Twice every month, Miranda Sam, a 66-year-old Ghanaian, visited the China Traditional Herbal Hospital, a private herbal facility at Pokuase, a suburb of the Ghanaian capital, for treatment.
“I was squeezing lemons, and when I finished, I could not get up or even move my legs, so I went to the hospital and did an X-ray examination, but they saw nothing. Meanwhile, I could not walk and was in a wheelchair,” the retired worker said. Hence Miranda decided to visit the herbal facility. “On two occasions, I had to do acupuncture(针灸), and I have found great relief. Now I walk unaided, so I keep coming for treatment,” she said.
As Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is gaining popularity in Ghana, many acupuncture clinics run by Chinese doctors pop up in the country. However, the China Traditional Herbal Hospital was established by 52-year-old Ghanaian business owner Bediako, after his fruitful encounter with the effects of TCM in 2012. With the help of a Chinese lady, Bediako set up a small clinic specializing in TCM. Years on, the facility has subsequently grown into a bigger herbal hospital. The hospital treats patients with a combination of local and Chinese herbal formulas. It supports this with the application of traditional Chinese medical methods.
Strokes(中风) account for 1.3 percent of all hospital admissions in Ghana, and 6.3 percent of all hospital deaths. But Bediako is confident that as more people with these conditions turn to the natural methods of healing, the pain and death rates would subside. “A gentleman was brought here three weeks ago, who could not sit, stand, or walk. He was first taken through acupuncture. I observed him on camera 30 minutes later, squatting(蹲), standing, and walking. You come here with your pain but will leave with a smile. That is our feature,” he said.
The hospital has started a second facility in Ashaiman near the capital, with plans to open other branches across the country to meet the growing demand.
4.What can we learn from Miranda’s words in Paragraph 2?
A.Her illness is not a bit severe. B.Squeezing lemons is a risky job.
C.She is feeling better now. D.She is unsure about what to do next.
5.What do we know about Bediako’s hospital?
A.It is located in the downtown area.
B.It was originally a specialized clinic.
C.It was established by a Chinese doctor.
D.It uses nothing but Chinese herbs.
6.What does the underlined word “subside” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A.Decline. B.Remain.
    C.Climb. D.Change.
7.What’s the writer’s probable attitude towards the TCM in Ghana?
    A.Negative. B.Optimistic.
    C.Uncertain. D.Concerned.

The paper, published in May by the Journal of Marketing Research, analyzed purchases made from a single large European retailer and found that free shipping did encourage customers to buy more. But it also increased purchases of items that historically have higher return rates, such as clothing or products from lesser-known brands. Thus, returns also increased as a result of the promotions, to the point where profits were erased.
In one part of the paper, during the typically four-week periods when free shipping was offered, online order volumes rose 11%. But when the cost of returns was compared with the sales proceeds(收入), the authors calculated that on balance the results for the promotion periods amounted to an average 0.7% loss.
In one analysis that ran for two months, the researchers found that the return rate for customers who bought low-risk products — like office supplies, or products from well-known brands — averaged about 22%.
In another analysis, the researchers attempted to better understand motivations of online shoppers by measuring their attitudes toward free shipping. They found two things were happening. First, consumers saw free shipping as compensation for taking a risk on a product. Second, feelings of gratitude for having shipping costs eliminated(消除) made them happy and thus more willing to make a risky purchase.
Prof. Neslin advises companies to look at whether their own free-shipping promotions are profitable before they launch such campaigns. Also, he advises companies to identify which products get returned more often than others and try to provide customers with more information about those products, so they can make more-informed choices.
8.What erased the profits according to the first paragraph?
A.The risky customers. B.The European retailer.
    C.The returned items. D.The lesser-known brands.
9.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Consumers risked purchasing a product when free shipping came along with it.
B.Free shipping encouraged customers to buy products from well-known brands.
C.Online order volumes rose only when free shipping was offered as compensation.
D.Purchases of office supplies also increased during the typically four-week periods.
10.What are companies advised to do according to Prof. Neslin?
    a. Design profitable free-shipping promotions.
    b. Make sure they have shipping costs removed.
    c. Provide more information about their products.
    d. Distinguish products with higher returned rates.
    A.abc B.abd C.acd D.bcd
11.What is the paper mainly about?
    A.Low-risk products. B.Return rates.
    C.Increased purchases. D.Free shipping.

Many teachers believe frequent quizzes(小测验) help students better grasp classroom material. Crede, an associate professor of psychology, was skeptical that something as simple as a quiz could positively affect students’ academic performance. He decided to dig deeper and conduct an analytic study of existing research to see if there was any proof to the idea. What he discovered truly surprised him.
Crede analyzed data from previously published studies that examined 52 classes with almost 8,000 students, primarily college-level courses, to determine if frequent quizzes improved the students’ academic performance. Laboratory settings were kept out of the study because Crede wanted to observe whether similar studies from labs would apply to general classrooms.
Crede discovered that when students are quizzed over class material at least once a week, they tend to perform better on midterm and final exams compared to students who did not take quizzes. He also found that students who took frequent quizzes were less likely to fail the class, especially if they were struggling with the course content. Students who struggle the most in a class seem to benefit the greatest from frequent quizzes. The other surprising thing was how much quizzes helped reduce failure rates in classes. The chances of passing a class went through the roof where instructors used this. In addition to quiz frequency, another factor that seemed to positively affect students’ performance was immediate feedback from instructors. Also, quizzes that required students to answer with written responses proved more beneficial to their understanding of class material compared to multiple-choice questions.
Asking teachers to grade written quizzes daily or weekly may discourage some from carrying them out in their classes. Instead, it is recommended that instructors give online quizzes that can be automatically graded by a course management system. Quiz attributes(属性) proved insignificant in the study, including whether the tests were pop quizzes or planned, or if they were online or on paper.
12.What did Crede do to ensure his study’s accuracy?
A.He focused on what happened in classrooms.
B.He researched as many students as he could.
C.He made laboratory settings as real as possible.
D.He gave easy quizzes to make every student do well.
13.What did Crede discover in his study?
A.Frequent quizzes could remove students’ failure in classes.
B.Instructors’ feedback was more important than frequent quizzes.
C.Frequent quizzes were especially useful to the struggling students.
D.Multiple-choice questions shouldn’t be included in frequent quizzes.
14.What may be a disadvantage of frequent quizzes for teachers?
    A.Accessing the Internet less frequently.
B.Having too many exam papers to mark.
C.Being unable to get appropriate test materials.
D.Finding it hard to choose the right type of quiz.
15.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Quizzes Stimulate a Passion for Creation B.Quizzes Improve Academic Performance
C.Quizzes Create a Heavy Burden D.Quizzes Increase Boredom

    二、七选五
Panic attacks are sudden, intense surges of fear, panic, or anxiety. 16. Panic attacks are generally brief, lasting less than 10 minutes, although some of the symptoms may persist for a longer time. Here are a few tips for you to cope with panic attacks.
    Deep breathing
If you’re able to control your breathing, you’re less likely to experience the hyperventilating(呼吸急促) that can make other symptoms — and the panic attack itself — worse. Focus on taking deep breaths in and out through your mouth, feeling the air slowly fill your chest and belly and then slowly leave them again. 17.
    Close your eyes
Some panic attacks come from triggers(触发物) that overwhelm you. If you are in a fast-paced environment with a lot of stimuli(刺激), this can feed your panic attack. 18. This can block out any extra stimuli and make it easier to focus on your breathing.
    19.
Mindfulness can help ground you in the reality of what is around you. Since panic attacks can cause a feeling of separation from reality, this can combat your panic attack as it is approaching or actually happening.
    Use muscle relaxation techniques
Much like deep breathing, muscle relaxation techniques can help stop your panic attack in its tracks by controlling your body’s response as much as possible. Consciously relax one muscle at a time. 20. Techniques of this kind will be most effective when you have practised them beforehand.
    A.Practice mindfulness
    B.Get away from reality
C.They have physical as well as emotional symptoms.
D.To reduce the stimuli, close your eyes during your panic attack.
E.You can start with the fingers, and then move your way up through your body.
F.These cannot only help you fall asleep, but they may also promote muscle relaxation.
G.Breathe in for a count of four, hold for a second, and then breathe out for a count of four.

    47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Many years ago, I had a friend named Jonathan who lived only a few houses down the street. He was a cool kid and a real friend and in retrospect(回想) I can see he had all the usual qualities and hang-ups of a typical boy. He was fun to be with because of his innocent enthusiasm, and he knew all the best places to hang out in the neighborhood.
The best part about Jonathan, though, was his dog. This is not to say that my friend was any less memorable than his pet, but that dog had a very special quality. A friendly Labrador that never met anyone he didn’t like, or immediately want to lick, Bowzer was born without any vocal chords (声带). He simply couldn’t bark though he behaved just like any other dog.
Even though he couldn’t make any sounds, Bowzer surely made his presence known anyway. We couldn’t play a pickup baseball game in the neighborhood park without an extra infielder, outfielder, base runner, or bellboy running around on four paws. It looked like his life depended on bumping into every single player on the field, regardless of which team that player played on. For all of us, it became an accepted part of our playtime that Bowzer would somehow be involved in whatever activity we decided on.
Then, one day, something terrible happened to Jonathan. His parents were called away to the hospital because his grandmother was ill, and so Jonathan was left at home by himself. Two men had chosen that house for an unannounced visit.
Jonathan was in his bedroom and heard the noise from the break-in, and because of panic, he didn’t scream for help. Bowzer was in the bedroom, and heard the noise as well, but because of his birth defect(缺陷), he couldn’t make a sound. As Jonathan read a book, the robbers made their way through the entire house and probably figured that no one was home.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One of the robbers opened the door to Jonathan’s bedroom, and was frightened to find a boy in the bed.

Luckily, Jonathan survived that horrific gunshot without any physical injuries, and he loved his dog more afterwards.

47.One of the robbers opened the door to Jonathan’s bedroom, and was frightened to find a boy in the bed. The robber was even more frightened to discover a fifty-pound Labrador flying at him. Bowzer couldn’t bark, but that didn’t mean he did not have teeth or that he did not intend to take as big a bite out of that robber as he could. With an angry dog chewing on his arm, the robber began shouting in pain. The second robber suddenly appeared, and that’s when Jonathan saw the gun. The last thing he remembers is hearing one gunshot.
Luckily, Jonathan survived that horrific gunshot without any physical injuries, and he loved his dog more afterwards. Bowzer protected his master in his own way. Just like on the baseball field, he responded swiftly and successfully bit the arm that held the gun. That gunshot, originally aiming at Jonathan, unfortunately went through one leg of Bowzer, causing him unable to run. Luckily, the police arrived just in time to arrest the robbers. Life came back to normal. Jonathan still hang out with his friends a lot, but he never leaves Bowzer at home alone. He takes him wherever he goes.
