The English are often considered as unfriendly people who don't talk to strangers, but not London taxi drivers. I once asked a cabbie to describe his life to me and he didn't stop talking until I arrived home half an hour later. He told me many interesting stories and this is one of them: “Some very strange things happen late at night. The other day I was taking a woman home from a party. She had a little dog with her. When we got to her house she found that she'd lost her key. So, I waited in the cab with the dog while she climbed up the window.” “I waited … and waited … After half an hour of ringing the bell I decided to find out what was going on. I tied the dog to a tree and started to climb up the window. The next thing I knew was that the police came. They thought that I was trying to rob the house! Luckily, the woman came downstairs, she'd gone to sleep and forgotten about me and the dog. I was in such a hurry to get away that I forgot to ask her for the fare(车资,车费).”

This year 2,300 teenagers (young people aged from 13-19 ) from all over the world will spend about ten months in U.S. homes. They will attend U.S. schools, meet U.S. teenagers, and form impressions of the real American teenagers. American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and have a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George's family. In return, George's son, Mike, spent a year in Fred's home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months’ study, the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected — much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The family's word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual (个人). Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it.”
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize (批评) American schools.” he says. “It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens (市民). There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”
4. The whole exchange program is mainly to _______________.
A. help teenagers in other countries know the real America
B. send students in America to travel in Germany
C. let students learn something about other countries
D. have teenagers learn new languages
5. What did Fred and Mike agree on?
A. American food tasted better than German food.
B. German schools were harder than American schools.
C. Americans and Germans were both friendly.
D. There were more cars on the streets in America.
6. What is special in American schools?
A. There is some middle ground between the two teaching buildings.
B. There are a lot of after-school activities.
C. Students usually take 14 subjects in all.
D. Students go outside to enjoy themselves in a car.
7. What did Mike think after experiencing the American school life?
A. A better education should include something good from both America and Germany.
B. German schools trained students to be better citizens.
C. American schools were not as good as German schools.
D. The easy life in the American school was more helpful to students.
C
In an age in which everyone wants to be fit and beautiful, it might come as a surprise that new research shows that exercise is in fact what is stopping us losing weight.
The survey conducted by the Weight-loss and Health Institute (WHI) asked over 1,000 Australians whether their exercise and weight-loss methods were effective. More than half of them admitted that while they exercised, they couldn’t reach their weight-loss goals. The biggest reason the WHI found that was leading to the failure in weight loss was the direct link between strenuous (剧烈的) exercise and the need to “reward” or “treat” yourself after your workout.
Results also show that those who exercise only to lose weight will pay no attention to their diet, with 53 percent admitting they actually eat more after exercising and 41 percent rewarding themselves with sugary treats after. Geoff Jowett, an Australian weight-loss coach, says this is one of the most common reasons why exercise is leading to weight gain. “What happens is they do exercise and then eat a piece of cake, which means they can become fit and fat at the same time,” he added.
A study recently conducted by Arizona State University also found similar results when they studied the effects of strenuous exercise on overweight women. The researchers asked 81 women who always sat for a long time in their work to attend a 12-week exercise program. They were also asked not to change their diet. The end result found that while they were fitter after twelve weeks, they also were fatter. There was no noticeable weight loss among the group and almost 70 percent of the women had piled on some fat during the program.
Jowett says the important thing we should notice is that fitness and weight loss are two ball games. He believes it’s a 80/20 ratio with 80 percent being about what we eat and 20 percent exercise.
So what can be regarded as strenuous exercise? “A walk is good because you can still talk, but if you’re doing exercise like running, cycling and swimming, it won’t be good for weight loss,” Jowett added.
Jowett also notes that the exercise on the TV show The Biggest Loser is not suitable for people who are obviously overweight because it may cause injury, and workouts like running are too strenuous for the body and lead to hunger which results in sugar need and weight gain.
The solution Jowett believes is to separate fitness and weight loss. Deal with the weight problem first by eating healthily and then take 10,000 steps a day.
As for whether exercise is necessary at all, Jowett says if it’s to drop kilos, forget about it.
8. The underlined phrase “piled on” in Para.4. means “_______”.
A. used B. given C. lost D. gained
9.What can we infer from the passage?
A. The exercise on The Biggest Loser is strenuous.
B. All people tend to eat sugary snacks after working out.
C. Taking strenuous exercise is harmful to your health.
D. Exercise plays a more important role in weight loss than diet.
10. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Lose weight to keep fit. B. How to achieve weight loss.
C. Exercise may cause weight gain. D. How to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

A man in Germany may not have been in danger when he called the police on a baby squirrel running after him, but it all worked out for the best for the funny suspect.
Emergency services in the city of Karlsruhe got a call on Thursday from a man afraid that the tiny animal wouldn't stop following him around. The Guardian reported. Police arrived at the scene, where the squirrel finally stopped running after him by lying down and going to sleep.
It turned out that the squirrel actually needed help, the police said. ""It often happens that squirrels which have lost their mothers look for a replacement(代营)and then focus(集中)their efforts on one person, "the police spokeswoman Christina Krenz told The Guardian.
The squirrel, now named Karl-Friedrich, is in the care of an animal center. Karlsruhe police posted a statement on Facebook about the animal, including several lovely photos.
The baby squirrel chase is the second squirrel event to make international headlines this summer. Last month, a London woman called police after she heard loud noises in her home and suspected a burglar. The intruder turned out to be a squirrel, according to the police who came for help.
Although the government in the German case said the squirrel did need help, wildlife experts warn that before intervening (介入)in the case where you suspect a squirrel is orphaned(孤儿的),you should do your best to make sure the animal truly requires help. The Wildlife Centre of Virginia, which gets hundreds of calls every year about supposedly orphaned squirrels, published this handy guide to help decide whether such an animal really needs help and what to do if so. When in doubt, contact a local wildlife rescuer or animal center.
11. Karl-Friedrich in the passage turns out to be _______________.
A. a policewoman B. a little squirrel
C. a guide in Virginia D. a woman from London
12. What does the underlined part "The intruder" in Paragraph5 mean?
A. A wildlife expert. B. A brave policeman.
C. A woman suspect. D. An unpopular visitor.
13. Why did the baby squirrel run after the man?
A. The man gave food to it.
B. It wanted to bite the man.
C. The man would take it to the animal center.
D. It needed the replacement for the loss of its mother.
14. What can we get from the wildlife experts' words?
A. People should find out if the squirrels truly need help.
B. The police should punish the people who hunt the squirrels.
C. The government should made laws to protect the squirrels.
D. The animal center needs enough money to carry on with their work.

Hairstyle is thought to be a personal style choice.
However, some Chinese students are required by their school to have unified (统—) haircuts, with short hair for male students and shoulder-length hair for female students. Some students don't like such hairstyles and have broken the rules in school.
A complaint letter by a middle school student in Fuzhou, Fujian province as well as the response of the local education bureau (教育局) to the letter has caught public attention. The letter has sparked (引发) public discussion on whether schools should control how students wear their hair.
In the letter, which was published recently on Fuzhou's 12345 website, the student wrote, “I think the so-called 'good purposes' of the school are wrong and I highly question whether this kind requirement really helps students to develop good habits and show good appearances," the student said.
The school told students that it is easy for teenage male students to pay more attention to beautiful female students, so the school wants girls to have simple appearances and develop their talents, the letter said.
"I think these words are a complete lie. How can you expect someone to have a colourful future if he or she does not know how to look attractive? Why does the school need to make all the teenage boys pay no attention to girls? Doesn't the school need more sexual (性别的) education?
"Teenagers should be colourful and different. Isn't it boring when people look back on their teenage years and can only remember ugly haircuts and same uniforms? Why can't the school give students a choice to be themselves? "
The Fuzhou education bureau wrote back to the student and said it proves that the writer is a good student with his own thoughts, courage and truth-seeking spirit. The schools ask students to have unified haircuts and wear uniforms because it is easy for teenagers to pay much attention to their appearances and little attention to their studies, the bureau said. Collectivism (集体主义) is very important for the country's development. Although the city has required students to have unified haircuts, schools can set different hairstyle standards that allow students to show their personal styles.

六、阅读填空 opposite helpless/wrong neither/nor praised changed/improved
八、书面表达
I have read the information about the two e-watches. And I think the Sonic Watch is a better choice. First, it is made in China. China is quite good at making electronic devices. The quality of it will surely be good. Second, its battery can last longer, up to 12 hours compared with the Swan Watch whose battery can only last 9 hours. Third, it has Wi-Fi, so you can access to the Internet more easily and it can help you take clearer photos. Besides I know it can keep the record of people’s health and I’m sure you can manage your health better with the watch. But the price of it is a little bit higher. It often costs 350 pounds.
You also asked me about whether you should have one right now or not. In fact, I think it is OK to have one because it’s easy for you to get touch with your parents after class and also it can help you know the time as well as your health. I’m really looking forward to hearing from you.
