Crossing your legs is an extremely common but unconscious habit. While you may find this gesture comfortable, it might be causing health problems without your ignorance.
A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The habit increases the resistance for the blood to be pumped back to your heart, making it harder to circulate, which causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but it’s quite another thing for long periods of time. So, you’d better not have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and it’s advisable to get up and walk around at least once every hour.
Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. It’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day, but when you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, causing one of your pelvic bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck.
You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs become uncomfortable. This is because crossing your legs causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis (麻痹) in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage.
So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.
21. Which one is not the consequence of crossing legs while sitting?
A. increased blood pressure
C. immediate paralysis
B. painful neck and back
D. everlasting nerve damage
22. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce some deadly results of crossing the legs.
B. To inform readers of harm of crossing the legs.
C. To help people get rid of crossing the legs.
D. To explain why crossing the legs increase the blood pressure.
23. Where does the passage probably come from?
A. A biology news
C. A health newspaper
B. A medical book
D. A research report
B
Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone.
The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences.
For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.
“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.
“To mitigate the drawbacks…we created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn.”
The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate.
The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.
24. The GazeSpeak app is intended for _________________.
A. people with hearing difficulties
B. people with sight problems
C. people with ALS
D. people with speech disability
25. What does the underlined word “mitigate” probably mean?
A. To investigate B. To lower C. To improve D. To identify
26. What do we know about the GazeSpeak app from the passage?
A. It is not that difficult to handle.
B. It costs a good deal.
C. It can convey the exact meaning of the speaker to the listener.
D. It is the only means by which people with ALS can communicate with others.
C
On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication severe weather was on its way—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel from the presidential primary debate I had been watching to our local Pensacola, Florida, station.
No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. Pink insulation flew into the room from a trapdoor to the attic, and the wind began to roar through the house, most likely through blown-out windows and the door to our garage. We had three flights of steps to navigate to get to the relative safety of the first floor. Because the closet down there is wedged underneath a brick staircase, it seemed like the sturdiest place in our town house to wait things out.
I didn’t know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind lifted me off my feet. I gripped the banister and tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place. In those seconds of practical stillness, I could hear everything around me rattling. Everything was moving.
As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Shards of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch whipped through the doorframe. It flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us.
We got close to the staircase landing only to hear the loud ripping sound of our garage door coming off. The back wall of the house followed suit and tore off into the darkness outside.
By the time I reached the closet, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I gripped Jimmy’s arm as the tornado sucked the door open—we never did get it fully shut—and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and scalp were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.
“Hold on! Hold on!” he yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to. We use it to store Christmas decorations.
All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over. Jimmy said he’d go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me.”
Our neighbor says the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured.
7. What does the underlined sentence “No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us.” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. As soon as the couple found the news of the tornado on the TV, it hit the town.
B. When the couple found something to cover their house, the tornado came.
C. The couple had not found tornado. Soon, it came on top of them.
D. The couple did not have the courage to fight against tornado when it was on the top of them.
8. Which of the following sentences is NOT true about the passage?
A. There was no any symbol of the tornado’s coming.
B. A three-foot-long tree branch impaled the couple.
C. Because of the strong wind, not both of the couple could get into the closet floor.
D. Jimmy didn’t fly right out back of the house.
9. Why didn’t the wife feel pain?
A. Because she didn’t get any hurt when the storm hit.
B. Because she was too scared to feel pain when the tornado was over her.
C. Because she devoted all her strength to holding on to her husband.
D. Because she had reached the closet and she was safe.
10. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A severe tornado hit the town.
B. The disaster should be warned in advance.
C. Man can conquer nature.
D. The couple experienced an unforgettable 4 minutes.
D. unbelievable

In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she was struggled to support their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s weathered (风化的)door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的)shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for some time?”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out.
He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own buildings in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used nail bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.

W:On the top of the mountain.
M:It’s so far from our town. How will you get there?
W:Jack’s father will take us there in his car.
Text 7
W:How did you begin to have this interest?
M:Well, when l was a boy, I used to collect train numbers, the numbers of the engines, that is. When I got the numbers of nearly all the engines on this island, I went to France, Holland, Germany, and Italy to look up the railways there.
W:And how many foreign countries have you been to?
M:I’ve been to 23 countries in Europe and America, and I'm hoping to go to the Far East and Australia next year.

M:Do you know what happened to me today? I was so embarrassed.
W:What?
M:Well, Doctor Brown’s class finished ten minutes early, so I went to the library between classes. I know I didn’t have much time, but I wanted to get those books on the industrial revolution. I looked them up in the card catalogs and went right to the stacks and found them. So I put them in my book bag and headed back toward me door. Then it happened. The exit gate in front of the door wouldn’t open, and the guard immediately warned me that I hadn’t checked out my books. He thought l was trying to steal them.
W:That must have been embarrassing. Why didn’t the exit gate open?
M:I asked him that. It seems that books in the library are all magnetically coded and when you check them out, the librarian behind the desk demagnetizes(给消磁)them, then the exit gate will open.
W:How interesting! I still don’t quite understand how they do it though. I'll have to go to the library and see it for myself.
Text 10
I’m Aimswell and I live on the island of Tobago in the West Indies. Local people here fish for themselves and some of them even supply fish to big hotels. Recently everyone has started to notice that there are not as many fish in the sea as there used to be and the fish that we are catching now are really small. If everyone keeps catching all the fish when they are so young, we may soon run out. I am involved in a programme my teacher Mr. Peters started at my school. It aims to find a way for people in Tobago to be able to continue eating fish without making the ones in the sea rare. We are farming a freshwater fish called tilapia which people can keep in their homes and gardens in tanks. All the tilapia needs to eat is water plants which we grow in the school. That’s why it is introduced to us. The fish will grow big enough to be eaten in about four months. Mr. Peters hopes that when all the kids at my school go home and show their parents how we have kept fish at school, they can do the same at home. He hopes that one day everyone in Tobago will be able to do it. I love working on the project not only because it is fun but also because it teaches us business skills and ways to help protect the environment.

36-40 DBACA 41-45 DABAC 46-50 ACBCD 51-55 ABCDA
56. policies 57. leaving 58. greater 59. where 60. are playing
61. choice 62. and 63. stuck 64. However 65. with
56. policies
57. leaving
58. greater
60. are playing
故填are playing。
61. choice
故填and。
63. stuck
Stick
故填with。

Every day after school, Reuben started his plan. Cold and hungry, Reuben wandered the streets, searching for the nail bags carefully. To save more money, he even decided to deliver papers in the early morning. Exhausted and tired as he felt, he still insisted on. It was the brooch in the shop window that reminded him that what he did was worthwhile. After a long time of hard work, he made it eventually. After a long time of hard work, he made it eventually.
Finally the time came! He took out the soda tin, poured the coins out and began to count. Five dollars! His hard work paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly, Reuben rushed for the shop to buy the brooch. The moment he got the beautiful brooch, he burst through the front door and placed it in Dora’s hand. Never had Dora received such a gift. Speechless and happy, she held her son tightly into her arms, with tears welling up in her eyes.

In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw something in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price-five dollars-was far beyond Reuben Earle's means. Five dollars would buy almost a week's groceries for his family.
Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to her mother, Dora, who struggled to feed and clothe their five children.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop's weathered door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding ,“But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”
“I'll try,”the shopkeeper smiled.“Folks around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails purchased in sacks from a local factory. Sometimes the used sacks were disposed of at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he found two sacks, which he sold to the man in charge of packing nails.
The boy's hand tightly clutched the five-cent pieces as he ran the two kilometers home.
Near his house stood an ancient barn. Reuben found a rusty soda tin and dropped his coins inside. Then he climbed into it and hid the tin beneath a pile of hay.
It was dinnertime when Reuben got home. His father was ready to serve dinner as Reuben took his place at the table. He looked at his mother and smiled. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. Her chores were never-ending, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were her highest priority.
Every day after chores and school, Reuben scouted the town, collecting the nail sacks. Summer vacation came, and no student was more delighted than Reuben. Now he would have more time for his mission. All summer long, despite chores at home weeding and watering the garden, cutting wood and fetching water — Reuben kept to his secret task.
Then all too soon fall arrived, and the winds blew cold and gusty from the bay. Reuben wandered the streets, diligently searching for his treasures. Often he was cold, tired and hungry, but the thought of the object in the shop window sustained him. Sometimes his mother would ask:"Reuben, where were you? We were waiting for you to have dinner."
“Playing, Mum. Sorry.”
Dora would look at his face and shake her head. Boys.
Finally the time had come! He ran into the barn, climbed to the hayloft and uncovered the tin can. He poured the coins out and began to count.
Then he counted again. He needed 20 cents more. Could there be any sacks left anywhere in town? He had to find out and sell them before the day ended. Reuben ran down Water Street. The shadows were lengthening when Reuben arrived at the factory. The sack buyer was about to lock up.
“Mister! Please don't close up yet.”
The man turned and saw Reuben, dirty and sweat stained.
“Come back tomorrow, boy.”
“Please, Mister. I have to sell the sacks now — please.”The man heard a tremor in Reuben's voice and could tell he was close to tears.
“Why do you need this money so badly?”
“It's a secret.”
The man took the sacks, reached into his pocket and put four coins in Reuben's hand. Reuben murmured a thank you and ran home.
Then, clutching the tin can, he headed for the shop.
“I have the money,”he solemnly told the owner.
The man went to the window and retrieved Reuben's treasure.
He wiped the dust off and gently wrapped it in brown paper. Then he placed the parcel in Reuben's hands.
Racing home, Reuben burst through the front door. His mother was busy in the kitchen.
“Here, Mum! Here!”Reuben exclaimed as he ran to her side. He placed a small box in her work-roughened hand.
She unwrapped it carefully, to save the paper. A blue-¬velvet jewel box appeared. Dora lifted the lid, tears beginning to blur her vision. In gold lettering on a small, almond-shaped brooch was the word "Mother". It was Mother's Day, 1946.
Dora had never received such a gift; she had no finery except her wedding ring. Speechless, she smiled radiantly and gathered her son into her arms.

A
Crossing your legs is an extremely common but unconscious habit.

W:Where on earth are you going tonight?
M:To the cinema together with Liza, my new girlfriend. I want to look rich.

1. A
下划线句子中“no sooner…than…” 故选A。
2. B
On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication severe weather was on its way可知,A正确;第四段Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us. Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.
My knees and scalp were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.

36-40 DBACA 41-45 DABAC 46-50 ACBCD 51-55 ABCDA
56. policies 57. leaving 58. greater 59. where 60. are playing
61. choice 62. and 63. stuck 64. However 65. with
56. policies
57. leaving
58. greater
60. are playing
故填are playing。
61. choice
故填and。
63. stuck
Stick
故填with。

Finally the time came! He took out the soda tin, poured the coins out and began to count. Five dollars! His hard work paid off! Holding the soda tin firmly, Reuben rushed for the shop to buy the brooch. The moment he got the beautiful brooch, he burst through the front door and placed it in Dora’s hand.
