Paris is the city of dreams. If you plan to head to Paris for a study period, then perhaps a little reality check is in order. But my experience was a romantic one.

I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program. On arrival in Paris, I was constantly reminded of the official processes I had to complete forms to be filled in, meetings to attend, the list seemed endless.

Then the real work began. Once classes were underway, I found myself volunteering to do oral presentations and assignments first, rather than last. This method proved to be very helpful.

Once I had finished class for the week, I had an ever-increasing list of museums to visit, neighborhoods to explore, and cafes to sit in. Read books about Paris. Talk to locals and other foreigners living there. But the one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot. The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy that I experience in Paris as an exchange student.

After spending five months wandering through the charming neighborhoods, I fell in love with the atmosphere that came out from every open door, and with every spoken word. There is something comforting about walking to the market each Sunday to enjoy the beautiful display of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. There is warmth in saying bon jour to the passers-by.

On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, " Bonjour Monsieur," as I passed the little store down the street. I guess the best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. And I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.

    24. What does the underlined word "ecstasy" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A. Courage. B. Happiness. C. Imagination. D. Reputation.

    25. What does the passage mainly tell us?

    A. A traveling experience. B. An exchange program

    C. Charming neighborhoods. D. An exchange student's life.

    26. Beyond reading books, which experience would the author treasure most?

    A. Hanging around in Paris. B. Buying vegetables in the market

    C. Enjoying coffee in his spare time. D. Greeting people in French in the street.

    27. According to the passage, what left the author the deepest impression?

    A. The presentations he did in class.

    B. The friendly people he met in Paris.

    C. The special culture he experienced in the city.

    D. The academic achievement he made in his study.

    C

US author Henry Rollins once wrote: “Loneliness adds beauty to life. It puts a special burn on sunsets and makes night air smell better. Indeed, in the eyes of artists, loneliness never seems to go out of style. There are paintings that portray loneliness, songs that are inspired by loneliness, and many works of literature that center around this theme.

In the eyes of UK economist Rachel Reeves, however, loneliness is far from romantic. Instead, it’s a "giant evil" that's become a serious problem in the country.

So just how serious is it? On Jan 17, UK Prime Minister Theresa May appointed politician Tracey Crouch as the country's very first "Minister for Loneliness". Her job is to tackle 处理the loneliness that the country's been feelinga problem which, according to UK government research, is affecting more than 9 million people in the country, and is more harmful to one's physical and mental health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

And the problem hasn't just appeared recently. Back in 2014, the UK was given the title of the ^loneliness capital of Europe" by The Telegraph. A survey carried out by the newspaper found that British people were less likely to get to know their neighbors or build strong relationships with people than those from other European countries.

"There is something about British wanting to deal with problems themselves," Christian Guy, director of the Centre for Social Justice think-tank 智囊团,told The Telegraph.

But this doesn't mean that the problem only affects Britons. In fact, we're all suffering from loneliness now more than ever, in spite of most of the world now having access to the internet, which has enabled us to be more connected than ever.

What we need, according to Kim Lead better, sister of the late UK politician Jo Cox, is to have "proper human connections". "Our lives nowadays are so busy. We spend the vast majority of our time on our phones, on our laptops. We need to press pause on that and actually sit down and speak to human beings," Lead better said at an event last year.

But the first steps toward fighting this problem are to accept its existence and not be a — shamed  or intimidated 吓倒by it. After all, without loneliness, many beautiful paintings, songs, and literary works wouldn't even exist. And "evil" or not, being lonely is simply part of the experience of being human.

    28. What can we learn about the UK's loneliness problem?

    A. The UK became the loneliest country in the world in 2014.

    B. More than half of British people suffer from loneliness.

    C. The government is working to solve the problem.

    D. British people communicate less with their neighbors than ever.

    29. According to the text, social loneliness .

    A. has become a problem worldwide

    B. didn't attract the public's attention until recently

    C. is mainly caused by the wide use of the Internet

    D. does more harm mentally than physically

    30. What does Lead better suggest doing to deal with loneliness?

    A. Making more phone calls to our friends.

    B. Stopping the use of electronic products.

    C. Interacting with the people around us face to face more often.

    D. Accepting its existence calmly.

    31. Which of the following would the author probably agree with?

    A. Loneliness is a giant evil of society.

    B. Only artists can appreciate the beauty of loneliness.

    C. It is hard to find a solution to social loneliness.

    D. Loneliness is just a normal part of our life.

    D

Do you think alien beings exist somewhere in the universe? It seems like Mars, our closest neighbor, has inspired the most science fiction as the place where aliens are most likely to come from. Recent Mars probes 探测have shown us that there is no life on that planetat least not now. But that does not mean that life does not exist elsewhereafter all, the universe is really big. A lot of scientific research is going on in the search for “extraterrestrial life".

Think about it——why should the seven billion people on this little planet be the only living beings in the universe? It would, in fact, seem logical that this is not the case. So scientific research in this matter is based around the idea of finding other planets that have environments that can support life ——environments similar to the Earth. The search is on for the evidence of the existence, or earlier existence of  life from very wise beings to simple organisms 有机物).

So far, there have been a number of theories as to which planetary bodies may have an atmosphere that can support such life and therefore deserve closer attention. As for places within our own Milky Way Galaxy, it has been assumed over the decades that Mars and Venus, as well as some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, may have been hosts for life. Now, as technologies have improved and we can obtain measurements of the composition of the atmosphere on extrasolar planets, the chances of finding "alien" life forms are increasing.

There has been a theory that some of the planets in the habitable zone of the red dwarf star Gliese 581 may be able to support life. In2007, scientists discovered exoplanet Gliese 581c——and felt that its atmosphere was most suitable for supporting life. But further research revealed that it would not. Now, attention has been turned to Gliese 581d, at the outer edge of the star's habitable zone. The main standards for deciding whether a planetary body can be life-supporting are atmospheric conditions which allow the existence of water. Gliese 581 is about 20. 4 light years away from the Earth, so even if life does exist there, the distance would mean that communication would be unlikely.

Having said thiswho says alien life forms (if they exist) need water?

    32. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A. Life existing outside of the Earth. B. The evidence of the existence of life.

    C. Other faraway planets in the universe. D. Creatures known from science fictions.

    33. What makes it possible for people to find "alien beings”

    A. Modern scientific theories. B. Atmospheric conditions.

    C. Environments similar to the Earth. D. Advanced technologies.

    34. From the passage, we know that .

    A. the atmosphere of Gliese 581c was most suitable for life

    B. it is not certain whether alien life forms need water or not

    C. the 7 billion people on the Earth are the only beings in the universe

    D. the distance of 20. 4 light years makes it impossible to find life on Gliese 581d

    35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

    A. Do Aliens Exist? B. Is Mars Suitable for Life?

    C. Are Alien Life Forms Various? D. Can We Communicate with Aliens?
