The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊)through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed suit.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik, Malay for auntie. Jane began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. “I know Makcik’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. “Go downstairs. Go now! Go!”

In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window that made his heart racing. But the price — five dollars — was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.
Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue (胶水) that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
He opened the shop’s weathered (风化的) door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding,“ But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”
"I’ll try," the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It can be kept for a while.”
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site (工地), and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a soda tin (汽水罐).

"Why did you do this without asking for my permission first? Don’t you know it’s a total waste of time and it will have bad influence on your study?" That’s what my mother yelled al the ten-year-old me when she found out that I had signed up for an English story-telling competition.
I bowed my head; yes, she was right. By then I was entering Grade Six, faced with the biggest challenge yet to come 一 the examination to enter my dream junior high school. For that, I had given up my beloved piano lesson, my favorite cartoon program and even the joyful weekend family reunion with my cousins. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if my very-strict-university-teacher mother got angry at me when I chose to do anything that had little to do with study at that important moment. In her opinion, if I hadn't spent all my time on my study I would have difficulty in entering my dream junior high school.
But that’s not all to it. Now please take a good look at the twenty-year-old me, and imagine what I was like when I was ten. Here are the key words: nervous, shy, tongue-tied when facing strangers, and essentially a bookworm. These signs looked fatal(致命的) to my mother, and possibly to you, too; she thought that I could be anything but a good public speaker.
Well, I myself actually said no to my English teacher at first, because I had never done anything like that before and I was afraid. But he told me that — since I liked reading so much, why not try to tell a story I love to everyone? He also promised me that the judges were not frightening at all; just think of them as carrots and cabbages in a vegetable garden.

Sometimes, good intentions alone are not enough when your attempt to be kind to someone leaves you feeling worse than before.
In a certain store where they sell puddings (补丁), a number of these delicious things are laid out in a row. Here you may select the one which is most to your taste, and you are even allowed to taste them before coming to a decision.
I have often wondered whether some people having no intention of making a purchase would take advantage of this privilege. One clay I asked a salesgirl the question, and I learned it was indeed the case.
"Now there's one old man," she told me. "He comes here almost every week and tastes each one of the puddings, though he never buys anything. I remember him from last year. Well, let him come if he wants it, and he is welcome to it. And what's more, I hope there are a lot more stores where he can go and get his share. He looks as if he needs it all right, and I suppose they can afford it."
She was still speaking when an elderly man walked up to the counter and began looking closely at the row of puddings with great interest.
"Why, that's the very man I've been telling you about," whispered the salesgirl, and then turned to him: "Would you like to taste them, sir? Here's a spoon for you to use."
The elderly gentleman, who was poor but neatly dressed, accepted the spoon and began to taste one after another of the puddings. "This is quite good. This is not had either, but a little too heavy."
Among the crowd of happy, rich-looking shoppers, the little black figure of the old man seemed pitiful and out of place, and in a burst of kindness, I went up to him and said: "Pardon me, sir, will you do me a favor? Let me purchase you one of these puddings. It would give me such pleasure."
Paragraph 1:
The old man jumped back as if he had been bitten, and the blood rushed to his face.

Paragraph 2:
The salesgirl took down the pudding from its stand and started to parcel it up.

A Sweet Song
"Nothing will ever be the same again," Ally whispered. She sank slowly into her father's favorite chair and stared at the small American flag on his desk, it was the flag which Chief Russell had given to her after the funeral last summer, when he hugged her and told her how proud the Police Department was of her dad’s work for them. His tears had warmed Ally’s cheeks; her own tears were still frozen inside her heart.
Ally looked at her father's picture on the bookcase. Dad was sitting in the middle of a stream, wet through but grinning proudly.
"I miss you, Dad," she said softly. By this time last year she had already taken dozens of pictures. Ever since she could remember, she and Dad had been a team, searching the woods behind the house each weekend for a glimpse of the special wood warbler(林莺).
Ally reached for the first photo album she and Dad had put together. On the cover a tiny orange bird with blue-gray wings and sharp black eyes peered out of the photo her father had clipped from a local newspaper. Ally smiled t remembering the excited look on his face when he first showed her the pretty bird. "Ally, I bet if we search real hard, well see this little guy together some day."
They'd never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. Staying with Dad, Ally felt comfortable. "If only I could get that good feeling back," she thought, sighing.
Staring at the bird, suddenly, she knew exactly what she had to do. Grabbing the little flag, she placed her camera around her neck and hurried outside. Ally stuck the flag among the flowers in the garden. "Please let me see the warbler," she murmured to herself. She gave her worried mom a kiss and then set off into the woods.

The Robson Valley, where I live in the Canadian Rookies, has wonderful scenery of snow-covered mountains, ranches (牧场)and farms, which attracts hikers, snowmobilers and horseback riders. The valley is remote. In winter, temperature falls below freezing and more than 30 feet of snow falls on the highest mountains.
Last December, I got a call from my best friend, Monika Brown. "Two horses are trapped on Mount Kenshaw," Monika told me. "Some snowmobilers spotted them high on the mountain. They’re trapped in the snow and starving. Someone needs to get those horses down the mountain, or they'll die off there."
I've loved horses since I was a girl. The thought that two horses would freeze to death on a mountain was too much to bear. I jumped up. We must get there. They need someone who knows horses to look after them and feed them. I'll get in touch with my friends Sara and Matt. They're amazing snowmobilers."
Matt agreed right away to go up the mountain. After finding them, I covered the two horses with blankets and fed them with some hay personally. I was overjoyed. But then we faced an even bigger challenge. The horses were miles from the nearest road. We had to get the two horses out of the dangerous area before another snowstorm arrived.
Sara and Matt put forward a plan to dig a trench(沟) from the horse site to the nearest road, where we could walk them down the mountain. But just a handful of people waited on the scene. We spent the rest of the day digging and made a trench a few dozen meters long. At this rate it would take weeks to reach the road, about a kilometer away. A storm could blow up anytime. We needed more diggers. I sent out e-mails and made more phone calls to ask everyone I could think of for help.

Nowadays, more and more young people are becoming too proud and overconfident. They think they can do everything. So they simply ignore their old parents, and believe that their parents’ experienced thoughts are out of date. Actually, I used to be one of them, but after hearing a story told by my father, I changed my mind completely. Now I would like to share it with you.
Once upon a time, there lived a young man who looked down on the old very much for the simple reason that he always thought that the old were merely useless lives that were going to wither(凋谢) their busy life. Worse still, he also did this to his own father.
One day, it so happened that the father and the son met each other in the street. To the father’s surprise, the son suggested that they take a walk together. As they were walking, a beautiful garden with many a tree and flower in it came into their sight.
The son pointed to one of the prettiest flowers in the garden and said with great pride, "We young people are much like these fragrant flowers, so healthy, and full of spirit. But what about you oldsters? You are just like the falling leaves from the dying tree near here.”
Hearing this, the father smiled but said nothing. They continued the walking in silence. When they passed a grocery, the father stopped and went in. He bought walnuts(核桃) and showed one to his son, slowly saying, "We old people are like this walnut. It is evident that we've experienced many hard events in life. As a consequence, we've built up such a firm shell(壳) , and at the same time we’ve also built up a pure inner world. For this very reason every fruit is so full-grown."
"But every fruit was born by a flower,” argued the son impatiently.
"Yes, but not every flower can bear fruit," declared the father.

"What do you think about my audition(试奏) yesterday? My trill(颤音) should have been better, don’t you think?”Abbie asked Mel and closed the lid of her violin case before school.
“It’s no big deal, Abbie,” Mel said as they walked out the door. Mel didn’t have time to worry about her little sister’s mood. It turned out to be a busy day. She had a test in science class. She hit two home runs in softball. After school, she and her friends talked about their summer plans.
She forgot about the audition results until Abbie dragged her to the music room. Mel thought she'd probably be in the first violins.
Mel and Abbie found the list of names on the hoard. Abbie. Concertmaster. Abbie screamed, "I can’t believe it!" "I can’t wait to tell Mum and Dad!" Abbie rushed toward home. Mel kept reading. Mel. Second violins. What? There had to be some mistake. She’d figure out tomorrow.
When Mel got home, Abbie was playing her audition piece there. Music poured from Abbie5s bow like water from a teapot 一 pure and perfect. And the trill sounded like a bird singing. Abbie was good 一 really good 一 but that wasn’t the point. "Mr. Benson must have made a mistake,” Mel thought.
The next morning, Mel slipped into the music room. Gathering her courage, Mel said, "Mr. Benson, I want to talk to you about the orchestra (管弦乐队) seats."
"Yes — you must be proud of your sister," Mr. Benson smiled. "Abbie is a rare student. If she continues to practice hard and grow as a musician, she could become a professional. Then we’ll look back on our little orchestra and think about how lucky we were."

One possible version:
Tom noticed the flame was reaching up. Frozen with fear, he stood rooted to the spot. He comprehended the gravity of the situation and held Jane’s hand tightly. By then, both of them were coughing and their eyes were stinging. Time seemed to stand still, though they were probably there for only two or three minutes. Tom begged Jane to run for safety as quickly as possible. Jane tried to shield her nose from the choking smoke and shook her head. She kept pounding against the door. Tom burst out crying.
Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help. A sense of strength immediately replaced the mounting fear and anxiety in Jane’s mind. She told them Ms. Makcik must be still in the room. They forced the door open with all their might. Sure enough, Makcik was lying in bed, unconscious. She was carried downstairs and then rushed to the hospital, where she finally came to herself. People in the neighborhood felt relieved and Jane and Tom’s joy was immense.

Every day after school, Reuben started his plan. Cold and hungry, Reuben walked in the streets, looking for the nail bags carefully. To save more money, he even decided to send papers to people in the early morning. Although he felt tired, he still stuck to the plan. It was the brooch in the shop window that made him full of energy. After a long time of hard work, he made it finally.
Paragraph 2:
Finally the time came! He took out the soda tin, poured the coins out and began to count. Five dollars! He made it! Holding the soda tin in his hand, Reuben rushed to the shop to buy the brooch. Speechless and happy, she held her son tightly in her arms, with tears in her eyes.

Paragraph 1:
The ten-year-old me was persuaded by my teacher's words. The feeling of telling my beloved story to someone else lighted a spark of anticipation in my little chest. So after what seemed to be ages, harsh words from the above of my head suddenly disappeared. An urge of begging for my mother's permission got more and more uncontrollable. Eventually, I bravely raised my head, fearlessly looked into her eyes, and earnestly pleaded, "Mom, please! I just want to have a try."
Paragraph 2:
Apparently surprised by my response, my mother looked as if she was close to another outburst — but she only sighed. I interpreted that as her agreement. Soon I started working with my English teacher day and night to hunt for a story,to illustrate the details, and to practice my facial expressions and gestures in front of the mirror. On the day of the competition, I went on the stage for the very first time in my life. Nervous as I was, I still finished my story. Although I only got the third prize at that time, I thank my teacher and my mother for letting me take a road that I have never taken before.

Paragraph 1:
The old man jumped back as if he had been bitten, and the blood rushed to his face. "Excuse me," he said, with more dignity than I would have thought considering his appearance, "I do not believe I have the pleasure of knowing you. Undoubtedly you have mistaken me for someone else." And with a quick decision he turned to the salesgirl and said in a loud voice, "Kindly pack up this one here for me. I will take it with me." He pointed at one of the largest and most expensive puddings.
Paragraph 2:
The salesgirl took down the pudding from its stand and started to parcel it up. Meanwhile, the elderly gentleman pulled out a worn little pocketbook and began counting out shillings and pennies on the counter. To save his "honor" he was forced into a purchase which he could not possibly afford. How I longed for the power to take back my insensitive words! It was too late though, and I felt that the kindest thing I could do now would be walk away. And that was the last time I saw or heard of him. Now he can never go there to taste puddings any more.

Familiar smells of the earth rose up to greet her. Some things never change, Ally thought. Quickening her pace, she hurried to the rock by the stream where she and her father used to sit and eat lunch. She sat on it, with her face toward the sun. Overhead the sky was filled with birds busily diving to gather dried grass to place in their nests. Their sweet songs echoed throughout the woods. Ally felt content for the first time in a long while. She could almost hear her father's laughter in the gentle breeze as she listened for the sweet song of the special bird. All too soon, the sun disappeared behind thick gray clouds.
Paragraph 2:
Determined to start out again the next mornings she was about to head home when ringing birdsong floated down to her. It was prettier than any she had heard before. An excited feeling bubbled up inside Ally as she searched the sky. A flash of orange dashed down and rested on a nearby branch. For a moment Ally couldn't believe her eyes, but it was true. The tiny wood warbler just sat there, looking around, as if it was waiting for something. Ally blinked back tears. "Thanks, Dad," she whispered slowly lifting her camera and taking careful aim. "Things will be different without you. I'll always miss our times together, but I feel better now."

What the father said touched the son greatly. It occurred to him that in fact he should try to be a flower that could bear fruit and he should also be aware that his parents weren't useless lives or falling leaves but experienced walnuts, masterpieces of nature. In reality, they were the ones young people should appreciate forever. How he regretted what he had thought and done for the elderly, his father included as well! Being so proud of himself made him ashamed.
Paragraph 2:
From then on, the young man has turned over a new leaf. He stopped being proud and ignoring the old. On the contrary, he looked up to oldsters greatly, willing to accept their suggestions at any time. As a consequence, the old gradually changed their opinions about him. In addition, he got along well with his father and was ready to share his happiness and sorrow with him whenever possible. So pleased was his father with it that he smiled every time and took great pride in his son's changes.

Mel froze as there wasn't any mix-up. She realized she was the one who'd made a mistake. Her little sister had earned the first chair through efforts 一 and she hadn’t even congratulated her. Mel walked down the hall. Most days, she spent her time thinking about softball, her classes and her friends. Every day was so full that she didn't always practice her violin while Abbie played every day. Determined to make a change, Mel decided to have a talk with Abbie.
Paragraph 2:
After school, Mel found Abbie on a bench outside, playing the violin. Mel made up her mind to apologize to Abbie after a brief inner struggle. She cleared her throat and started, ” I’m so proud that you're concertmaster. I’m sorry I’ve been so mean. I guess I was jealous." Abbie was surprised. “But you're popular, Mel. You get better grades. You’re better at sports. You can do everything." Mel shook her head. "I can't make a trill like you can." "You can if you keep practicing." Abbie smiled and asked if Mel would like to play with her. Mel agreed delightedly.

To save more money, he even decided to send papers to people in the early morning. Although he felt tired, he still stuck to the plan. It was the brooch in the shop window that made him full of energy. After a long time of hard work, he made it finally.
Paragraph 2:

You get better grades. You’re better at sports. You can do everything." Mel shook her head. "I can't make a trill like you can." "You can if you keep practicing." Abbie smiled and asked if Mel would like to play with her. Mel agreed delightedly.
