Being cnsidered a leader in ur sciety is indeed f high praise. Leadership means pwer, cmmands, respect and, mst imprtant, encurages achievement. Unlike vitamin C, leadership skills can't be easily swallwed dwn. They must be carefully cultivated.
Different frm ppular belief, nst gd leaders are made, nt brn. They learn their skills in their everyday lives. But which d they develp? Hw d they (and hw can yu) get thers t fllw?
Always give credit. Many leaders nte that the mst efficient way t get a gd perfrmance frm thers is t treat then like heres. Giving public credit t smene wh has earned it is the best leadership technique in the wrld. It is als an act f genersity(慷慨)that’s never frgtten.
Giving credit is mre effective than even the mst cnstructive criticism(批评), which ften hurts rather than helps. Kenneth Blanchard, the authr f The One-Minute Manager, agrees, “Catch peple ding smething right!” he says. Then tell everyne abut it.
Take in frmed risks. “The best leaders knw that taking a risk is nt a thught less exercise,” says management adviser Marilyn Machlwitz. “Sky divers dn’t g up in an airplane withut checking the parachutes befrehand.”
Because the idea f risk als carries with it the pssibility f failure, many f us usually wait fr thers t take charge. but if yu want t be a leader, yu must learn t fail-and nt die a thusand deaths. Pick yurself up and start all ver again.
Encurage enthusiasm. “When peple understand the imprtance f wrk, they lend their mental strengths,” says Lee Ducat. But when they get excited abut the wrk, all their energy gets pured int the jb. That’s a great frce! Is this the best way t create excitement? Be enthusiastic yurself-Yu will be fllwed by everyne.
    24. The underlined wrd “cultivated” (paragraph 1) rughly means ________.
    A. cmparedB. develped
    C. examinedD. encuraged
    25. The part “Always give credit” tells us that a leader shuld ________.
    A. praise everyne B. give helpful criticism
    C. regard thers as real heres D. praise peple fr their gd perfrmances
    26. T be a gd leader, yu shuld _________.
    A. nt be afraid f any risks B. think twice befre taking risks
    C. try t avid any pssible failures D. knw what a thughtless exercise is
    27. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the passage?
    A. Hw t Be a Leader B. Nt Many Can Be Leaders
    C. Leadership Is Very Imprtant
    D. Leadership Is f Ski1ls and Techniques
    C
Did yu hear what happened at yesterday’s meeting? Can yu believe it? If yu find thse srts f quietly whispered questins abut yur c-wrkers irresistible, yu’re hardly alne. But why are we drawn t gssip(流言蜚语)?
A new study suggests it’s because the rumrs are all abut us. “Gssip receivers tend t use psitive and negative grup infrmatin t imprve, prmte, and prtect the self,” writes a research team, led by Elena Martinescu f the University f Grningen in the Netherlands. In the jurnal Persnality and Scial Psychlgy Bulletin, the researchers described tw experiments testing the persnal value gssip receivers get.
The first featured 178 university undergraduates, wh had all previusly wrked n at least ne curse assignment with a grup f fur r mre students. Participants were asked t recall and write a shrt descriptin f an incident, in which a grup member shared with them either psitive r negative infrmatin abut anther grup member’s secret. They then reprted their level f agreement with a series f statements. Sme f these measured the self-imprvement value f the gssip(“The infrmatin received made me think I can learn a lt frm X”); thers measured its self-prmtin value(“The infrmatin I received made me feel that I am ding well cmpared t X”). Still thers measured whether the gssip raised persnal cncerns(“The infrmatin I received made me feel that I must prtect my image in the grup”).
In the secnd experiment, 122 undergraduates were assigned the rle f “sales agent” at a majr cmpany. They received gssip frm a clleague that a third persn either did very well r very badly at a perfrmance evaluatin, and were then asked abut the emtins that infrmatin caused. They als respnded t the abve-mentined set f statements presented t the participants in the first experiment.
In each experiment, participants fund bth negative and psitive gssip t be f persnal value with different reasns. “Psitive gssip has self-imprvement value,” they write. “Cmpetence-related psitive gssip abut thers cntains lessns abut hw t imprve ne’s wn cmpetence. On the ther hand, negative gssip has self-prmtin value, because it prvides individuals with scial cmparisn infrmatin that justifies self-prmting judgments which results in feelings f pride.”
In additin, the results “shwed that negative gssip brught abut self-prtectin cncerns,” the researchers write. “Negative gssip makes peple cncerned that their reputatins may be at risk, as they may persnally becme targets f negative gssip in the future, which generates fear.” Fear is hardly a pleasant sensatin(感觉), but it can be a mtivating ne. As researchers put it: “Gssip cnveniently prvides individuals with indirect scial-cmparisn infrmatin abut relevant thers.”
28 Why are we drawn t gssip accrding t the researchers?
    A. We need evaluative infrmatin abut thers t evaluate urselves.
    B. We are interested in the news that aruses ur persnal cncerns.
    C. We tend t gain a sense f pride frm judging thers.
    D. We are likely t learn lessns frm thers’ mistakes.

    A. I’ve dne better than Mary accrding t what Tm said abut her.
    B. I shuld behave myself in case f being gssiped abut like Mary.
    C. I have t learn frm Mary accrding t what Tm said abut her.
    D. I have n cmments n what Tm said abut Mary.
    30. What’s the critical difference f the secnd experiment cmpared with the first ne?
    A. The identities f the participants.
    B. The number f the participants studied.
    C. The time during which the experiment lasted.
    D. The rle-play technique used in the experiment.
    31. What rle des “negative gssip” play accrding t the researchers?

Glancing at the large rm thrugh her blue eyes, fur-year-ld Nicle in her versize shrt skirt began t cry. “It’s kay, hney,” I tried t encurage. “Cme play with the ther children.” But the mre I persuaded, the mre the water flwed.
Every week fr the past eighteen years, I’ve spent Tuesdays with a dzen kids dressed in satin ribbns, feathers, butterfly wings and plastic jewelry. These afternns are free flwing and nn-threatening but fr sme strange reasn, Nicle saw this as the final kiss f death.
In her mind, she was ging t be left all alne with a strange wman and several ther children. Uncntrllable tears rapidly started t flw and there wuldn’t be enugh tissues in the whle building t mp up the fld.
Tip teing quickly t the dr, I gently called t her father. “Just sit in here fr a while until she warms up,” I said. Standing next t his first brn, Rich tk his daughter's hand and led her t the centre f the rm. Slwly he pushed, but again the damn brke. “Daddy, dn’t leave me!” Nicle cried. “Dn't make me d this.” Bending dwn n his knees until they were nse-t-nse, Rich gently whispered in her ear, “I’ll d it with yu. “Ww!” I cheered. “Yu deserve a prize. I’ve never seen a dad d that befre.”
Fr a brief secnd Rich paused, and then with a smile, he replied, “Isn’t this part f the jb?”
That wnderful mment was tw years ag and I've thught f it ften, especially when I see hw well Nicle perfrms in class. Mre imprtantly, hwever, I’ve remembered it because it takes me back t my wn dance beginnings with my father.
Frm the mment I was brn, music spke t me. The mment the radi r recrd player was turned n, I flay my arms and legs abut the rm in wild fashin. Mst f the time, I was fine t perfrm alne, but the minute my dad walked int the rm, I’d jump int his arms, hug him tight and place my tiny feet n tp f his highly shined shes.
While this memry is sweet, the real reasn I hld it dear t my heart is because f what went behind his actin. My father was nt the mst gifted creature n tw legs when it came t dancing, but he’d stepped ut f his cmfrt zne(区域)and danced because he knew hw much I lved it. Fr him, helping his nly daughter develp, despite hw uncmfrtable it made him feel, was part f his jb.
As a child, my father did what he was tld and lived as expected. But when it came t his wn children, he allwed us the chance t fllw ur wn path and we were never frced t be like him, live like him r think like him. He prvided an envirnment where my three brthers and I were permitted t explre ur wn jungle until we fund the life that was right fr us.
T all yu fathers wh’ve influenced yur children's lives by stepping ut f yur cmfrt znes t dance, whether it is in mind, bdy r sul-this ne’s fr yu! Yu give a child the curage t stand n the center stage f life.
    32. Why was Nicle s sad at her first dancing class?
    A. She was asked t mp up the flr. B. She had t be left with the strangers.
    C. She didn't like the dancing dresses. D. She was threatened by the lder bys.
    33. What des the father mean by saying “Isn’t this part f the jb?” in Paragraph 6?
    A. Dancing with their daughter is a father’s part-time jb.
