Ever noticed how when a big group sings "Happy Birthday," the beginning is a terrible mess, with everyone singing a slightly different pitch(音调)? But then, near the end, it all sort of comes together?
That's because we tend to adjust our own singing pitch to accommodate others. And now scientists in the U. K. have found that even trained choral singers will follow their fellow choir members. But not necessarily in the right direction.
The researchers had eight pairs of musically trained amateur singers-all women for this study-sing, a capella(无伴奏合唱), the melody of either "Silent Night" or another classic choir tune, "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded."
Individual volunteers all sang in their own studios, in four different situations: each singer was completely isolated, hearing only themselves; or singer one got to hear singer two(left ear solo); or singer two got to hear singer one(right ear solo); or finally, both singers could hear each other (stereo harmony). Then the researchers used software to collect pitch information from the recordings.
What they found was that singers stayed more on tune with the pitch written in the musical score when singing solo, versus singing with a partner. And when one partner veered(突然转向) off pitch, the other singer followed her, perhaps to compensate for the error-meaning even though they weren't singing the pitch as written, the resulting duet(二重唱)was more harmonious. The findings are in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.
The results support a common practice in choirs: put weak singers next to strong ones, so they can follow their pitch. As for the rest of us amateurs, if you find yourself out at karaoke chorusing with an off-pitch friend, take this advice from study author Jiajie Dai of Queen Mary University of London:
You have to listen to yourself more than you listen to others. Trust yourself, never depend on others. This guideline appears to be the key…to staying on key.
24. What did scientists in the U. K. find in the research?
A. It is impossible for a big group to sing the same pitch.
B. Trained singers occasionally make mistakes when singing.
C. Singers often follow their partners to sing harmoniously.
D. Singers tend to correct the tune sung by their partners.
25. What does the underlined word "isolated" probably mean?
A. Separate. B. Unmusical. C. Ignoring others. D. In the loudest voice.
26. According to Jiajie Dai, what should we do when singing?
A. Focus on our own voice. B. Rely on our partners to sing in tune.
C. Never chorus with an off-pitch person. D. Sing with strong singers to compensate for errors.

In 1938, Soichiro Honda started a little workshop, developing the concept of the piston ring(活塞环).
His plan was to sell the idea to Toyota. He labored night and day. Finally, came the day he completed his piston ring and was able to take a working sample to Toyota, only to be told that the rings did not meet their standards!
Rather than focus on his failure, he continued working towards his goal. Then, after two more years of struggle and redesign, he won a contract with Toyota.
By now, the Japanese government was gearing up for war! With the contract in hand, Soichiro Honda needed to build a factory to supply Toyota, but building materials were in short supply. He invented a new concrete-making process that enabled him to build the factory.
With the factory now built, he was ready for production, but the factory was bombed twice and steel became unavailable, too. He started collecting gasoline cans discarded by US fighters-"Gifts from President Truman, " he called them, which became the new raw materials for his rebuilt manufacturing process.
After the war, an extreme gasoline shortage forced people to walk or use bicycles. Honda built a tiny engine and attached it to his bicycle. His neighbors wanted one, and although he tried, materials could not be found and he was unable to supply the demand.
Soichiro Honda wrote to 18, 000 bicycle shop owners and, in an inspiring letter, asked them to help him revitalize(复兴)Japan. 5, 000 responded and advanced him what little money they could to build his tiny bicycle engines. The small engine "The Super Cub" became a reality and was a success. With success in Japan, Honda began exporting his bicycle engines to Europe and America.
In the 1970s there was another gas shortage, this time in America and automotive fashion turned to small cars. Honda was quick to pick up on the trend. Experts now in small engine design, the company started making tiny cars, and rode another wave of success.
Today, Honda Corporation employs over 100, 000 people in the USA and Japan, and is one of the world's largest automobile companies. Honda succeeded because one man made a truly committed decision, acted upon it, and made adjustments on a continuous basis. Failure was simply not considered a possibility.
28. Which is the major obstacle that Soichiro Honda often met with on his way to success?
A. A lack of financial assistance. B. A shortage of raw materials.
C. Toyota's breaking contracts. D. High standards of customer care.
29. What is the "Gifts from President Truman" according to Soichiro Honda?
A. US fighters. B. Steel products. C. Gasoline cans. D. American companies.
30. Which of the following words best describe Soichiro Honda?
A. Stubborn and down-to-earth. B. Optimistic and organized.
C. Ambitious and broad-minded. D. Determined and persistent.
31. What can we learn from Soichiro Honda's story?
A. Success is 99% failure. B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. Rome was not built in a day. D. Opportunity knocks only once.
D
Working at a desk all day may not be as bad for your health as sitting in front of a television after work. That is a finding of a new study done in the United States.
Jeanette Garcia, a researcher at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, led the study.
"We've been hearing more and more about how sitting is the new smoking. Previous evidence suggests a relationship between health problems and time spent sitting. As long as you reduce any type of sitting, then that's helpful in improving health," she said.
"This study, however, suggests that this may not be the case, and that we should focus more on leisure time sitting, mainly television viewing time, rather than sitting, in general," she added.
The study followed close to 3, 600 African-American adults. Almost one-third of them watched TV for more than four hours a day. A little more than one-third of the subjects spent between two and four hours a day sitting in front of the TV. The remaining third watched TV for less than two hours a day.
Researchers followed the group for an average of 8. 4 years. During the study, 205 of the subjects died and 129 others suffered a heart attack or stroke. Compared to people who watched less than two hours of television daily, those who spent more than four hours in front of the TV were 49 percent more likely to die or have a heart attack or stroke.
The study had some limitations, however. Lin Yang is a researcher at the University of Calgary in Canada. She says it is possible that sitting in front of the TV might be worse than sitting at a desk because people snack while they are watching TV. Some people simply stay up too late and do not get enough sleep. Eating treats or lack of sleep could both cause weight gain and increase risk factors for heart disease. These factors could make people more likely to die early, she added.
Arch Mainous, a researcher at the University of Florida in Gainesville, said in an email that it would be a mistake for people with desk jobs to think there is no need to get moving during the work day. Take the stairs rather than the elevator, or take a walk at lunch, Mainous advised. "Leisure time physical activity is definitely beneficial, but walking on some more steps in the workday should also be encouraged."
32. What can we learn about Jeanette Garcia's study?
A. Not all forms of sitting are equally bad for health.
B. Reducing time spent sitting is an effective way to improve health.
C. 49%of those who spent more than four hours watching TV daily were unhealthy.
D. It's the first study ever indicating the relationship between health problems and sitting.
33. Which of the following may Lin Yang agree with?
A. Sitting in front of the TV is not that harmful.
B. People may as well avoid doing jobs at a desk.
C. Health risks have nothing to do with TV viewing.
D. Snacks and lack of sleep may be to blame for early death.
34. As Arch Mainous suggested, what should an office worker do?
A. Take the elevator to save time. B. Participate in more activities.
C. Get moving during the workday. D. Take a walk to lose weight.
35. What is this text most likely from?
A. A poster. B. A textbook. C. A guidebook. D. A magazine.
