American and British English


American and British English spelling differences are ne aspect f American and British English differences.





In the early 18th century，English spelling was nt standardized.Differences became nticeable(明显的，显著的) after the publishing f influential dictinaries.Current British English spellings fllw，fr the mst part，thse f Samuel Jhnsn's Dictinary f the English Language (1755)．Many f the new characteristic American English spellings were intrduced，althugh nt，fr the mst part，created，by Nah Webster in his American Dictinary f the English Language f 1828.


Webster was a strng prpnent(倡导者) f spelling refrm fr reasns bth phillgical and natinalistic.Many spelling changes prpsed in the US by Webster himself，and in the early 20th century by the Simplified Spelling Bard，never caught n.Amng the advcates f spelling refrm in England，the influences f thse wh preferred the Nrman (r Angl­French) spellings f certain wrds prved decisive.Subsequent spelling adjustments in the UK had little effect n present­day US spelling，and vice versa(反之亦然)．While in many cases American English deviated(偏离；脱离) in the 19th century frm mainstream British spelling，n the ther hand it has als ften retained (保留)lder frms.


The spelling systems f Cmmnwealth cuntries，fr the mst part，clsely resemble (像)the British system.In Canada，hwever，while mst spelling is “British”，many “American” spellings are als used.Additinal infrmatin n Canadian and Australian spelling is prvided thrughut the article.
