Our story begins at the John Burroughs Elementary School in Washington, D.C. The school's kindergarten students are staying late today—an hour after classes normally end. The boys and girls are not seeking help with reading skills or mathematics. Instead, they are tasting kale, a vegetable that many of them are eating for the first time.

The school's teacher Dionne Hammiel says her students have learned healthy eating habits from the program. She hopes they will keep a healthy diet for the rest of their lives.

The program is taught by young people like Karen Davison. She is a member of FoodCorps. The non-profit group gets money from the AmeriCorps National Service Program. Since the beginning of the school year, Ms. Davison has spent each day in this Washington,  D.C. classroom. She gives the kindergartners vegetables that many of them have never tasted. She teaches them where their food comes from and how they can choose to eat healthier meals.

FoodCorps was set up five years ago. It sends more than 180 young Americans to 500 schools across the United States. The young people teach students about nutrition and how they can eat healthy food both at school and at home. FoodCorps also works with other groups to plant vegetable gardens in schools and bring healthier food to stores—especially stores in cities. Many small urban stores often sell only packaged food.

Maddie Morales is a member of FoodCorps. She says the group's work is especially important in the fight against childhood obesity—when a child has too much body fat. She notes that the child obesity rate in the United States is twice what it was 30 years ago.

    (2018·山东部分重点中学第一次联考)

If you followed the 2016 Olympic Games, you may have noticed that several athletes, including US swimmer Michael Phelps, had circular bruises on their bodies. These bruises were the result of “cupping(拔火罐) therapy”, a traditional Chinese medicinal practice that has been around for more than 2,000 years.

Many athletes say that they have benefited from the therapy. Phelps used the therapy in the fall of 2014 and has used it about twice a week since, reported ABC News. Another US swimmer, Dana  Vollmer, also believes that “it really helps with blood flow”.

However, some have said that the supposed health effects result from people's feeling that the treatment works, rather than any physical effect of the treatment.

To figure out cupping therapy has any physical effect, last year researchers from Germany carried out a test in which a false treatment was provided.

In the study, the same type of cups was used in the real treatment and the false treatment. But in the false treatment, the cups had a hole at the top so that they couldn't create the proper suction(吸力).

The tested patients, who suffered from a disorder that caused a lot of pain, were told that they would receive either a traditional cupping or “soft cupping”. But they were not informed that the so-called “soft cupping” was a false treatment.

It turned out that most patients correctly guessed which kind of cupping they had received. In both groups, patients also experienced about the same reductions in pain. “The results suggest the effects of cupping therapy might come from factors that are not necessarily part of the treatment itself,” the researchers told the Live Science website.

The question of whether cupping therapy works still needs to be answered. “But because the treatment is relatively safe and it could be helpful for some people, the therapy can be used as part of a comprehensive treatment program involving other exercises, nutritional choices and lifestyle changing,” Dr. Brent Bauer, director of the US Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program at Mayo Clinic, told Live Science.

    语篇解读:里约奥运会让中医传统疗法——拔火罐一夜走红。本文主要介绍了中国传统医疗方式拔火罐的实际疗效问题。

    [答案] C

A.promote the health effects of cupping therapy

B.see whether cupping therapy has a physical effect

C.compare traditional cupping with the soft cupping

D.compare cupping therapy's effects on different groups of people

6.What can be learned from the passage?

A.Different people need different types of cupping therapy.

B.The real treatment and false treatment almost have the same effects.

C.The results show that cupping therapy is not part of the treatment.

D.Cupping therapy is only effective when used with lifestyle changing.

[解析] 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段的“In both groups, patients also experienced about the same reductions in pain.”可知,实验表明两种不同的拔火罐方法效果是一样的。

Average humans can consume 15 or more drinks in plastic bottles a month. If you were born after 1978, and live until 80 years old, you will leave behind a minimum of 14,400 plastic bottles on this planet. These bottles take hundreds of years to break down into tiny pieces of plastic, never to completely disappear. Most of the waste is consumed by fish and birds, which has shortened their lifespans(寿命) greatly.

The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally save us from being buried in plastic. It's a community in Panama that is going to be made of used bottles. The design process begins with building steel frames, which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is complete, and electrical and plumbing lines are put inside, the plastic walls are covered by concrete—both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the walls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house 17℃ cooler than the outside, which is the biggest benefit to people living inside.

The village is the brainchild(主意) of Robert Bezeau with the intention of setting up several environmental projects. Having started a recycling program four years ago, during which a number of plastic bottles were collected, he started to think of how they could be put to use. Soon enough, he decided to use them to build houses, and came up with a basic idea for the construction process.

The project hopes to make people conscious of the waste that these bottles create so that they can do more to protect the environment. The village will also create an education center that will teach individuals from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as construction materials for shelter. Recycled bottles could neutralize the negative effect of your passage on this planet, and move closer to leaving only your “footprints”.

    Dear Alcohol,

You've been around forever. I can remember all the pain you've caused me.

Do you remember the night when you almost took my father's life? I do. He loves you. Sometimes I think he loves you more than he loves me.  He's addicted to you and to the way you promise to rid him of his problems only to cause more of them. You just sat back and laughed as his car went turning through the street, crashing into two other cars. He wasn't the only one badly hurt by you that night.

Do you remember the night of my first high school party? My friends were_intrigued_by you. They treated you as if they were never going to see you again, drinking all of you that they could. I spent two hours that night helping my friends who had fallen head over heels for you. “I'm so embarrassed,” they said as I held their hair back so that they could throw up. “I'm sorry,” they said when I called taxis for them, walking them out and paying the driver in advance. “This won't happen again,” they said as they were sent to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Two 15yearold girls slept in hospital beds that night due to you.

Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17yearold neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lessons? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car headon and killed two people in the other car? He died the next morning too. His sister walked home from her dance lesson, and passed police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didn't realize her brother was among them at all. She never saw him again. And it was all your fault.

I wish you'd walk out of my life forever.  I don't want anything to do with you. Look at all the pain you've caused. Sure, you've made people happy too from time to time. But the damage you've caused in the lives of millions is not excusable. Stop attracting the people I love! Stop hurting me, please.

    Sincerely.

    Me
