Reading fr infrmatin
1. Read the paragraph abut Bethany and find ut: Why can’t Bethany wait t be 18?
Why can’t Bethany wait t be 18?I can’t wait t be 18. One reasn is that althugh I’ve been wrking ever since leaving schl, I wn’t be vting in the next general electin. Why? Because I still wn’t be ld enugh. Surely, if yu’re ld enugh t earn a wage and pay taxes, yu shuld be allwed t have a say n hw the gvernment spends them!
I’ve als been taking driving lessns, and in fact I will be taking my driving test n the very day I turn 18. My mum wrries abut me being behind the wheel. As an ambulance driver, she’s seen a lt f car accidents invlving teenagers and thinks the legal age fr getting a driving licence shuld be 21. But I think I’m already mature enugh t understand that driving a car als means taking respnsibility fr my life and the lives f ther peple.
2. Read the paragraph abut Lin Ning and answer the fllwing questins: 1) What did Lin Ning expect when he turned 18? 2) What is the reality like t him? 3) What change has he experienced after turning 18?
1) What did Lin Ning expect when he turned 18?I celebrated my 18th birthday just befre I went t university. I expected t feel instantly different, as if I had clsed the dr n my childhd and stepped int a whle new wrld.
2) What is the reality like t him?But it wasn’t like that. When I wke up the next day, there were still rules t bey and lessns t attend.
3) What change has he experienced after turning 18?In fact, the change has been mre subtle and gradual than I imagined. Instead f being the selfish teenager I used t be, I have begun t feel mre aware f ther peple and develp a strnger sense f scial respnsibility.
T give an example, I will be signing an rgan dnatin agreement this time tmrrw. This was a big decisin fr me and I made it withut asking my parents (althugh I knew they wuld apprve).
Turning 18 als changed the way that sciety viewed me. I was really surprised when a bank cntacted me with a credit card ffer. Of curse, I wuld like t have mre freedm with mney and n dubt I will be getting a credit card at sme pint, but I currently dn’t have a steady incme, s getting a credit card might tempt me t spend mre mney than I have!
3. Read the paragraph abut Mrgan and answer: 1) Hw is the reality different frm Mrgan’s expectatins fr turning 18? 2) What is his understanding n turning 18?
1) Hw is the reality different frm Mrgan’s expectatins f turning 18?
I assumed I’d already have a well-paid jb and that I’d be mving int a rented apartment as sn as I turned 18, but hw wrng I was! My librarian’s salary means that I’ll be living at hme with my parents fr a while lnger. Because I cntribute t the husehld bills and my cmmute t wrk is quite expensive, I find it hard t save any mney.
2) What is his understanding n turning 18?I’ll be starting a new jb next mnth, hwever, s maybe things will get easier. I knw I culd get a lan t pay the depsit n my very wn apartment, but I dn’t feel ready t make that kind f cmmitment, and I d like my mm’s cking. I guess sme respnsibilities are mre abut attitude than age.
Organising infrmatin
Organise infrmatin frm the passage and cmplete the table.
I think it’s strange that I can nw take 1 yet I still can’t vte — I dn’t think it’s fair, given that 2 . I shuld have a say n 3 .I’m mature enugh t 4 .

At 18, I can d things like getting a credit card. Mre imprtantly, I can act n my desire t help thers, fr example by 5 . But althugh a lt f drs have pened fr me, there are still 6 .

I thught that nce I was 18 and in a full-time jb I’d be able t 7 , but my salary is nt high enugh. I als find it hard t save mney because f 8 and high cmmuting csts.
Discuss the questins in the lead part f the passage. What des the age f majrity really mean? Will yu be cmpletely in charge f yur wn life and able t express yurself in new and exciting ways? What new respnsibilities will this freedm bring?
Sharing yur understanding
What des the age f majrity really mean?
“The age f majrity” is the age at which a child legally becmesan adult and is respnsible fr the majrity f his r her actins.
Will yu be cmpletely in charge f yur wn life and able t express yurself in new and exciting ways?
N, we can’t be cmpletely in charge f ur wn lives because there will still be rules t bey after turning 18. But with the change brught by adulthd, we may be able t express urselves in new and exciting ways.
What new respnsibilities will this freedm bring?
Respnsibility and freedm g tgether. Being adult means taking respnsibility fr ur wn lives and the lives f ther peple. Besides, we need t learn t make gd decisins n ur wn. What’s mre, we shuld remember that sme respnsibilities are mre abut attitude than age.

This passage tells us that the age f majrity means the mment when yu turn 18, which is a milestne marking the start f adulthd. In the passage 3 yung peple tell us what 18 means r meant t them.
Bethany is a 16-year-ld girl frm Victria, Australia. She can’t wait t be 18 because n ne hand she wants the right t vte. She feels unfair since she is ld enugh t earn a wage and pay taxes but nt allwed t have a say n hw the gvernment spends them. On the ther hand, she desires t get her driving licence. She believes that she’s already mature enugh t take respnsibility fr her life and the lives f ther peple.
Lin Ning, 19, frm Shanghai, China, expected t feel instantly different after his 18th birthday. Hwever, there were still rules t bey and lessns t attend. The change he is experiencing has been mre subtle and gradual. Instead f being the selfish teenager he used t be, he has begun t feel mre aware f ther peple and develp a strnger sense f scial respnsibility. Besides, he als fund that the sciety viewed him differently.
Mrgan, frm Flrida, the US, is already 20 years ld. He expected he wuld have a well-paid jb and be mving int a rented apartment as sn as he turned 18. But the reality is that he’ll be living at hme with his parents fr a while lnger. And it’s hard fr him t save any mney because f the husehld bills and high cmmuting csts. Think & Share
1) D yu think the minimum age limits in the passage are sensible?2) What right are yu mst lking frward t having as an adult? Why?3) What d yu think it means t be a respnsible adult?4) Hw can yu use the language yu have learnt in the passage t express yur ideas clearly?
I think the minimum age limits in the passage are sensible. Take getting driving licence as an example. The 18-year-lds are usually mre mature bth physically and emtinally than the 16-year-lds. Thus, they will have a better understanding abut respnsibility than the yunger nes.
1) D yu think the minimum age limits in the passage are sensible?
I’m mst lking frward t making big decisins withut asking my parents. I knw it will be difficult but I really want t experience the feeling f independence. And I have the cnfidence that I can vercme all the difficulties.
2) What right are yu mst lking frward t having as an adult? Why?
I think being a respnsible adult means standing up fr yurself and what yu want. Yu shuld be brave enugh t adapt yurself t the change and take respnsibility psitively. Besides, yu have t learn t say “n” when facing temptatin.
3) What d yu think it means t be a respnsible adult?
Frm the passage I learned that when expressing ideas r pinins, I can use facts t supprt and strengthen them. By giving facts, I can make my pinin strnger and mre cnvincing.
4) Hw can yu use the language yu have learnt in the passage t express yur ideas clearly?
We read a passage abut 3 yung peple telling us what turning 18 means r meant t them. We learned that at the age f majrity, the reality des nt always match ur expectatins. Being 18 desn’t simply mean we can vte r get ur driving licence. In fact, it means we have t learn t make gd decisins n ur wn, adapt urselves t the reality and refuse temptatin smetimes. All in all, we have t be brave enugh t take ur respnsibility.
