The sun was rising when Daryl’s delivery truck reached the highway. This was the best time of day to drive, when the roads were wide open and empty. He felt sure he was going to make it to Los Angeles before midnight. It looked like it was going to be a good day.
Then he saw it, a large lump in the middle of the road. Daryl often passed dead animals on the roadside but he knew then this was something different. He slammed on his brakes and the truck screeched to a halt.
The lump was a girl. He tried shaking her awake but she wouldn’t move, so he picked her up and carried her to the side of the road. At least she wouldn’t be run over there.
Now she was someone else’s problem. He had to make it to Los Angeles by midnight and didn’t have time to be a here. He climbed back into his truck but as he looked in his mirror and saw the girl lying still by the side of the road, he knew he couldn’t leave her. Daryl put her into his truck and drove to the next town.
An hour later he pulled up at the police station. After explaining what had happened, he prepared to leave, only for the policeman to say that he needed to make a report. Daryl knew this would take several hours, but he had no choice. There was no way he’d get to Los Angeles on time now.
Three hours later the report was done and the girl had recovered somewhat. She explained that she had fallen on the highway, weak from hunger, but could remember nothing else. She also thanked Daryl for saving her life. Daryl told her that he had been happy to help, but as he got back into his truck he knew his boss wouldn’t be.
Just as he was about to pull back onto the road, his mother called. “Have you seen?” she said, “A bridge collapsed two hours ago, the one that you drive over on the way to Los Angeles.”
Daryl’s blood run cold. If he had been on time, he would have been on that fallen bridge about two hours ago. Daryl realized how lucky he was.

    24. What did Daryl plan to do in Los Angeles?
    A. Go on holiday. B. Deliver some goods.
    C. Visit his mum. D. Report to his boss.
    25. Why did Daryl first leave the girl by the side of the road?
    A. He didn’t want to be late.
    B. He thought the girl would be fine.
    C. He knew that someone else would help.
    D. He worried the police would blame him.
    26. How did Daryl feel after he left the police station?
    A. Confident that he would be on time.
    B. Angry that he had to make the report.
    C. Proud that he had saved the girls life.
    D. Worried that his boss would be angry.
    27. What does the underlined expression “Daryl blood ran cold” in the last paragraph suggest?
    A. Daryl was now feeling more relaxed.
    B. Daryl thought he would be in trouble.
    C. Daryl was greatly shocked by the news.
    D. Daryl felt the sudden change in temperature.

When ordering food only takes a few minutes using a smartphone, it’s only natural that food deliveries have become part of college life. However, a university in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region is trying to put a stop to this trend on its campus.
On Nov 1, Guangxi University of Foreign Languages banned food delivery services and disposable food boxes, both to its campus and dormitories.
The ban immediately received fierce criticism from the university’s students, as well as internet users. Some complained that the ban made campus canteens very crowded. “There are not enough seats in the canteen, which forces us to eat standing up or squatting,” a student in the university surnamed Tan told Guangxi Television.
The crowded canteens also mean that extra time is spent dining, which could have been used to nap during the lunch break. Some even complained that the canteen only provides a few dishes, most of which don’t taste so great.
Su Junlv, from the university’s student affairs office, explained that the ban was carried out because off-campus food posed safety risks for students. It’s believed that take-away food had created a serious garbage problem, as there were often a large number of used food boxes found in campus garbage cans after students had finished their meals.
According to Su, the ban was also brought in to help students develop a healthy lifestyle. “While food delivery services bring convenience, they let students form some lazy habits,” Su told Xinhua. “They spend a whole day in the dorm playing video games, watching TV soap operas and ordering food online.”
However, in the eyes of Liu Junhai, a professor at Renmin University of China, there are other approaches that universities could take to improve their students’ meal times. “Universities should explore how to improve the dining experience in the canteens, such as the queuing and variety of dishes,” he told Xinhua.

    28. What does the passage mainly talk about?
    A. The convenience brought by food delivery.
    B. The effect of crowded canteens on students.
    C. A solution to stop students becoming lazy.
    D. A ban on food delivery in campus.
    29. In students’ opinion, what would be caused after the ban was carried out?
    A. It would take students less time to eat in the canteen.
    B. Students would enjoy various tasty dishes in the canteen.
    C. Some students may have their meals without seats in the canteen.
    D. Students would have a longer nap during lunch break.
    30. According to Su Junlv, the ban is intended to
    A. tell the students all off-campus food is unhealthy.
    B. rid the campus of used food boxes.
    C. force students to spend less time on entertainment.
    D. improve the dining experience in the canteens.
    31. What can we infer about Liu Junhai’s attitude to the ban?
    A. Negative B. Supportive C. Indifferent D. Skeptical

    D
A survey of university backgrounds of heads of major global companies found that Harvard in the United States was the most likely place to have studied in.
The Times Higher Education magazine ranked the universities attended by chief executive officers (CEO) of Fortune Global 500 companies. There are four US universities in the top 10, with three from France, two from Japan and one from South Korea. The highest ranked UK university is Oxford in 21st place.
This league table, described as the Alma Mater Index, shows which universities around the world taught the bosses of some of the world’s biggest companies. One in 20 had a degree from a single institution, Harvard. This included Margaret C. Whitman of Hewlett-Packard, Jeffrey R. Immelt of General Electric and Vittorio Colao of Vodafone.
But the top 10 for producing business leaders does not contain all the usual names that appear at the top of university rankings. Oxford and Cambridge are absent, but the University of Pennsylvania in the US and Keio University in Japan are included, along with three French universities, headed by the Ecole Polytechnique.
Across the top 100, universities from the US dominate, followed by universities in China, Japan, France and Germany. There are more CEOs who went to university in Asia than in Europe. In terms of national comparisons, UK universities produced the sixth highest number of global chief executives, with Oxford in 21st place and Cambridge in 45th place.
But even though Harvard might have taught the biggest number of bosses from the top 500 companies, it was not attended by any of the heads of the biggest 10 companies, who were from a more diverse range of universities.
Royal Dutch Shell is headed by a graduate of Zurich University of Applied Sciences; Walmart is headed by a student of Georgia Tech and Exxon Mobil has a chief executive from the University of Texas, Austin. Three of the leaders of these biggest companies went to university in China and the head of Volkswagen went to university in Stuttgart.

32.How many Asian universities are among the world’s top 10 universities for global CEOs?
    A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
33.What does the underlined word “dominate” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A.Decrease. B.Accelerate.
C.Take the lead. D.Make great progress.
34.What can we learn about the UK universities?
A.Cambridge University ranks highest among them.
B.None of them are among the top 10 list of the survey.
C.They performed better than French universities on the list.
D.They produced the second most number of global CEOs.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The Rankings of the Famous Universities in the World
B.Which Is Described as the Best University in the World?
C.Students Are Currently Entering Various Top-class Universities
D.Which University Tops the League Table of Where Bosses Studied?

Taking on a part-time job while pursuing a degree is hard work, but there are great benefits from that. Students with part-time jobs can eam their own money, develop good time-management skills, and gain experience in the workplace.
36 As they come into adulthood, earning an income can increase their confidence. Some students need to work through school to afford tuition. 37 Still, the money will be theirs to spend as they wish, and they may appreciate it more because they worked for it.
Students taking on a job on top of their studies will have less free time than non-working students. 38 They learn to skip fun activities to finish their responsibilities. This prepares them for life after school when they can’t find excuses for work that’s not finished in time,
Often, students take jobs that introduce them to their preferred career after school is over. 39 Even students who work in places not connected to their majors will look more impressive to potential employers. Employers look for employees who understand the work environment and work well as part of a team. 40 That will make it much easier for them to change their roles after leaving school.

    A. Others will set the money aside to pay back student loans.
    B. Other students may have to get help from their parents.
    C. Students having part-time jobs usually get employed easily after graduation.
    D. Having a part-time job helps students to get accustomed to the professional world.
    E. They tend to be better planners as they make sure they complete every task on deadline.
    F. Students who take part-time jobs will have more money than they would have otherwise.
    G. This allows them to gain experience in the business and begin meeting people in that field.
