agree that Western parenting methods could use improvement. Some even say that the laid-back Western methods can be just as damaging as the overly strict ones Chua connects with Chinese culture because more and more children are not learning how to face and overcome challenges. However, experts also say that being too strict with children can cause rebellion(反叛), low self-esteem and poor parent-child relationships.

What everyone can agree on is that there is no perfect way to parent. What's more a method that works with one child will not necessarily work with another. Parents are challenged with finding the best method that helps each child learn to be a responsible and confident person.

    24. Why did Amy Chua write the book? ______

    A. To share her experience as a mom.

    B. To tell interesting stories to children.

    C. To introduce her research on parenting.

    D. To help other parents educate their children.

    25. What's the maid idea of Paragraph 2? ______

    A. What is most important for children.

    B. How to help children to succeed in school.

    C. The importance of mastering parenting skills.

    D. Differences between upbringing in China and the West.

    26. What result might the Western parenting method bring about? ______

    A. Children's academic success.

    B. More positive attitudes toward life.

    C. Bad relationships between parents and children.

    D. Children's lack of experience in dealing with difficulties.

    27. Which of the following may the author agree on? ______

    A. One parenting method doesn't work with all children.

    B. A perfect way to parent is easy to find as long as parents work hard.

    C. Western parenting methods are better than those in China.

    D. Chinese parents are more worried about their children's self-esteem.

What exactly is intelligence? There aren’t any easy answers. Despite the progress that has been made in genetics and psychology, human intelligence has remained one of the most controversial areas of modern science, until now, that is, for the discovery of a gene(基因) linked to intelligence has made the experts think again.

Robert Plomin of the Institute of Psychiatry in London and his colleagues in the US have been looking into genetic make-up. From their research, they have discovered that a slightly different gene is more common in those with a high IQ. Plomin analyzed DNA from two groups of 51 children aged between 6 and 15. What he found was that the first group had an IQ of 136, putting them in the top 5% of the population, while the other group had an average IQ of 103. An analysis of their genes showed that 32% of children in the higher group had the gene in question, while only 16% in the second group did.

However, there is a lot more research to be done, and Plomin himself is cautious at this early stage. He suggests that there are probably many genes that contribute to intelligence, rather than just one.

Several studies have shown a strong link between IQ and career success, although some psychologists remain unconvinced about this. Professor Michael Rowe, who has written a book called Genius Explained, is one of these. “The people with the highest IQs are not usually the ones who do best in their careers.”

Many psychologists now believe that when it comes to intelligence, IQ isn’t everything. Many alternative views have been put forward recently. One example is the idea of multiple intelligences, which was developed in the 1980s by Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner. This offers a much broader view than the IQ theory, including creativity and communication skills as relevant factors(因素) in intelligence.

Tony Buzan, brain expert and author of Master your Memory, is enthusiastic about this belief, arguing that true geniuses(天才) do indeed appear to combine high levels of each type of intelligence. He lists Alexander the Great, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein as examples. At the same time, Buzan believes that everyone can develop their intelligence, only if they take the trouble to exercise their brain. Perhaps there’s hope for us all!

Some of the most powerful companies in the world have co-founders, for example, Google (Sergey Brin and Larry Page), Apple (Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs), and Microsoft (Bill Gates and Paul Allen) and so on. Having partners can help to deal with the pressure and the failures that come with running a business. No matter how down on your luck you feel they may provide emotional support. They may have extra skills, and be on hand to help out with the day-to-day problems. And an alternate point of view may help to broaden your mind and aid the risk of mistakes being overlooked.

Everybody knows Samsung's Galaxy Note 7.When the phone was launched in 2016, customers praised it for its storage, design and usability, and it may well have been a hit if it weren't for the fact that it occasionally caught fire and exploded. It was soon banned immediately from flights, and Samsung had no choice but to recall the entire model. The shortcoming reportedly cost the company 1 billion, and a further 17 billion in lost sales. But remember, based on the lesson, the Galaxy Note 8 and the Galaxy Note 9 are well received in the world! Now we know that failing is part of business success.

One thing that all great companies have in common is that they have failed many times-and luckily, they bounced back. Take Sarah Blakely, founder of shapewear brand Spanx for example. She credits her business success specifically to her failures. "I'd get kicked out of buildings all day long," she remembered." People would tear up my business card in my face. But my friends and I knew I could sell and I knew I wanted to sell something I had created. I learned that ‘no' doesn't always mean ‘no', and that you may get 30 nos before you get the one yes. People told me no with Spanx for two years." Spanx is worth just over $1 billion-it was a company that Blakely who took a degree in a law school started with just $5 000!

    32. What can we learn from the examples in Paragraph 1? ______

    A. Two heads are better than one.

    B. Constant dropping wears the stone.

    C. God helps those who help themselves.

    D. All things are difficult before they are easy.

    33. Why does the author mention Samsung's Galaxy Note 7,8 and 9? ______

    A. To suggest customers should follow the new trends.

    B. To prove Samsung is responsible for customers.

    C. To show Samsung paid for its product failure.

    D. To explain that failures don't spell the end.

    34. What mainly contributed to Sarah Blakely's success? ______

    A. Her friends'help. B. Her will power.

    C. Her good luck. D. Her education background.

    35. How does the author develop the passage? ______

    A. By making contrast.  B. By making classification.

    C. By giving examples.  D. By giving numbers.

You're growing up. That means you're probably experiencing lots of changes, all at once. Your body is changing. It might even seem as if your entire self is changing. It can be confusing and even scary.   __(36)__ And it's good!

Growing up means that you can do more, learn more, and start to make your mark on the world. In order for that to happen, your body produces chemicals called hormones that help both body and mind grow. Because of the way your brain develops, it is somewhat ruled by emotion now and through your teen years. As a result, growing up can seem like an emotional roller coaster! __(38)__

Take care of yourself. If you eat right, sleep enough, and get good exercise, your brain will be much more able to deal with the stress.

__(39)__ When you feel your moods swinging or you're upset, or confused, some quiet time will allow you to gather your thoughts and get calmer.

Practice relaxing your body and deep breathing when you wake up and when you go to bed. __(40)__  Plus, when stuff happens during the day, you'll be able to calm yourself quickly with a deep breath or two before you react. Your body is changing.

    A. Take a time-out.

    B. But the truth is, it happens to every teen.

    C. Work out regularly to keep physically fit.

    D. This changing is needed for your body's development.

    Dear Brown,

I am very delighted to receive your letter, asking about whether we have Internet Assisted Teaching.【高分句型一】 Now, I'd like to share with you some detailed information about it.(点明主题)

Actually, we do have a specially designed website called Smartpage for both teachers and students. Teachers are able to do some office work on it, including assigning homework, and carrying out tests while students have free and easy access to the digital resources of the library, which seems very convenient and beneficial to their academic work.(介绍本校的网络教学)

By taking full advantage of it myself, I have been making great progress in my studies, especially in English and Chinese, which brings me a lot of hope and confidence.【高分句型二】 I really hope more teachers and students can make full use of Smartpage to improve their work and studies.(自己的体验和感受)

     Yours,

    Li Jin

    听力材料

    Text 1

M: Excuse me. I’d like to buy some flowers for my friend.

W: Let me see, these fresh roses are very nice.

    Text 2

M: Hi, Maria. What are you up to?

W: Not much. I’m just reading a magazine.

M: Uh huh… Can I turn on the radio?

    W: Sure, go ahead.

    Text 3

W: I took the wrong bus again! I wasted all afternoon trying to get back to school. Why did they cancel the No 15 Bus?

M: The new bus schedule is confusing at first. But why didn’t you call me to ride you back? Or just took a taxi?

    Text 4

W: You’ll never guess what my mother did! She took my cellphone.

M: Why would she do a thing like that?

W: She said she wanted to teach me a lesson. I always complain wasting too much time on the net. But I never did a thing about it.

    Text 5

W: My housemate is really messy. She always leaves a mess and won’t do any housework.

M: You’d better point it out to her or just learn to live with it.

    Text 6

M: Why are you late, Alice?

W: Sorry, Mr. Harrison. I missed my train.

    M: How come?

W: Because I left home a little late.

M: Did you get up late or something?

W: No. My aunt called me at the last minute.

M: Tell her not to call you in the morning.

W: I will, Mr. Harrison. I’m really sorry for being late.

M: If you are late again, I can’t let you pass this class.

    W: Oh, please.

    Text 7

M: Hi, Linda, would you like to get away from the city and come to Lake Benjamin with my family next week?

W: I’d love to. Do I need anything?

M: Well, the first thing is a sleeping bag and a tent.

W: I don’t get it. What do I need them for?

M: For sleeping in, of course.

W: Do you mean this is a camping trip?

M: That’s right. So you need an extra set of warm clothes.

W: Why do I need those? It’s the middle of summer.

M: Just in case it rains or suddenly turns cold.

    W: Good thinking.

    Text 8

M: And do you find it hard to make your housekeeping money go around?

W: Yeah, you’re absolutely right. I’m losing ground all the time because the prices go up and up and up. It’s beyond reason.

M: Mmm. What do you think has gone up most lately?

    W: Well, meat of course.

    M: Mmm. What about fish?

W: Fish is just as dear or perhaps even dearer than meat. And we have to buy sausages and eggs. Eggs are a little bit cheaper because of the time of the year, but bacon is very dear.

M: What about things like butter and cheese?

W: Cheese is very dear indeed. Butter and tea have come down a little. We’d rather not buy instant coffee which doesn’t agree with most of us. I used to buy ordinary coffee, but now it’s so expensive.

    Text 9

W: Could you give me something for the pain? I didn’t get to sleep until three o’clock this morning.

M: Aspirin is the strongest medicine I can give you without a prescription.

W: That isn’t strong enough, and I don’t have an appointment with my dentist until next week.

    M: Who is your dentist?

    W: Dr. Williams.

M: Doesn’t he have his office on the corner?

    W: Yes, he does.

M: Are you a regular patient?

    W: Yes.

M: Oh. Then I can call him if you like. Dr. Williams will give me a pain prescription over the phone.

W: I’d appreciate that very much. Do you think that he’ll still be in his office?

M: Sure. It’s only four-thirty. He should be there until five.

    W: Good.

M: Too bad you can’t get an appointment sooner.

W: I know. Dr. Williams is always booked up though.

M: In the meantime, be careful not to eat or drink anything too hot or too cold.

W: I really don’t feel like eating or drinking anything at all.

M: Well, I’ll give Dr. Williams a call and we’ll see what we can do for you.

    Text 10

It is really difficult for American university students to develop good health habits, but many students do manage to live a very healthy lifestyle.

Most schools offer plenty of opportunity for exercise through organized teams or classes in yoga, soccer, volleyball and other fitness activities, or by providing recreation centers where students can exercise, swim, work out or play different sports.

Finding healthy food to eat in the schools can be more of a challenge. However, as American society becomes more educated and concerned about health problems, even some fast food restaurants offer healthy alternatives such as salads, soups and low-fat sandwiches.

There are strict restrictions on smoking in most schools too. In addition, schools usually include a student health center where students can seek medical attention. This is really a bonus for the students, because a simple doctor’s appointment can cost a hundred dollars, and a short hospital stay will cost thousands.
