Career success could be predicted as early as kindergarten, according to a 20-year study recently published in the American journal Public Health.
Researchers from Pennsylvania State University and Duke University tracked more than 700 children from across the US between kindergarten and aged 25 and found a significant connection between their social skills as kindergarteners and their success as adults two decades later.
In the research, teachers assessed how the kindergarteners interacted with each other socially using a range of criteria like whether they cooperate with their peers without being encouraged, whether they’re helpful to others, whether they’re good at understanding feelings, and whether they can solve problems on their own.
Researchers then kept track of whether the students go on to graduate from high school on time, get a college degree, and find and keep a full-time job by 25. They also monitored the participants’ involvement with crime, drug abuse, public assistance, and mental health issues.
The results showed that socially capable children are far more likely to earn a college degree and have a full-time job by 25 than those with limited social skills. Those with limited social skills also have a higher chance of getting arrested, binge drinking, and applying for public housing.
“This study shows that helping children develop social and emotional skills is one of the most important things we can do to prepare them for a healthy future,” said Kristin Schubert, program director at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which funded the research, in a release. “From an early age, these skills can determine whether a child goes to college or prison, and whether they end up employed or addicted. ”
The good news, according to Damon Jones, lead author of the study, is that intervention (干预) at a young age can help improve social and emotional skills.
“This research by itself doesn’t prove that higher social ability can lead to better outcomes later on, ” he said. “But when combined with other research, it is clear that helping children develop these skills increases their chances of success in school, work, and life. ”
24. What did the 20-year study find?
A. Social skills play a key role in children’s development.
B. Helpful children understand others’ feelings better.
C. Most kindergarteners can solve problems alone.
D. Outgoing children cooperate with their peers easily.
25. What are Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. When the researchers began their study.
B. How the researchers conducted the study.
C. How long it took to complete the study.
D. What factors were studied by the researchers.
26. What should parents do to help their children to succeed according to Kristin Schubert?
A. Teach them some basic living skills.
B. Tell them to keep off alcohol.
C. Coach them in their lessons.
D. Teach them how to cooperate with others.
27. According to the passage, it is probably intended for _______.
A. teenagers B. doctors
C. educators D. general readers

Children are starting on digital devices at ever younger ages, and opinions on the effects of children’s digital-media habits are deeply polarized (两极分化的).
Jean Twenge, a psychology professor, thinks excessive use of the Internet and social media makes children lonely and depressed and poses serious risks to their physical and particularly their mental health, sometimes to the point of driving them to suicide.
However, Daniel Kardefelt-Winther of the Innocenti research office of Unicef examined various evidence and found less cause for alarm than is often suggested. Most of the studies be examined seem to show that the technology helps children stay in touch with their friends and make new ones.
The relationship between the use of digital technology and children’s mental health, broadly speaking, appears to be u-shaped. Researchers have found that moderate use is beneficial, whereas either no use at all or extreme use could be harmful.
What worries some experts more is that screens are becoming part of the middle-class armoury (武器库) for perpetuating (巩固) social advantage. Children from well-off homes are enrolled in private classes to learn skills like “How to be a YouTuber”, which poorer parents cannot afford.
28. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The disadvantages of overusing digital media.
B. The bad effects of using digital media.
C. Several bad impacts of using digital media.
D. The advantages of overusing digital media.
29. What is Daniel Kardefelt-Winther’s attitude to the use of digital media?
A. Objective. B. Favorable.
C. Indifferent. D. Uncertain.
30. What can you infer from the last paragraph?
A. Not all children from rich homes can attend private classes.
B. Not all children from poor homes can learn skills like“How to be a YouTuber”.
C. Digital media is the only way of strengthening the middle-class.
D. Digital media can widen class gap.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Should children interact with digital media?
B. Should parents allow their children interact with digital media?
C. What children do to interact with digital devices.
D. How children interact with digital devices.
D
(2020·华中师大附中高二检测)
We talk continuously about how to make children more “resilient (有韧性的)”, but whatever we’re doing, it’s not working. Rates of anxiety disorders and depression are rising rapidly among teenagers. What are we doing wrong?
Nassim Taleb invented the word “antifragile” and used it to describe a small but very important class of systems that gain from shocks, challenges, and disorder. The immune (免疫的) system is one of them: it requires exposure to certain kinds of bacteria and potential allergens (过敏原) in childhood in order to develop to its full ability.
Children’s social and emotional abilities are as antifragile as their immune systems. If we overprotect kids and keep them “safe” from unpleasant social situations and negative emotions, we deprive (剥夺) them of the challenges and opportunities for skill-building they need to grow strong. Such children are likely to suffer more when exposed later to other unpleasant but ordinary life events, such as teasing and social rejection.
It’s not the kids’ fault. In the UK, as in the US, parents became much more fearful in the 1980s and 1990s as cable TV and later the Internet exposed everyone, more and more, to those rare occurrences of crimes and accidents that now occur less and less. Outdoor play and independent mobility went down; screen time and adult-monitored activities went up.
Yet free play in which kids work out their own rules of engagement, take small risks, and learn to master small dangers turns out to be vital for the development of adult social and even physical competence. Depriving them of free play prevents their social-emotional growth. Norwegian play researchers Ellen Sandseter warned, “We may observe an increased anxiety or mental disorders in society if children are forbidden from participating in age adequate risky play. ”
They wrote those words in 2011. Over the following few years, their prediction came true. Kids born after 1994 are suffering from much higher rates of anxiety disorders and depression than did the previous generation.
What can we do to change these trends? We can’t guarantee that giving primary school children more independence today will bring down the rate of teenage suicide tomorrow. The links between childhood overprotection and teenage mental illness are suggestive but not clear-cut. Yet there are good reasons to suspect that by depriving our naturally antifragile kids of the wide range of experience they need to become strong, we are systematically preventing their growth. We should let go—and let them grow.
32. Why does the author mention the immune system in Paragraph 2?
A. To stress its importance.
B. To analyze the cause of anxiety.
C. To question the latest discovery.
D. To help understand a new word.
33. Parents overprotect children because _______.
A. they are concerned about their children’s safety
B. they want to keep children from being teased
C. parent-monitored activities are a must
D. children are not independent enough
34. According to the author, free play can _______.
A. promote children’s resilience
B. strengthen children’s friendship
C. reduce children’s risky behavior
D. develop children’s leadership skills
35. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A. Stop trying to perfect your child.
B. It takes great courage to raise children.
C. Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child.
D. The more exposed the children are to the risks, the more resilient they would become.

When writing the story of your life, don’t let someone else hold the pen. 36 Here are some ideas for writing a life story:
Live happily in your own way. You are not in this world to live up to the expectations of others, nor should you feel that others are here to live up to yours. What success means to each of us is totally different. Success to others may mean being a good parent. Success is only about spending your life happily in your own way.
37 There are thousands of possible paths up the mountain of life, so it really doesn’t matter which path you start off on. The only mistake is by wasting time running around at the base of the mountain, telling everyone that your life path is wrong.
Embrace (乐意采纳) new ideas, lessons, and challenges. Sometimes growing up means growing apart from old habits, relationships, and situations, and finding something new that truly moves you. 38 You should look very clearly into the unknown and enjoy it. Because when you come in contact with things that you don’t know, that’s when you’re learning, growing, and truly living.
Live honorably through kindness. If you live honorably, no matter how old you get, you’ll never lose your beauty. 39
Spend quality time with people you love. 40 People don’t live forever. Appreciate what you have, who loves you and who cares for you. You’ll never know how much they mean until the day when they are no longer beside you. Someday you will either regret not doing so, or you will say, “I’m glad I did. ”
A. Lost time is never found again.
B. Appreciate the little things in life that mean a lot.
C. Change your path when you must, but keep moving forward.
D. There is nothing more wonderful than seeing life as an adventure.
E. For others, it may mean to simply be happy or it can be all of the above.
F. And remember, there is no better thing than reaching out and holding the hand of someone in need.
G. Make wise choices every day because the way you live each day is a sentence in the story of your life.

Disappointed and upset, Tom found his money box empty. The coins lying on the bed added up to $36. 22. But the bike he wanted cost $88. Where and how could he get the rest of money? He knew his fellows all had bikes, without which he couldn’t hang around with them on weekends. He thought about asking his parents for money, but soon gave up because he knew it wouldn’t happen.
Earning money seemed to be the only way. So he had to find a job first. He decided to turn to Mr Jackie for advice, who usually had opinions on most things. “Well, you can start right here, the floor needs cleaning and my car needs washing. ” Then Tom’s part-time jobs began. For two months he worked every day after finishing his homework. He was surprised by a variety of jobs people found for him to do. He could hardly remember how many cars he had washed and how many windows he had cleaned, but he knew his dream would soon come true because the money kept increasing. The day finally came when he counted all the money he earned and found nearly 100 dollars. He couldn’t wait to go down to the shop to buy his dream bike.
It was by hard work that he bought the bike he had been dreaming of. So he cherished it very much. He had achieved what he thought was impossible, and that was more valuable than the bike.
