Autmated essay grading was first prpsed in the 1960s, but cmputers back then were nt up t the task. In the late 1990s, as technlgy imprved, several textbk and testing cmpanies jumped int the field. Tday, cmputers are used t grade essays in Suth Dakta's student writing assessments and a handful f ther exams, including the TOEFL test f English fluency, taken by freign students.
The Hewlett cntest aims t shw that cmputers can grade as well as English teachers—nly much mre quickly and withut all that depressing red ink. “Autmated essay scring is bjective,” Shermis said. “And it can be dne immediately. The paper, published this March inPsychlgy and Aging, examined health and welfare surveys frm rughly 40,000 Germans between ages 18 and 96.The surveys were cnducted every year frm 1993 t 2003.
