By the early 1960s, Americans were becming aware f the effects f pllutin n the envirnment. Rachel Carsn's 1962 bestseller Silent Spring pinted ut the dangerus effects f pesticides(杀虫剂) n the American cuntryside. Later in the decade, a 1969 fire n Cleveland's Cuyahga River shed light n the prblem f chemical waste dispsal. Until that time, prtecting the planet's natural resurces was nt part f the natinal plitical plan. Only a small prtin f the American ppulatin was familiar with envirnmental issues—let alne practiced recycling.
Elected t the U.S. Senate in 1962, Senatr(参议员) Gaylrd Nelsn was determined t cnvince the federal gvernment that the planet was at risk. In the fall f 1969, Nelsn, cnsidered ne f the leaders f the mdern envirnmental mvements, annunced the Earth Day cncept at a cnference in Seattle and invited the entire natin t get invlved. Earth Day kicked ff the envirnmental decade with a bang, as Senatr Nelsn later put it. During the 1970s, a number f imprtant envirnmental laws were passed, such as the Clean Air Act, the Water Quality Imprvement Act and the Endangered Species Act. Tday we knw Antarctica as an extreme envirnment cntaining ice and snw. But new research prvides evidence that the area had a rainfrest in the past.
The researchers cllected a piece f Earth sediment(沉淀物) frm under the seaflr ff the cast f Antarctica. In the sediment, they discvered frest material that was estimated t be abut 90 millin years ld. This wuld have been in the Cretaceus Perid, when dinsaurs were the main land animals. The sediment was remved by scientists n the research icebreaker RV Plarstern in the Amundsen Sea near Pine Island Glacier.
Jhann Klages is a gelgist with the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmhltz Center fr Plar and Marine Research in Germany. He was the lead writer f a study n the findings, published in the jurnal Nature. He said the sediment was cllected frm a depth f abut 30 meters belw the cean flr. Klages said an examinatin shwed that the material didn't frm in the cean.
The researchers estimate that the area—abut 900 kilmeters frm the Suth Ple—had average yearly temperatures f abut 12 t 13 degrees Celsius. During the warmest summer mnths, average temperatures likely reached between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. The sil included fine dirt particles(颗粒) and hard clay, as well as substances linked t at least 65 different kinds f plants, the study fund. Klages added that the plants included trees, ferns and flwering plants. While n animal remains were fund, Klages said there were likely dinsaurs, flying reptiles(爬行动物) and many insects in the envirnment.

The sil in the sediment dates back t the planet's warmest perid f the past 140 millin years, with sea level abut 170 meters higher than tday. The researchers said that the rainfrest envirnment in Antarctica was especially surprising because each year, the area experiences a fur-mnth plar night when there is n sunlight t fuel plant life. Klages said n ice sheets were present during the time, but seasnal snwfall was likely.

    A. By cllecting data n climate.
    B. By researching special plants.
    C. By explring ice in Antarctica.
    D. By analyzing the Earth sediment.
    13. What did the researchers say abut the sediment?
    A. Its material develped in the cean.
    B. Its material frmed n the land.
    C. It dates back t cld times in Antarctica.
    D. It cntained different animal remains.
    14. What des the authr indicate in the last paragraph?

    B. Seasnal snwfall made the frest disappear.
    C. Antarctica's natural envirnment has changed greatly.
    D. Plar nights in Antarctica are getting shrter than befre.
    15. What is the main idea f the text?
    A. Antarctica is getting warmer like befre.
    B. Varius wildlife nce existed in Antarctica.
