Wyatt Fuss was born with spinal cord (脊髓) tumors which push against his spinal cord in an area that affects breathing and swallowing. For now, the tumors are lying inactive, but if they begin to grow unchecked as they have in the past, they could truly choke him to death. The tumors apply pressure on his spinal cord, leaving Wyatt with significantly decreasing feeling in his arms and hands; simple tasks like putting on gloves is impossible without help. He isn’t aware of pain from an injury. Wyatt is an independent young man who would rather not ask for helping doing tasks like these that most people take for granted. Nine-year-old Wyatt exemplifies (例证) how disabilities can occur at any age.
There is no cure at this time for Wyatt’s condition and in fact, little or no research has been done on the disease. Families of children with spinal cord tumors have been raising funds to hire a researcher through Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. A researcher was hired in 2015 to struggle with the disease, but years of research lie ahead, while families wait, and worry. Of the six families involved in the project, any cure as a result of the research will come too late for three of the children.
The Fuss family started their own fundraising event—Pullin’s for Kids—and it has contributed nearly $100,000 to the effort in the event’s seven-year history. “We had to do something.”Wyatt’s mother, Jen said. “We couldn’t just sit around and cry.” “Sometimes it is overwhelming. There are therapy and doctor appointments. It’s hard to keep a job sometimes which is something that I want to do.” Jen is employed at the Clarksville Feed Store. Wyatt loves hunting and the outdoors. His dream is to become a DNR officer and own a small farm on the side.
24. What do we know about Wyatt Fuss?
A. He doesn’t realize pain from an injury.
B. He is a very energetic and independent boy.
C. He was nearly choked to death for many times.
D. His tumors have always been inactive.

A. He was nine years old.
B. He was seven years old.
C. He was about two years old.
D. He was younger than one.
26. What can we infer from Wyatt’s mother words?
A. She often cried for her son’s studies.
B. Wyatt’s disease left his parents out of work.
C. She was always tired and disappointed.
D. It may cost her job to deal with Wyatt’s disease.
27. What’s the purpose of the writer writing this text?
A. To warn people against spinal cord tumors.
B. To call on us to pay more attention to health.
C. To praise Wyatt Fuss and his mother’s bravery.
D. To introduce a boy’s disease and two fundraising events.

Petrol and diesel cars may still dominate(影响) our roads, but their days are numbered. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 per cent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 per cent by 2020.
One hurdle to the widespread adoption of electric cars has been “range anxiety”—drivers’ concerns about running out of juice on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. In fact, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.
Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed quite considerably over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars met with distrust, and their high price tags drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars is starting to persuade critics. Plug-in cars will soon give internal combustion engine models a run for their money.
As well as advancements on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the sea and sky. Electric boats are among the oldest electric vehicles, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric planes are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery-powered planes. The experiments could soon make commercial electric flight a reality.
Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions. Were the US to act on the study’s findings and replace 87 percent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 per cent. However, because of the production processes and the generation of electricity required to charge these vehicles, they cannot claim to be completely emission-free. Even so, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.
28. The underlined word “hurdle” in Paragraph 2 means ________.
A. aim B. barrier C. consequence D. step
29. In the past, why did many people refuse to buy the electric cars according to the passage?
A. They were very poorly made. B. They were not good value.
C. They were not widely promoted D. They couldn’t travel at a high speed.
30. What is the function of Paragraph 4?
A. To introduce the history of electric vehicles.
B. To show why more people have interest in electric cars.
C. To describe different ways electric vehicles can be used.
D. To explain why the world needs more electric cars.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?
A. Driving into the Future B. History of Electric Cars
C. My Dream Car D. Problems with Petrol Cars

The Broadcom MASTERS competition aims to find a balance between celebrating individual accomplishments and acknowledging that science seldom happens alone. The competition takes off when students from around the country are teamed up and have to solve a series of hands—on challenges in the spotlight.
Nowadays, kids are fed with “the myth of the lone scientist”, so placing such challenges in the middle school period has a huge potential for impact. The focus on teambuilding skills gets students excited before more fears and stereotypes(成见)set in.
The initial pool of qualified students comes from the participants in nation-wide science fairs. Those who score in the top 10% (about 10,000 kids) have the qualification to apply. The judges select the top 300 young scientists, and that group is finally narrowed to 30 finalists.
Selection at this stage is clearly an honor in itself, but it counts as step one for the finalists. They are then flown to Washington,D.C. and placed into teams of five for the hands-on part of the competition. Each team is made up of students with different talents and skills, including academic focus and experience.
Unlike the science fairs, where most of the work takes place behind the scenes and students share a polished outcome, the hands-on challenges create a space where the work is the competition itself. The students take up a range of challenges in science, technology, engineering, math and so on. Each of the challenges will need the insight and skills of multiple team members.
Judges observing the challenges aren’t just looking for outcomes but also for leadership, teamwork and problem solving.
The Broadcom MASTERS attracts increasing numbers of passionate and talented young people who are eager to take part in a program that helps them grow as scientists, engineers and inventors. It lets the students experience a sense of coming together with true peers. More importantly,it provides them with new skills to tackle future challenges.
32. What does the Broadcom MASTERS competition mainly focus on?
A. Team work..
B. Hands-on challenges.
C. Academic performance.
D. Individual accomplishments
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. The judges are too strict with the participants.
B. The nation-wide science fairs are well organized.
C. A large number of kids take part in the science fairs.
D. It’s not easy to be qualified as a member of the finalists.
34. What can we infer from the text?
A. Middle school students prefer to challenge each other.
B. Students can learn more new skills from the Broadcom MASTERS.
C. The Broadcom MASTERS competition has an increasing impact.
D. The science fairs will be completely replaced by the Broadcom MASTERS.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Learning to Take on Scientific Challenges
B. Outstanding Students are Publicly Honored
C. Bringing Individual Potential to a Team Opportunity
D. The Science Fair: A Platform Where Students’ Dreams Take off
