    I have been studying the French language, with sme cnsistency, fr three years. This field f study has been, all at nce, the hardest and mst rewarding f my life. I wuld put it abve the study f writing simply because I started writing as a 6­year­ld by under my mther's guidance. I always “felt” I culd write. I did nt always “feel” I culd effectively study a freign language.
    But here I am, right nw, in a Mntreal htel. I mishear wrds. I cnfuse tenses. I can't really use the subjunctive. Yet.
    Smething has happened t me and the smething is this—I have gtten better. I dn't knw when I first felt it. I didn't feel it this summer at Middlebury, despite the difference in my entrance and exit scres. I didn't feel it when I first arrived in Paris in January. I felt, as I always feel, like I was stumbling arund in the dark. I still feel like that. But I als feel like I am getting better at stumbling.
    I am emphasizing hw I “feel” because, when studying, it is as imprtant as any bjective reality. Hpelessness feeds the fatigue that leads the student t quit. It is nt the study f language that is hard, s much as the “feeling” that yur present level is wh yu are and wh yu will always be. I remember returning frm France at the end f the summer f 2013, and being cnvinced that I had sme kind f brain injury which prevented me frm hearing French vwel sunds. But the real enemy was nt any injury s much as the “feeling” f despair. That is why I ignre all the research abut children and their language advantage. I dn't want t hear it. I just dn't care. As CarlynFrché wuld say—“I'm ging t have it.”
    T “have it”, I must manage my emtinal health. Part f that lng­term management—beynd French—is giving myself an pprtunity t get better at difficult things. There is abslutely nthing in this wrld like the feeling f sucking at smething and then imprving at it.
