How did I find the strength to even breathe. much less walk, talk or live, after the death of my 15-year-old son from an accident two years ago? My mother is the short and long answer.
My beautiful, blue-eyed, blond-haired son, bright, athletic, loving, popular , lost his Own life, and my life as J knew it went with him. I was blindsided. The intense grief and extreme pain were unbearable and still are at times. But that is another story. This story is about my mother who. although she died two years before my son. was and is my strongest pillar.
My mother was born in 1924 and, from one perspective, was one of the lucky ones during the Great Depression. Her father was an assistant district lawyer, so she grew up with food on the table, decent clothes and a warm apartment to live in.
She married my father, a heart surgeon, shortly after World War Ⅱ . They moved to Pittsburgh in 1958 and raised six children in Fox Chapel, ending up with 15 grandchildren by the time they celebrated their 60th anniversary a few weeks before she died at age 86.
As a mother and spouse, she was remarkable. Taking my father's long, stressful hours at General Hospital into account, she was in charge of everything——finances, school schedules, housework, discipline. She was also involved in volunteer activities for the hospital and American Heart Association.
Dealing with things in a practical way, she managed to attend her children's many activities with enthusiasm and still make time to sit with my father when he got home long after the dinner hour. She would listen to his day's events devotedly, and she rarely complained about his long hours or her many responsibilities.
Often doubled over in fits of laughter at the dinner table, she had a great sense of humor and was infamous for having quiet laugh attacks during Sunday mass. She loved to read and was addicted to her daily crossword puzzles. J loved all these things about my mother and sought to imitate her as a young woman.

Our friendship runs back to our college days when I first met Rishi. We had our own share “ first impression about each other. Mine was—she's a lovely, charming and full of life personality. Hers was—I look like an arrogant personality. I don't blame her for this. Many of my close friends had the same view when they first met me. Blame it on my bitch face and me being a shy person to some extent.
We became really close within a short period of time. Ours was group of four people divided into 2 each during our final year when we both chose advertising as our specialization and the other two journalism. Back then, I was a regular user of BBM messenger and hardly used Whatsapp.
On one specific occasion, we had really bad argument about a failed project. The usual blame game was on. We decided to put it past us and focus on our studies. During this time, she once handed me her phone to show me a picture. While I was going through that, I came across a message from a particular Whatsapp group that comprises of her and my other two friends. I asked her permission to view the group. She had a blank expression on her face. But she allowed me to go ahead.
I was in shock while going through their messages. Not really positive things were said about me in particular. It shook me. Because these were the people. I considered my friends. I broke down in front of her. She apologised. But I felt cheated on. I told her about my decision of not wanting to continue this friendship further. We both missed each other. But neither of us wanted to give the last try.

Just after New Year's, before school vacation ended. I went out for a walk. It was a walk I’d been meaning to take ever since we moved to the house.
I took my camera- the first time I'd taken my camera out since we came to the country- and went, dressed in my down jacket and wearing heavy boots. I walked toward the seemingly abandoned house that I could see across the fields from the upstairs window.
A truck was parked at the end of the road, beside a tiny weather-beaten house. There was smoke coming out of the chimney, and curtains in the two little windows on either side of the door. A dog was in the yard, who barked when he saw me coming. And beside the truck-no, actually in the truck, or at least with his head inside it, was a man.
“Hi," I called. It would have been silly to turn around and start walking home without saying anything, even though I've promised my parents all my life that I would never talk to strange men.
He lifted out his head, a gray head, smiled-a nice smile-and said, "Miss Chalmers. I'm glad you've come to visit."
“Meg," I said. I was puzzled. How did he know who I was?
"For Margaret?" he asked, coming over and shaking my hand." Forgive me. My hands are very dirty. My battery dies in this cold weather."
"How did you know my name was Chalmers?"
He wiped his hands on a towel that was hanging from the door handle of the truck."My dear, I apologize. I have not even introduced myself. My name is Will Banks. And it's much too cold to stand out here. Your feet must be frozen, even in those boots. Come inside, and I'll make us each a cup of tea. And I'll tell you how I know your name.”
I stood unmoved. He saw me hesitate, and smiled. "Meg," he said, “I'm seventy years old. Completely harmless, even to a beautiful young girl like you. Come on in and keep me company for a bit, and get warm."
I laughed, because he knew what I was thinking, and very few people ever know what I'm thinking. Then I went in his house.

Tyler was enrolled in my senior class for a semester. He had impulse-control(克制冲动) and anger management issues. He had been suspended (停课) many times in previous years. When he entered my class, I assumed the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked in the front of the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a glib (未经思考的) answer. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at the least motivate them to sit quietly and attentively. By contrast, Tyler was just loud and offensive.
He had been in so much trouble through the years. He expected his teachers to know about his referrals(移交) where he was sent to the office, and suspensions, where he was given compulsory days to stay out of school. I had rarely found referrals to be effective because students would return from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking while I was teaching. In the middle of the lesson, I said in the same tone of voice, "Tyler, why don't you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?" With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can't remember what he said other than that he included several impolite words. I sent Tyler to the office with a discipline referral, and he received a week's out-of-school suspension.
To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler's anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was out of school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.
On the day of Tyler's return, I stood at the door awaiting him._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At first glance she looked like any other old woman, plodding along in the snow, alone, neglected, head bowed. A young couple, smiling, talking, laughing, arms loaded with Christmas presents, took no notice of the old woman. A mother with two small children hurried by, on their way to grandmother's house. Like many others, they took no notice, either. If these people had noticed, they would have seen that the old woman wore no shoes. She walked bare foot in the ice and snow.
With both hands the old woman gathered her worn button-less overcoat at the collar to keep out the wind. She stopped and stood bent and bowed at the bus stop. A red and blue scarf covering her head, she waited for the downtown bus.
A gentleman carrying an important looking briefcase waited near her, not too closely. After all, she could have something contagious(传染的). A teenage girl also waited for the bus. She glanced repeatedly at the old woman's feet, but said nothing.
The bus arrived and the old woman slowly, painfully boarded. She sat on the sideways seat just behind the driver. The gentleman and the teenage girl hurried to the back of the bus. A little boy pointed at the old woman, “Look, Mother, that old lady is bare foot.” The embarrassed mother slapped his hand down. “Don't point at people, Andrew. It's not polite to point.” She looked out of the window.
“She must have sons or daughters,” a lady in a fur coat suggested, “her children should be ashamed of themselves.” She felt morally superior, because she took good care of her mother.
A man seated near the middle of the bus steadied the bag of gifts on her lap. “Don't we pay enough taxes to handle situations like this?” he said to a friend seated beside him.
“People have to learn to save their money,” a well-dressed young college man added. “If that old woman had saved when she was young, she wouldn't be suffering now. It's her own fault.”
And all these vain(虚荣的) people beamed with satisfaction that they had all given such deep analysis, totally ignoring the old woman who badly needed a pair of shoes immediately.

答案以及解析
1.答案:
My mother never complained. While she experienced great joy in her life, she had also lived through and recovered from tremendous grief. When my mother was a young girl, her mother died of cancer. Then after high school her closest childhood girlfriend died of an accident. Next, her father died shortly after she graduated from college, and she had to move in with her brother’s family. She came to adore her brother, who became a second father to her, but he died at age 50. And years later came the death of her dear son, my brother, a heart surgeon with a wonderful family he left behind. She accepted them with grace.
But after experiencing the loss of my son, I found myself leaning on a different kind of person with the sense of self-worth and believing deeply in God’s love, whom my mother had been the typical example of. Through my mother’s example I have come to terms with the death of my son. Thank mom’s greatest gift teaching me to overcome grief with love and wisdom, I found my pillar of strength.
2.答案:
Para 1:
Then come the Rajasthan IV trip which was our official last trip. I hanged out with my other friends while she with the other two girls. I wasn't enjoying this trip al all, which she could make out. When she saw me approaching the common washroom, she followed me in and shalt the door. I didn't know how to react. She gave me a tight hug and broke down. My tears were also out of control. We knew we both wanted to be in each other's company. We promised to grow mature and let it not affect our friendship.
Para 2:
It's been almost 7 years after graduation since we picked up our friendship. She's one of the few people I really count on in my life. She's been with me through all my struggles, helping me constantly to grow into a better individual. So have I. The only learning from our relationship is—if someone is meant to be in your life, they will ensure they stay around some way or the other. Willingness to keep a relationship should come from both the sides.
3.答案:
He took my jacket and hung it up with his, and poured tea into two thick pottery mugs. He reminisced about a rainy night 16 years ago, when my parents took me, two years old then, to a countryside excursion. Unfortunately, the pouring rain cornered us to the same small cottage and almost unbelievably to the same table Will and I were now sharing. “Your blue eyes and forehead beauty spot haven't changed much, though.” Will beamed. I giggled at his humor and we continued to catch upon how my family was doing in the past 16 years. (80 words)
It's nice to have a new friend, like Will. He proves more than harmless, but humorous, kind-hearted and exuberant. We often hang out (under my parents' permission and even company, though) in his large, rusty but otherwise robust truck. He acquainted me with other villagers, some of whom even invited me to their families' anniversaries and ceremonies. I picked up the local language, customs and rituals, perfectly fitting into life in this new country, which, now, for me, has become a new home away from home. (77 words)
解析:
这篇读后续写一定要看清楚伏笔,第一是第二段的since we came to the country, 第二个是 abandoned house, 第三个是70多岁的Will Banks, 有辆卡车,有个老的小木屋,第四个是beautiful young girl.
4.答案:
On the day of Tyler's return, I stood at the door awaiting him. At last he came, with his hands in his pockets. I went up to him and said hello. I wanted to break the ice. I asked him to talk to me for a moment. Taylor seemed reluctant at first, but finally agreed. I told him I was eager to start over with him. At the same time, I told him that if he couldn't control himself sometimes in class, he could step out of the door for a while to collect himself.
A spark of surprise flashed across his face. He was stunned there, staring at me with wide eyes. But it was always pleasant to be believed in. He made up his mind that he had the power to choose his own way of behaving. From then on, Taylor listened carefully and took an active part in class. He spared every minute to study. At the end of the year, Tyler wrote me a thank-you note telling me how great his year had been. I still have that note today, and it moves me to reread it when I'm stressed about teaching.
5.答案:
A vain businessman felt offended by those talking without acting and reached into his wallet. Having taken out a crisp twenty-dollar bill, he strode proudly down the aisle and pressed the bill into the old woman's unsteady, wrinkled hand. “Here, Madam, get yourself some shoes.” The old woman nodded her head in thanks, full of surprise and gratitude, with tears rolling down her cheeks. The businessman strode back to his seat, feeling pleased with himself that he was a man of action. Everyone in the bus fell into absolute silence.
At the next stop, a young man wearing expensive, new, brand-name shoes boarded the bus. As the young man's glance caught the old woman's bare feet, he bent down and began to untie and remove his shoes. He knelt down before the old woman. “Madam, I see you have no shoes. Well, I have shoes.” Carefully, gently, he lifted the old woman's crusty feet in his hands. He put his fine shoes on the old woman's feet. A wave of warmth overtook the woman. Just then the bus arrived at the next stop. The young man left the bus and walked away, bare foot in the snow.
