This is BBC special English program. Today we are going to introduce a money saved product to you.

A British company has made a new product to help us save money. The product is a wristband that gives us an electric shock if we spend too much money. The wristband is called Pavlok. It is linked to our bank account. It knows how much money we have in the bank. If we go shopping and there is not enough money in our bank account, the wristband makes an electric shock to our wrist. This warns us not to overspend. The company is called Intelligent Environment. It wants to work with banks to help customers with their money. So far, no banks in Britain have said they would ask their customers to wear Pavlok. They could start doing this in the future.

The Pavlok wristband is part of the Internet of Things. This is the idea that everything in our life will be connected to the Internet. The CEO of Intelligent Environment, David Webber, said people liked the idea of the Pavlok. Shoppers would rather get a small electric shock in the store from the wristband than get a big shock later when they see their bank account. Mr. Webber said the Pavlok would greatly benefit the people who cannot stop spending because they have no power or their power is weak. He added that many young people have the ostrich effect. This is when people put their heads in the sand and buy things rather than look at how much money they have in their bank.

    21. The company made the product to help itself ________.

    A. benefit customers  B. make money

    C. save money  D. offer help

    22. Mr. Webber thinks the wristband is ________.

    A. cheap B. helpless C. great D. a big surprise

    23. You can read this passage in a ________.

    A. travel guide  B. health magazine

    C. medical journal  D. science magazine

People become quite illogical when they try to decide what can be eaten and what cannot be eaten. If you lived in the Mediterranean, for instance, you would consider octopus (章鱼) a great delicacy (佳肴). You would not be able to understand why some people find it repulsive. On the other hand, your stomach would turn at the idea of frying potatoes in animal fat --the normally accepted practice in many northern countries. The sad truth is that most of us have been brought up to eat certain foods and we stick to them all our lives.

No creature has received more praise and abuse than the common garden snail (蜗牛). Cooked in wine, snails are a great luxury in various parts of the world. There are countless people who, ever since their early years, have learned to associate snails with food. My friend, Robert, lives in a country where snails are not liked. As his flat is in a large town, he has no garden of his own. For years he has been asking me to collect snails from my garden and take them to him.

The idea never appealed to me very much, but one day, after heavy shower, I happened to be walking in my garden when I noticed a huge number of snails taking a walk on some of my prized plants. Acting on a sudden impulse (冲动), I collected several dozens, put them in a paper bag, and took them to Robert. Robert was delighted to see me and equally pleased with my little gift. I left the bag in the hall and Robert and I went into the living room where we talked for a couple of hours. 1 had forgotten all about the snails when Robert suddenly said that I must stay to dinner. Snails would, of course, be the main dish. I did not fancy the idea and I reluctantly (不情愿地) followed Robert out of the room. To our surprise, we saw that there were snails everywhere: they had escaped from the paper bag and had taken complete possession of the hall! I have never been able to look at a snail since then.

    28. The underlined word repulsive in Paragraph 1 most probably means ________.

     A. acceptable B. disgusting C. delicious D. pleasant

    29. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that when collecting the snails, the author ________.

    A. was excited about being able to give his friend a surprise

    B. was glad that he could share them with his friend

    C. was depressed because it was hard to catch them all

    D. was angry because they might damage his beloved plants

    30. The author finds that snails ________.

    A. are the most controversial (有争议的) food B. are disliked in his hometown

     C. are as delicious as octopus D. are as popular as fried potatoes

31.The best title for the passage might be ________.

    A. People Are Illogical in Front of Delicacies

    B. Foods and Cultures

    C. Snail and Octopus

    D. One Mans Meat is Another Mans Poison

    D

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants (被告). But in the executive (主管的) circle, beauty can become a liability.

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.

Handsome male executives were considered having more honesty than plainer (不漂亮的) men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.

Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.

All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight successes.

Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine (女性的) and has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly" qualifies required.

This is true even in politics, "When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently, " says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates (候选人). She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.

The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

32.The word "liability" most probably means ________.

     A. trouble B. advantage C. misfortune D. disadvantage

    33. Bowman's experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness ________.

    A. is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women

    B. turns out to be a disadvantage to men

    C. has as little effect on men as on women

    D. affects men and women alike

    34. It can be inferred from the passage that people's views on beauty are often ________.

    A. old – fashioned B. objective C. supportive D. subjective

    35. The author writes this passage to ________.

    A. state the importance of appearance

    B. give advice to job - seekers who are attractive

    C. stress the impact of appearance on both sexes

    D. demand equal rights for women

    第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项 中有构项为多余选项

To get along with people can be tough. The following are some suggestions that can help you in some way.

Accept human nature. Humans make mistakes. People aren't always nice. They also have all of the problems that you have in your life.   36   This is important to remember when you're trying to get along with people who are very difficult or seem to be ignoring you; everyone is just doing the best that they can.

__37   People are all very different: that's what makes life interesting. And just like people are all different the world is also very complex.

Every situation is different, always. Just because someone doesn't make the choice that you would make or just because they take a less efficient or smart path to get where they're going doesn't make them wrong.

Practice forgiveness. Forgive people when they do make mistakes. Sometimes you just have to stop and give people the benefit of the doubt (to believe someone even though you are not sure whether what the person is saying is true). They might really be sorry or they might really not know that what they did was bad.   38

Keep an open mind. Sometimes you have to give people the benefit of the doubt.   39   For example, when people invite you to parties, really consider going instead of just brushing the invitation aside because you don't think they're serious.

Do something together.   40   You can work together on a project for school or work. You can also try a new activity together. These activities will give you more to talk about and lots of chances to interact and get to know each other.

    A. Think about what your words really say.

    B. Respect that there are lots of valid choices.

    C. Everyone is dealing with their own set of problems.

    D. Doing things together is a great way to bond with people and make friends.

    E. You have to forgive them so that you can move on to happier feelings.

    F. You might think that they hate you but they might be honestly trying to be nice to you.

    G. Even when someone’s making you mad, thank them for their effort to help or their suggestions.
