初中英语牛津译林版八年级上册Unit 5 Wild animals一课一练
展开A
When I was a kid in Minnesta, watermeln was expensive. One f my father's friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, wh wned a large stre in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelns arrived, Bernie wuld call. Dad and I wuld g t Bernie's place. We' d sit n the edge f the dck(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and gt ready fr a big meal.
Bernie wuld take his knife, cut ur first watermeln, hand us bth a big piece and sit dwn next t us. Then we'd bury ur faces in watermeln, eating nly the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, mst seed-free part—and thrw away the rest.
Bernie was my father's idea f a rich man. I always thught it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was nt Bernie's wealth itself but his way f dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew hw t stp wrking, get tgether with friends and eat nly the heart f the watermeln.
What I learned frm Bernie is that being rich is a state f mind. Sme f us, n matter hw much mney we have, will never be free enugh t eat nly the heart f the watermeln. If yu dn't take the time t dangle yur feet ver the dck and enjy life's small pleasure, yur wrk is prbably hurting yur life.
Fr many years, I frgt that lessn I'd learned as a kid n the lading dck. I was t busy making all the mney I culd.
Well, I've relearned it. I hpe I have time left t enjy the success f thers and t take pleasure in the day. That's the heart f the watermeln. I have learned again t thrw the rest away.

When the Audet family turns n the lights at Blue Farm, they are using electricity that cmes frm cws—cw manure (粪肥), t be specific.
Cws prduce a lt f wastes. One cw can create 30 gallns f wastes each day. Nw imagine the utput f ver 1,000 cws at Blue Farm. That's really a big amunt.
When farmers clean their barns, they put the wastes in a big heap, and spread sme f them n their fields fr fertilizer(肥料). But nw places like Blue Spruce Farm have a new way f using cw wastes. They use them t prduce electricity.
Here's hw it wrks: A big machine mves back and frth cleaning the barn flr. “The cws aren't bthered,” says Marie Audet. “They are animals f habit; they get used t it, and just lift ne ft and then anther t let it g by.”
The machine pushes the manure int a big 600-galln tank like a small swimming pl. The tank is called a digester (化粪池) because what happens there is just like what happens inside a cw: Bacteria(细菌) get t wrk and cntinue t digest the manure.
Methane gas (甲烷、沼气)in the atmsphere is knwn as a “greenhuse” gas because it keeps heat just like a greenhuse des, causing ur planet t warm up. That's an envirnmental cncern. But the digester has a gd result. Its gas is kept and used t pwer electric generatrs (发电机).
