Whether you relax yourself with a glass of wine, bury yourself in a novel or carry on a conversation with the person seated next to you on a plane can be determined by which nationality is listed on your passport, a survey has claimed.
According to the results of an international passenger survey, Australians are the biggest boozers (酒鬼) on board with 36 per cent choosing to down the hatch (机舱门), compared to 35 per cent of Americans and 33 per cent of Brits.
The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) spoke to around 1,500 people, ages 18 and older, who have travelled by plane at least once during the last three months and were living in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China, Singapore, Australia or Brazil.
The results found Chinese travelers are most likely to nod off (打瞌睡) once the seatbelt sign switches off. They are also the first to reach for their credit card for some in-flight shopping and the biggest fans of gaming.
Americans on the other hand like to use their time in the air more productively — when not drinking — choosing to work while flying at 35,000 feet. Meanwhile, Brits and Germans are the best at having a chat with random strangers — spending 50 per cent more time than any other nationalities in schmoozing (闲聊).
By contrast, Brazilians conduct their conversations online by means of email, messaging apps or social media. In spite of plane food having a bad reputation, seven out of ten passengers said they were happy to chew down on the selection of in-flight snacks and meals. In-flight magazines were also popular with four out of five passengers claiming to read them.
The international flyers, who travelled on eight major airlines, however, did express their desire for better in-flight entertainment and 36 per cent wanted improved connectivity (连通性). “The industry has greatly improved the comfort, atmosphere, connectivity and entertainment onboard aircraft, and this data shows that passengers are accepting those improvements,” said Russell Lemieux, APEX executive director.
24. According to the passage, which one of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Passengers from Britain like to drink alcohol aboard much more than Americans.
B. Americans are used to spending all their time in working on the plane.
C. In-flight food is so delicious that most of passengers prefer to have it.
D. Generally most passengers tend to read some magazines to kill time.
25. Which country’s passengers are most likely to make conversation with other passengers?
A. China B. America C. Britain D. Brazil
26. From the last paragraph we can infer that _____________.
A. passengers are still unsatisfied with the in-flight service.
B. passengers desire for better entertainment and improved connectivity.
C. the aircraft industry has taken some measures to make passengers feel better.
D. passengers have recognized and accepted the improvements of the aircraft industry.
27. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. How to improve the in-flight service. B. What should we do to kill time on the plane?
C. Ways to make our flight comfortable. D. Nationality influences your behaviors on board.

Whether it is Mozart or Miley, your choice of music could determine whether you will perform well at your job.
A new study suggests that listening to music in the office improves the speed and accuracy of tasks such as data entry, proof reading (校对) and problem solving.
In an office-based experiment, 88 % of participants were found to produce their most accurate work when listening to music. The study also found that 81 % completed their fastest work when music was played.
And it matters what type of music you listen to. For example, if you're doing your tax returns, then classical music is the most effective as it improves maths skills.
Listening to Jessie J or Justin Bieber could also improve your speed, with 58 % of participants completing data entry (输入) tasks faster while listening to pop songs.
During proof-reading, dance music, such as David Guetta, had the biggest positive impact, with participants increasing their speed by 20 % compared to tests undertaken with no music at all. Dance music also had a positive effect on spell-checking with a 75 % pass rate compared to 68 % when no music was played at all.
The research, undertaken by Mindlab International, suggests that silent offices may be the least productive.
“The MusicWorks experiment presented a positive correlation(相关性)between music and productivity—overall it showed that when listening to music, nine out of ten people performed better,” said Dr David Lewis, chairman of Mindlab International.
28. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Listening to music can improve the efficiency of your study.
B. Pop music or rock music helps to improve your maths skills.
C. Working in a silent office may make productivity the lowest.
D. When listening to music during the job, 80% of people perform better.
29. What’s the possible meaning of the underlined word “impact”?
A. influence B. quality C. preparation D. development
30. If Tom wants to analyze some data and calculate some numbers, what type of music he’d better choose?
A. Pop music B. Rock music C. Dance music D. Classical music
31. If the author continues the passage, what will he be likely to talk about next?
A. How to improve the productivity in the office. B. Why music can improve the performance at your job.
C. More types of music in our life. D. The influence of music on our work and life.
D
It is pretty much a one-way street. While it may be common for university researchers to try their luck in the commercial world, there is very little traffic in the opposite direction. Pay has always been the biggest deterrent, as people with families often feel they cannot afford the drop in salary when moving to a university job. For some industrial scientists, however, the attractions of academia (学术界) outweigh any financial considerations.
Helen Lee took a 70% cut in salary when she moved from a senior post in Abbott Laboratories to a medical department at the University of Cambridge. Her main reason for returning to academia mid-career was to take advantage of the greater freedom to choose research objects. Some areas of inquiry have few prospects (可能性) of a commercial return, and Lee's is one of them.
The impact of a salary cut is probably less severe for a scientist in the early stages of a career. Guy Grant, now a research associate at the Unilever Centre for Molecular Informatics at the University of Cambridge, spent two years working for a pharmaceutical (制药的) company before returning to university as a post-doctoral researcher. He took a 30% salary cut but felt it worthwhile for the greater intellectual opportunities.
Higher up the ladder, where a pay cut is usually more significant, the demand for scientists with a wealth of experience in industry is forcing universities to make the transition (转换) to academia more attractive, according to Lee. Industrial scientists tend to receive training that academics do not, such as how to build a multidisciplinary team, manage budgets and negotiate contracts. They are also well placed to bring something extra to the teaching side of an academic role that will help students get a job when they graduate, says Lee, perhaps experience in manufacturing practice or product development. “Only a small number of undergraduates will continue in an academic career. So someone leaving university who already has the skills needed to work in an industrial lab has far more potential in the job market than someone who has spent all their time on a narrow research project.”
32. By the underlined phrase “a one-way street”, the author means __________.
A. university researchers know little about the commercial world
B. there is little exchange between industry and academia
C. few industrial scientists would quit to work in a university
D. few university professors are willing to do industrial research
33. What was Helen Lee’s major consideration when she changed her job in the middle of her career?
A. Flexible work hours. B. Her research interests.
C.Her preference for the lifestyle on campus.D. Prospects of academic accomplishments.
34. Guy Grant chose to work as a researcher at Cambridge in order to __________.
A. do financially more rewarding work B. raise his status in the academic world
C. enrich his experience in medical research D.explore better intellectual opportunities
35. What contribution can industrial scientists make when they come to teach in a university?
A. Develop its students’ potential in research.
B. Increase its graduates’ competitiveness in the job market.
C. Help it to obtain financial support from industry.
D. Adapt its research towards practical applications.

Encouraging Positive Relationships
Choosing one’s friends is an important part of growing up. And although you can’t choose your children’s friends, you can have a positive influence on the relationships they make throughout their formative years. Use the following strategies to help your children to build positive relationships with their friends.
●Encourage diversity. 36 In addition to exposing your kids to more diversity, it will also help them learn more about themselves.
●Avoid criticism. Avoid criticizing friendships, but be honest with your kids when you’re concerned. 37 This may make them defensive and less receptive to what you have to say. Do be open and willing to listen to what they have to say, and talk about what makes you nervous.
● 38 If you feel that one of your child’s friends is having a negative influence on him, invite that friend to spend time with you and your child together so that you can have a positive influence on the relationship.
● Engage in community service. Engage your family in service and volunteering (or join a social group) through a local church, school, or other nonprofit organization. 37 .
● 40 When talking about a friend who has a negative influence on your child, focus your comments on that friend’s behaviors, not on her personality. For example, instead of calling your child’s friend irresponsible for smoking, you could point out that the behavior has a negative effect on her health and recommend ways for your child to help her quit.
A. Get involved.
B. Don’t blame your child’s friends.
C. Help your kids find the group that they fit with.
D. These events can be great places to meet new friends.
E. It’s important to develop positive relationships with family members as well.
F. Challenge your children to get to know kids from many different backgrounds.

In China, people and giant pandas have been living together for thousands of years. But China’s human population has been great growing. More population means more land is needed for farming. It also means more forests are cut for wood to build and heat houses. Lose of habitat in lowland areas has forced pandas live only in the mountains. The most damaged result of development have been that it has divided the panda’s habitat into little islands of forest. Today, many pandas are isolated in these small sections of forest, because of they will cross into areas which people live. The result is that the giant pandas can connect with each others to mate and have babies.
Besides, to our relief, there is still some good news that people are trying to help the giant pandas by creating protected areas.

Dear Mr. Green,
I am Li Hua from China, determined to fly to the U.K. for my winter vacation. I have booked my hotel on the internet. I am writing to ask you for some information before I get there.
To begin with, my flight is scheduled to arrive at Heathrow Airport at 8 p.m. on February13. I wonder if it is convenient for me to get to the hotel by public transport. Besides, I’d like to know more details about the accommodation, especially something about the meals, as I didn’t see that on the web page. More importantly, could you recommend some attractions to visit? London has always been my dream place to explore the English culture, but with too many choices, recommendations from you will be valuable and highly appreciated.
Looking forward to your reply and seeing you in London.
All the best.
Yours
Li Hua
