Last night, on my way home I stopped because of being attracted by some hamburgers at a
fast food restaurant. On my way in, a homeless man approached me and asked, “Do you have any
bottles lying around?” I knew he would recycle them for a few cents, but I didn’t have any, so I
said no. And again he asked, “Can you spare some change (零钱)?” I smiled, and said no again.
He was very respectful; he smiled back and said, “OK, thank you.” Even though he didn’t have
anything, he was still in good spirits. From the way he spoke I could tell he was smart.
Then I bought one hamburger and enjoyed my meal, but in the back of my mind I wondered
whether the homeless man was hungry. After I finished my meal I decided to order another one for
him. At this point I didn’t know if he was still around, but I tried anyway.
At the counter I ordered a hamburger and also a hot chocolate, because it was cold outside,
and I thought it would help warm him up. They delivered me the hot chocolate first and as I
waited for my hamburger, I noticed the homeless man was standing right beside me. I looked at
him and smiled, “This hot chocolate is for you.”He replied like a gentleman,“Thank you so much.

That’s very kind of you.”
I always believe no matter how hard up (缺钱) I am, there are always those who are worse off

you can give is love.

A. Because he was hungry and thirsty.
B. Because he wanted to help the homeless man there.
C. Because he hoped he could collect some bottles there.
D. Because the hamburgers there interested him.
25. We can learn from the first two paragraphs that the author _____.
A. was angry with the homeless man
B. decided to help the homeless man after his meal
C.was an old friend of the homeless man
D. finished his meal quickly to help the homeless man
26. We can infer from the text that the homeless man was _____.

C. polite and friendly D. calm and confident
27. The author wants to tell us that _____.
A. there is always someone that we can help
B. money cannot buy everything

Castle Dale is a small town in central Utah. My grandpa’s farm is a few miles to the north. I
grew up there. Milking a cow, feeding the chickens and cutting firewood were daily routines.
Grandpa had me carrying a broom to do snow cleaning when it was actually taller than I was. This
was the work kids like me learned to do at a young age.
I was tall, very tall at a really young age. My unusual height caused people to look, ask
questions, laugh, tease, and sometimes even challenge me to fight. I was teased cruelly as a kid. It
wasn’t fair, I knew, but that was just the way it was. Luckily, I was taught at a very young age a
very important lesson. I am different and that’s Okay—I’m unique and I matter. No one could ever
take that away from me. I knew this then, and I know this now. That alone helped me through the
frustrations and heartaches of normal life.
When I was in junior high school, I realized something else that helped me cope. Most teasing
came from one of two places—people who were either jealous or ignorant (愚昧). I couldn’t
change the way they were, but I could change the way I felt. I was not going to feel bad because of
their ignorance or jealousy. It wasn’t worth it. Realizing this didn’t stop them, or change the fact
that these comments hurt. It did, however, give me a way to understand these people and deal with
their treatment in a way that was okay for me.
These things still happen today. It will probably happen the rest of my life. I will always be 7
feet, 6 inches (2.29 meters) tall. I wouldn’t change that for anything. People will always look
because it is not every day that you see someone that tall. I learned that at a young age and I now
try to teach my own children that they are unique and they matter. That is the message I give to
you. Regardless of your race, religion, background, or circumstances ... Being different is okay.

It has been around for centuries, but up until very recently, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)
wasn’t fully accepted abroad. Proof of this can be found in The Treatment (《刮痧》), a 2001 film
that tells the story of a Chinese man in the US who’s accused of abuse after he uses guasha, a form
of TCM treatment, to cure his grandson’s disease.
During the last 10 years or so, however, TCM has been getting increasingly popular all over
the world. A report released by the State Council Information Office on Dec. 6 says this style of
health care, which includes different forms like herbal medicine and exercise, has spread to 183
countries and regions.
“We have set up 10 TCM centers outside China, and all of them are popular among locals,”
Wang Guoqiang, head of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said at a news
conference on Dec 6. “Governments of 86 countries and regions have signed agreements with the
Chinese government on TCM corporation.”
One of the reasons behind the growing popularity of TCM is the increase of scientific research
into it. And after Tu Youyou-the Chinese scientist who discovered the anti-malaria (抗疟疾) drug
qinghaosu ( 青 蒿 素 )-won the Nobel Prize last year, TCM became even more famous
internationally.
However, all these achievements in TCM don’t mean that it’s problem-free. Over the years,
TCM has faced challenges in being able to prove that it has certain effects.
Some researchers have suggested TCM should be more exact and work together with Western
medicine.
“Bringing together with Western medicine and TCM, rather than being in competition, is
where the potential for great effects is,” said Bernhard Schwartlander, the China representative of
the World Health Organization.
32. The film The Treatment is mentioned in the first paragraph is to________ .
A. introduce the film to readers
B. show TCM is increasingly popular
C. arouse readers’ interest in Western medicine
D. prove that TCM is not fully accepted in western countries
祁阳县 2019 年高考第二次模拟考试试卷·英语 第 6 页(共 8 页)
33. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. TCM is not exact in curing diseases
B. 10 TCM centers abroad are all set up by locals
C. 86 countries have cooperated with China on TCM
D. Tu Youyou’s success contributes to the popularity of TCM
34. According to Bernhard Schwartlander, TCM should________.
A. combine western medicine
B. face no challenge at all
C. give an exact description of its effects
D. compete with western medicine
35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. A report on TCM B. Opinions about TCM
C. TCM & Western Medicine D. Traditional healing spreads
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余
选项。
Teenagers are especially likely to suffer loneliness. Here are some suggestions for speeding a
recovery from loneliness.
Reach out to others, but start small. A smile and a friendly greeting for the student behind you
in line at the cafeteria won’t make you best friends. 36 It also can make it easier to interact
the next time.
Find a safe place to make connections. If going to the school dance makes you feel like you
just don’t belong, try joining a special-interest group. Maybe it’s the drama club or the marching
band. 37
Find other ways of making connections. Lonely people hunger for acceptance and friendship,
Sometimes feeling accepted and liked comes more easily when you do something for others.
38 Teach a child in reading. Take notes for a disabled classmate. You might be
surprised at the connections you make after reaching out in these ways.
39 Loneliness is an absence of quality friendships, not of a particular quantity of
friends. That’s why it’s important to know how to select a friend. The best friendships are those
based on similar values and attitudes.
You get what you expect, so expect the best. If you expect others to be friendly, you will
behave in similar ways.
40 It goes away as teens learn how to find their way through their social world and
connect with others.
A. But it will make you both feel pretty good.
B. So consider becoming a volunteer.
C. Some teens aren’t so adaptable, however.
D. Encourage people to be friendlier to you.
E. Choose the right people.
F. For most young people, loneliness is only temporary.
G. Look for a group that allows you to ease in gradually.

第二节:语法填空(共 10 小题; 每小题 1.5 分,满分 15 分)
Keeping a diary in English is one of the most 61 (effect) ways to improve our
English writing ability. 62 (compare) with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes
63 (little) time. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English. 64 we persist
in this practice, gradually we’ll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in
English, we certainly run up against many 65 (difficult). In the first place, 66
often happens that we have trouble finding appropriate words and phrases to give expression to
our mind. Secondly, there are many idiomatic ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is
extremely hard for us to put them into English properly. As far as I 67 (concern), my
68 (suggest) is that we should always have a notebook and a Chinese-English dictionary
within easy reach . Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down in our notebook and
then consult our dictionary. We can also turn to our English teacher for help, if necessary. In short,
I believe that it is 69 great use to keep a diary in English for 70 development of our

Dear Peter,
I am glad to receive the novel. Thank you for such a lovely birthday gift as I have been
expecting it for a long time. This novel gives me some insights into American society and daily
life.
I know you are interested in Chinese festivals, and therefore I have chosen an album of paper
