Exam day—what do you do?I take a ring my grandfather gave me to the exam. It’s a reminder of his affection and gives me a sense of security and calms my nerves. My brother makes a fuss about wearing his green underwear.
He’s not alone in placing his hopes in a garment. One in three students admit wearing “good luck underwear” to try to boost exam chances, according to a poll for pen makers,Bic.
The same poll suggested that 60% of students change their diet before a test in the hope that it can increase their brain power and memory—oily fish and fruit and vegetables are at the top of the list. This is good as long as you don’t stuff your face with junk food all year long and decide to go healthy just for the exam.
Making the extra effort to succeed is good but if you haven’t put in the hours of study, nothing will help you.Patrick Wilson, former teacher and founder of a private tuition firm, says,“The best way to feel truly confident and help beat that stomach-churning exam angst(焦虑) is to prepare for each exam in advance, making sure you have a dedicated structure for your revision schedule.”
Wilson helped to create a guide for avoiding the last-minute jitters(紧张).It advises the revision timetable to start up to ten weeks before the exam, dividing learning into chunks.Don’t overload yourself.Students should also give themselves regular rewards and breaks during revision.People learn things in different ways and this should be taken into account.I learn better by reading things out loud. Some colleagues believe colour-coordinating notes according to subject can produce good results too.
But there’s a consensus against spending the night before the exam studying. If you don’t get enough sleep, not even good luck underwear will help you pass the test.
21.Why does the author mention his taking jewelry and his brother’s wearing green underwear to their exams?
A.To show his affection to his grandfather.
B.To makes a fuss about exams.
C.To attract reader’s attention and introduce the topic.
    D.To show exams’ great value.
22.According to the text, what is the best way to beat exams?
A.Taking oily fish and fruit and vegetables before a test.
B.Spending many hours studying for each exam in advance.
    C.Wearing “good luck underwear”.
D.Staying up the night before the exam studying.
23.Which of the following is true?
A.A quarter of the students admitted wearing “good luck underwear” to the exams.
B.More students change their diet than those wearing “good luck underwear” to exams.
C.A minority of students change their diet before a test.
D.60% of students stuff their face with junk food but decide to go healthy just for the exam.

A few weeks ago,I called an Uber to take me to the Boston airport for a flight home for the holidays. As I slid into the back seat of the car,the warm intonations(语调) of the driver’s accent washed over me in a familiar way.
I learned that he was a recent West African immigrant with a few young children, working hard to provide for his family.I could relate:I am the daughter of two Ethiopian immigrants who made their share of sacrifices to ensure my success.I told him I was on a college break and headed home to visit my parents. That’s how he found out I go to Harvard. An approving eye glinted at me in the rearview window, and quickly,we crossed the boundaries of rider and driver.I became his daughter, all grown up—the product of his sacrifice.
And then came the fateful question:“What do you study?” I answered “history and literature” and the pride in his voice faded,as I knew it might.I didn’t even get to add “and African-American studies” before he cut in,his voice thick with disappointment,“All that work to get into Harvard, and you study history?”
Here I was,his daughter, squandering the biggest opportunity of her life.He went on to deliver the age-old lecture that all immigrant kids know.We are to become doctors(or lawyers,if our parents are being generous)—to make money and send money back home. The unspoken demand, made across generations, which my Uber driver laid out plainly,is simple:Fulfill your role in the narrative(故事) of upward mobility so your children can do the same.
I used to feel anxious and backed into a corner by the questioning, but now as a junior in college,I’m grateful for their support more than anything. This holiday season,I’ve promised myself I won’t get annoyed at their inquiries.I won’t defensively respond with “but I plan to go to law school!” when I get unrequested advice.I’ll just smile and nod,and enjoy the warmth of the occasion.
    24.What disappointed the driver?
    A.The author’s attitude towards him.
B.The school that the author is attending.
C.The author’s majors in the university.
D.The author’s interests in African American studies.
25.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “squandering” in Paragraph 4?
    A.Wasting. B.Creating. C.Valuing. D.Seizing.
26.Why are immigrant kids expected to be doctors or lawyers?
A.Their parents want them to move upward in society.
B.Their parents are high achieving as well.
    C.They have more opportunities.
D.They are very smart in general.
27.How did the author react to the driver’s questioning?
    A.Getting upset. B.Feeling satisfied.
    C.Defending herself. D.Appreciating his concern.

First-time shoppers at Seattle-based Amazon Go may feel as though they were stealing. That’s because the 1,800 square-foot grocery store, which opened its doors to the public on January 22,has no cashiers or even checkout counters.Instead,as the name indicates, customers merely grab what they need and go!But before you start celebrating, the goods are not free—the cost of the purchase(s) is/are calculated electronically using “Just Walk Out” technology.
The process is simple.Upon entering the store, shoppers “sign-in” by scanning their smartphones.Every item selected gets added to the bill automatically. If the customer changes his mind, all he has to do is return the purchase to the shelf, and it will be removed from the final bill.Though consumers will not find everything they need, they will be able to buy basics like bread, milk, and drinks. There are also numerous ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner choices made by chefs in the on-site kitchen. Those that prefer to cook at home can select from the wide variety of Amazon Meal Packages.
Once the customer exits the store, the system processes the purchases and charges the cost to their Amazon account.Within seconds, the customer is notified of the deal with a digital receipt that lists each item bought,as well as the time spent in the store. The accurate tracking is possible thanks to multiple smart cameras that monitor everything the shopper is doing.Kumar explains,“Cameras figure out which interactions(互动) you have with the shelves.Computer vision figures out which items are taken.Machine-learning also determine which item it is.” The company insists that the system is so accurate that shoplifting(偷盗) is impossible. And they should know, considering that Amazon employees have been shopping there since 2015!
The store has raised some concern about the jobs of the over 3.5 million cashiers in America. However,Amazon officials say they have nothing to worry about because human employees are not being displaced. They are simply assigned other essential tasks, like preparing meals, restocking shelves, assisting customers, and solving technical issues.
28.How is Amazon Go different from traditional grocery stores?
A.Shoppers have to pay in cash.
B.The goods are free of charge.
    C.Shopping is done by machine.
    D.Payment can be made automatically.
29.What can we learn from the text?
A.First-time shoppers in Amazon Go don’t steal.
B.You must operate on a smartphone to return unwanted items.
C.Jobs of cashiers will still exist in the near future.
D.Shop assistants will figure out what you have bought.

    A Simple Thank-You
I have been in the teaching profession more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known was Mr.Rowe.I was lucky enough to co-teach the fourth grade with him.
Mr.Rowe had infinite patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him.He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw.Steven couldn’t stand school. He didn’t like being picked last for kickball. He didn’t like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly,he didn’t like himself.
The first day he walked into Mr.Rowe’s classroom,he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.
Mr.Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven’s shoulder, but Steven pulled away.Nevertheless,Mr.Rowe welcomed him,“Hi,Steven.I’m happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year.” Steven looked around the room as if Mr.Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.
So,while Mr.Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school,it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.
That day after classes,Mr.Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball at recess.“Hey,Steven,” Mr.Rowe commented,“You are good at pitching.Let me show you my secret trick.” Mr.Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform.Steven learned fast and did quite well!Everyone cheered for him!
After the kickball,Steven sat as closer to Mr.Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked,Steven lit up;he knew the answer! He raised his hands. When he answered the question, his voice shook. However,he got the answer right! He said, with Mr.Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.
That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was evident that Steven grew to love Mr.Rowe more and more with each passing day.

根据第四段第二句中的“The best way to feel truly confident and help beat that stomach-churning exam angst(焦虑) is to prepare for each exam in advance, making sure you have a dedicated structure for your revision schedule.”
根据文章第三段第二句“I answered ‘history and literature’ and the pride in his voice faded,as I knew it might” 和第三句中“his voice thick with disappointment,‘All that work to get into Harvard, and you study history?’
根据文章第四段最后一句“Fulfill your role in the narrative(故事) of upward mobility so your children can do the same.”
根据文章最后一段第一句中“I used to feel anxious and backed into a corner by the questioning”和最后一句“I’ll just smile and nod,and enjoy the warmth of the occasion.”
根据第一段第四句“But before you start celebrating, the goods are not free—the cost of the purchase(s) is/are calculated electronically using ‘Just Walk Out’ technology.”
decision“决定”;fortune“机会,巨款”。
in the middle of(doing) sth.“忙于(做)某事”,符合语境。at the end of...“在……结束时”;on the way to...“在去……的路上”。
    38.B 根据下文描述的教授与重要合伙人洽谈、整天开会等忙碌的情形可推知,教授掌管(leading)这个项目的运行。sponsor“赞助,举办,提交(法案等)”;assist“协助”;adopt“收养,采用”。
    39.C 根据下文中的“crossing the country on flights”可知,教授乘飞机(flying)在全国奔波。research“研究”;inspect“检查,审视”。

promote“促进,推动,促销”;expand“扩大,增加”;observe“观察,监视,遵守”。

44.C 根据下文中的“He had to be rushed to the hospital”可知,长期超负荷工作导致教授身体(body)垮掉,不得不紧急住院治疗。
disappear“消失”;suffer“受苦,受难,受折磨”;function“运转,起作用”。
ready to do sth.“准备好做某事”;unwilling to do sth.“不愿意做某事”;eager to do sth.“渴望做某事”。
status“地位”;reputation“名声,名誉”。
    49.B 根据空前的“sleep,nutrition,laughter,and other forms of”可知,空处所填词应能涵盖sleep,nutrition,laughter,指能填满你的“桶”的东西(即恢复健康和精力的东西),故recovery“恢复”符合语境。entertainment“招待,娱乐”;accommodation“膳宿,住宿”。
空前的“drain(使排出) the water from your bucket”及最后一段中的“outputs”也是提示。restriction“约束,制约因素”;consequence“后果”;example “例子,典型,样品”。
uncontrollable“无法控制的,失控的”;unpredictable“难以预料的”;uncomfortable“使人不舒服的”。
slip“溜,滑倒”;escape“逃跑,逃脱”;grow“成长”。
    54.B partly“部分地,一定程度上”;surprisingly“出人意料地”;thoroughly“彻底,完全”。
slight“轻微的”;gradual“逐渐的”;temporary“暂时的”。

    Paragraph 1:
Time passed quickly that year, and before we all knew it,it was the last day of school. Our school had a very special tradition on the last day.All the teachers filled the sidewalk, waving goodbye to the kids as the buses piled out with their horns honking. But on that particular day,Steven walked slowly to the bus,his head down, tears in his eyes.He boarded the bus reluctantly, hesitated, and then ran back off the bus to hug Mr.Rowe.“I don’t want to leave you,” he sobbed. With red-rimmed eyes,Mr.Rowe comforted him,“I will miss you, too.”
    Paragraph 2:
Many years later,Mr.Rowe and I were surprised when a handsome young man walked into our classroom, dressed in the Marine Corps(海军) uniform. The young man stood tall and proud. It was Steven!Mr.Rowe and I couldn’t believe our eyes.He saluted and hugged Mr.Rowe tightly!“I have come back to school today just to say thanks to you!” It is my hope that every teacher is blessed with such an experience of a former student coming back to say, simply to say a very simple THANK-YOU.
