It is early in the morning and I've hardly caught any shuteye. My breakfast of eggs，bread and strong coffee will keep me awake and alert before lunch.After lunch，I will face an afternoon of yawning in the office.Sometimes I feel uneasy about this situation but I am sure that I am not alone，for it is not too much to say that we all seem to be yawning more often.Are we turning into a generation of insomniacs (患失眠症的人)? How is modern life influencing our sleep patterns?

We can start by blaming the light bulb and other forms of manmade light.Experts say that on average people go to bed and wake up two hours later than the previous generation.Then，there are the computers.Research led by Professor Charles Czeisler of Harvard Medical School has shown that people who read electronic books before going to bed take longer time to fall asleep.They have lower levels of melatonin，a chemical which controls our body clock.And they're less active in the morning.Professor Czeisler said，“In the past 50 years，there has been a decrease in average sleep length and quality.Since more people are choosing electronic devices for reading，communication and entertainment，especially teenagers who already experience serious sleep loss，research on the longterm influence of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed.”

So the first thing to do if you want to have a restful night is leave computers out of the bedroom.The earlier you get your fingers off the keyboard，the sooner you tend to fall asleep.Avoid alcohol，as it might reduce our cycles of the “rapid eye movement” sleep，when our brains process the information we have received during the day.It prevents our brain activity going well.And do not eat nuts or cheese in the evening.

After that，if you still cannot sleep，start counting sheep.Maybe that is the best way to avoid another afternoon of yawning in the office.

Many economic problems will be caused by global warming，especially if we wait to address the issue.The change in climate makes already drought areas grow drier with the heat.This affects agriculture in a negative way.If the ground is too dry，farmers will have a hard time preparing the soil in order to produce good crops.Dry soil doesn't allow grass to grow effectively.Without the nutritious grass needed for grazing(放牧)and with the additional problem of heat stress，many farm animals may become sick，causing farmers even more expenses.

Another economic problem caused by global warming involves cooling systems.According to Jeff Spross，the constant warming of the earth will result in greater efforts to reduce heat in public places and to cool down homes.The energy it takes to keep buildings cool will cost over $200 a year per person.The increased temperature of the earth can also cause heat strokes and exhaustion in humans，making it nearly impossible for people to work outside.This will lower the labor productivity because many occupations，such as park ranger，mailman，landscape architect and farmer，require outdoor activities.

As discussed briefly above，global warming can destroy land.Global warming is not just a slight problem—it's fatal.Instead of waiting and allowing the problem to get worse，we need to take action against global warming immediately.

They were all lefthanded along with other famous people including Brad Pitt，Prince William，and Barack Obama.In fact，an estimated 13 percent of the world's population may be lefthanded.

Many researchers claim to have found relationships between lefthandedness and various physical and mental characteristics，such as blond hair，blue eyes，and sleep difficulties.Other studies have found a higherthannormal level of lefthanded people in certain occupations (职业)，including professional baseball players，architects，as well as prisoners.However，some of these connections are very weak，and others have not been proven.

What makes a person become righthanded rather than lefthanded？One simple idea suggests that people normally get righthandedness from their parents.Studies have found that two righthanded parents have only a 9.5percent chance of having a lefthanded child，while two lefthanded parents have a 26percent chance of having a lefthanded child.Another common theory is that lefthanded people suffer mild brain damage during birth，which makes them lefthanded.

Whatever the reasons behind it，people's attitudes toward lefthandedness have changed a lot over the years.Statistics show that although 13 percent of young people are lefthanded，only six percent of the elderly are lefthanded.Lefthanded children used to be punished until they began using their right hand like other children，but today people who are lefthanded are no longer looked down on nor are they considered abnormal.For most people today，either case is perfectly acceptable.There are even a number of shops now selling products for lefthanded people，such as lefthanded can openers，guitars，and even a lefthanded camera.
